Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741) was an Italian Baroque musical composer, virtuoso violinist, teacher, and priest. Born in Venice, the capital of the Venetian Republic, he is regarded as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe. He composed many instrumental concertos, for the violin and a variety of other instruments, as well as sacred choral works and more than forty operas. His best-known work is a series of violin concertos known as the Four Seasons.

The Violin Sonata in C Major (RV 3) also know as the "Manchester Sonata" No. 1, is from a set of manuscripts formerly owned by Charles Jennens (1700-1773), for whom they were bought in Italy by Edward Holdsworth in 1742. The manuscript collection originally belonged to Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni (1667-1740) and is thought to have been made in 1726 or 1727. It is part of the Newman Flower Collection which is now held by the Henry Watson Music Library , part of the city library in Manchester U.K. Before the manuscript's discovery at the time of the collection's acquisition by the library in 1965, the Sonatas numbered 5, 10, 11 and 12 (RV 759, 760, 756 and 754) were unknown.823SE (Language and Literature Library).
