The title of Esa Pietilä?s solo harpsichord work Fata morgana (2019) refers to a special weather con-dition, which creates illusory effect of mirage-like fairy castle-like monuments in the horizon of the sea. The piece brings forth the frightening bass sonority on double manual, full size harpsichord and the brightness on the treble and makes a dialogue out of them. ?I got fasci-nated by the sonority, character and power of the low register sound on the instrument, es-pecially when used in non-traditional way and found some kind of especially delightful and outlandish cluster-mud and airy glimmering things which seem to play together?, the com-poser describes. L?A.B.C pour le clavecin ou forte piano de Johann Gottlieb Nicolaï a été publié en 1780 à Zwolle aux Pays-Bas. À la fois organiste et claveciniste, l?auteur s?adresse, dans cet ouvrage, à tous ceux qui désirent apprendre à jouer d?un instrument à clavier, y compris le clavicorde dont les ornements spécifiques sont indiqués dans une table d?agréments. L?idée de proposer aujourd?hui une édition de l?A.B.C. est partie du constat de l?importance de savoir lire sur un fac-similé dans l?apprentissage de la musique ancienne. Cette publication propose donc de mettre le fac-similé au c?ur de la pratique, dès les débuts à l?instrument, tout en faisant mieux connaître le matériel proposé aux élèves de l?époque et en enrichissant le répertoire pédagogique.
Les pièces composées par Johann Gottlieb Nicolaï sont fortement liées à la danse, les mélodies sont charmantes et facilement mémorisables pour apprendre avec plaisir. Pour les élèves passionnés de répertoire, l?auteur ajoute des « suppléments » qui permettent, après chacune des trente-deux leçons, de jouer un certain nombre d?autres pièces de niveau similaire. À la fin de sa méthode, Nicolaï laisse des portées vides offrant un espace de liberté où chaque élève peut s?essayer à la composition ou simplement recopier soigneusement des musiques qu?il apprécie. L?A.B.C. est donc une « méthode à tiroirs » qui permet une approche variée et agréable, mais également une progression rigoureuse et réfléchie. Les pièces sont courtes et abordent d?emblée le lien avec un tempo et un affect, de façon très efficace et vivante. Bien que l?ambitus des toutes premières pièces soit restreint, toutes les zones du clavier sont peu à peu exploitées et au fur et à mesure de la progression pédagogique, l?élève acquiert rapidement la sensation de carrure et la connaissance des différentes danses qui développeront aisance et créativité dans son interprétation.

The 10th volume of Domenico Scarlatti?s Sonate per clavicembalo represents a crucial landmark of this series, i.e. the thirty Essercizi per gravicembalo (London, 1738-39) at the heart of the composer?s production. For a long time, the style of these sonatas and their role in the history of keyboard music has been debated. But nobody had ever examined thoroughly the key aspects of textual criticism, intended not only as a detailed reconstruction of the text, but as a philological study with a full scope. This volume is the first step in such direction. The musical text of this edition is the result of a systematic comparison of all the eighteenth century printed and manuscript sources preserving Scarlatti?s treasured Essercizi. In some cases, the edition presents an alternative version of the same sonata, based on the sources? examination and sometimes showing an intricate web of authorial variants. The detailed Critical Notes take into account all the variants handed down by the sources. Many topics are discussed in the rich Introduction, first and foremost the historical context and the genesis of Scarlatti?s sonatas. Furthermore, other important topics are investigated, such as: the relationship between the Essercizi and the rival Londonese edition by Roseingrave: the role and chronology of the contemporary French editions, known under the name of Boivin: the early interventions of anonymous performers.
