Composed in honor of the 75th Anniversary of the Summer Music Camp for Can't-Get-Enough-Chamber-Music Aficionados, aka the Chamber Music Conference and Composers' Forum of the East, Camera Oscura explores musical kernels imbedded in the names of some of Donald Crockett's favorite composers in the rich history of chamber music, though the musical evocations are based on the names, not their styles. In addition to the noisy fanfares introduced by the traditional nonet (woodwind quintet, plus a quartet of strings: violin, viola, cello and bass), there are smaller combinations based on iconic pieces in the repertory, for example, oboe quartet, clarinet quintet, Schubert octet, woodwind quintet, string trio, etc.Movements: I. Par PERGOLESI GIOVANNI BATTISTA. In 1732 Giovanni Battista Pergolesi composed a setting of the Vespers in honor of St. Emidius, Naples’s patron saint and protector against earthquakes. All that has survived are the introit Domine ad adjuvandum and three psalm settings: Dixit Dominus, Laudate and Confitebor. Malcolm Bruno’s reconstruction consists of Pergolesi’s Hymnus, Magnificat, several short instrumental interpolations, and the contrafactum of a secular cantata for the Salve Regina, thereby presenting a full cross-section of Pergolesi’s artistic evolution. The reconstructed Vespers ranges from the early Confitebor, with its allusions to Vivaldi, to the late Salve Regina with its reminiscences of thefamous Stabat Mater; from contrapuntal choral writing to operatic arias; and from the magnificently scored Dixit to the almost intimate Laudate. The present edition follows the original sources as closely as possible and contains an appendix with detailed notes on performance practice. Par . The musical appeal of the Blues, as they began to be heard in the early twentieth century, was so infectious that musicians with open minds and ears were drawn to it as soon as they heard it. And that appeal crossed the racial and ethnic divides that characterized American society. So it was, that even before African American guitarists were recorded playing fingerstyle blues guitar, their white neighbors had already begun learning the music?listening to, watching, and imitating the musicians whose music they so admired. And what these white musicians ended up expressing in their own playing and singing was not simply imitation, but their own reconfiguration of what their models did, played in accordance with their own senses of rhythm, phrasing and how to sing the music. In Hillbilly Fingerstyle Blues Guitar, author John Miller offers transcriptions, in tablature and standard notation, of twenty-eight pieces by these white fingerstyle blues players, taken from recordings made in the period 1926?1970. Some of the featured musicians in the book, like Sam McGee, Frank Hutchison, Maybelle Carter, Hobart Smith, and Roscoe Holcomb are pretty well known, but the tunes by more obscure players like Debs Mays, Lake Howard, or Lester McFarland certainly don?t suffer by comparison, and in many instances are spectacular. The pieces have been chosen for variety, too?you?ll encounter pieces played in C, E, and A in standard tuning, as well as songs in Open G, Open D tunings and an exotic offshoot of Open G tuning. Downloadable links to all of the original performances from which the transcriptions were made come with the book, so you can get the sound of the tunes in your head. The musicians in Hillbilly Fingerstyle Blues Guitar gravitated towards the Blues because the music spoke to them so strongly that they felt compelled to make it part of their own musical language. And they did just that. These performances are strong and worthwhile in their own right, but they?ll also show you how you can honor those who have inspired you by singing and playing in your own voice. And that?s an important lesson to learn. Includes access to online audio. / Date parution : 2021-11-03/ Recueil / Guitare

Par VANDE GINSTE STEPHANE. On January 1st, 2016, Stephane Vande Ginste had an extraordinary intention: he planned to compose a 1-minute piece for piano every single day for the whole year. The result is an impressive collection of piano miniatures which - although contemporary - result in a variety of musical styles: apart from some experimental pieces, there are jazzy- and poppy pieces, more traditional 'etudes', polyphonic compositions and so on... The 366 pieces also tell various stories: from very emotional events like the terrorist attacks in Brussels over homages in honor of deceased artists (David Bowie,...) to birthdays and festive occasions,... . More than once, even poetry (Heinrich Heine,Anna Enquist, ..) or other pieces of art inspired Stephane to compose his daily one-minute piece. Par RUEHR ELENA. In March 2023 I heard a concert by the Boston Symphony Orchestra of Go´recki’s Sorrowful Songs, and it reminded me of Barber’s famous Adagio for Strings. At the time I was writing my Eleventh String Quartet, and it moved me to write a piece inspired by these two emotional and lyrical works. The first movement is entitled ‘Long Night’ in honor of the long winter nights in Reykjavi´k, I was also thinking forward to the many challenges that lie ahead of us. In addition, I was anticipating the premiere in Reykjavi´k and was listening to traditional Icelandic music.
I heard some wonderful singing where the men and women played off of each other, and I wrote the final movement thinking of a springtime celebration after a dark winter. —Elena Ruehr

When Cuarteto Casals approached me with the idea of illuminating Beethoven´s quartets anew, you can imagine the many thoughts and feelings that where going through my mind: what a joy, what a great honor… What an intriguing head-scratcher! How can you possibly shine a new light on something that is already perfect? Weeks, months went by in search of a common ground between the Master and myself until I finally found it in the realization that a word lays “hidden” in the St. John’s hymn that gave musical notes their original name: ‘Re, Sol, Ut, Io’ (D, G, C, B in English music notation) Perfect! “Resolutio” in Latin means both the resolution of a problem and the re-solution: a re-blend of many elements that will eventually coagulate to make something new. There was finally the melodic and a rhythmical canvas for my piece. On this canvas I wrote the story of a funny little contest, played on a sunny Mediterranean square, between street musicians and Cuarteto Casals just minutes before they are about to go on stage to perform Beethoven´s “Harp Quartet”. After all the characters, each in his own way, had the chance to tell their story, a gentle rain starts to fall, dissolving (Re-solving) again the music sheet to eventually leave us with just a white piece of paper for somebody else to continue the Work. for String Orchestra Score and Parts. Par LONGFIELD ROBERT (Arr.). The Song of the Birds (El cant dels ocells) is a traditional Catalan Christmas carol. It was made famous by Pau (Pablo) Casals, who is considered one of the greatest cellists of all time. He was famous the world over and played for such notables as Queen Victoria, Theodore Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy. After Casals\' self-exile from Spain in 1939, he would open each concert with the playing of The Song of the Birds. In time, this song became an important symbol of his native Catalonia. The Song of the Birds has multiple stanzas each in the voice of a different type of bird expressing joy in the birth of Jesus Christ. Robert Longfield expresses this beautiful Christmas carol in legato singing lines using 2-3 part writing at Level 2.5. In recognition and honor of Pau Casals, the opening melody of Robert Longfield\'s arrangement is played by the cello section. / Date parution : 2022-07-30/ Répertoire / Orchestre à Cordes

Symphony for Winds, Percussion and Pre-recorded Soundscape. Par SHAPIRO ALEX. IMMERSION brings listeners on a sonic journey into a private, aquatic realm. Beneath the surface of the ocean is a world of liquid beauty and grace hidden from our eyes and from our imagination. Follow your ears and your heart to the deepest unseen places we often neglect to consider. Shapiro's electroacoustic wind symphony to the sea is at once a heartfelt, exciting, and deeply beautiful invocation to the Earth's most fragile environment. DEPTH, the opening movement, is an anthem to an underworld of grandeur that is home to the tiniest, and the largest, creatures on Earth, each equally imperiled by the reckless behavior of our human species. We must honor, respect, and marvel at these lives, rather than destroy them. SURFACE, the second movement, is a mini percussion concerto that reflects a Harbor seal's dramatic lunchtime assault on a Giant Pacific octopus, witnessed by the composer from her studio as she began writing this movement. A sudden explosion through the calm water revealed two animals flailing in battle one moment, then diving below to deceptive stillness ... until the next violent eruption. The seal eventually won its meal, but not without the chaos of significant effort. In this habitat of life and struggle, every day brings a challenge. BENEATH, the final movement, features the heart-wrenching song of a Pacific Humpback whale guiding us through the sea. Even in this magnificent environment of life and hope, exquisite creatures remain vulnerable to events triggered from beyond their fragile sanctuary. While IMMERSION was composed as a three movement symphony, each of the movements is also designed to be programmed alone, or in any combination. To perform the piece, you'll need an audio system capable of playing the prerecorded audio tracks from a laptop computer via a small digital audio interface connected to an audio mixer. The musical appeal of the Blues, as they began to be heard in the early twentiet...(+)
1. Hillbilly Fingerstyle Blues Guitar ? An Introduction 2. Learning the Songs 3. Understanding the Tablature 4.
