Rebecca Clarke's Come oh come my life's delight for SATB.for unaccompanied SATB to words by Thomas Campion. This is a lilting take on the Elizabethan lute-song full of smooth Stanford-like nineteenth-century harmonies exquisitely tempered with modal effects.Rebecca Clarke was born in Harrow in 1886 and died in New York City in 1979. She was one of the finest Viola players of her day and a skilful composer who studied with Stanford at the Royal College of Music in London. Her output as a composer was small comprising about 90 works but all these pieces are brilliant and powerful. Her Piano Trio and Viola Sonata are often playedand recorded and are now widely regarded as masterpieces. However her songs are perhaps her finest body of works and embrace a variety of styles from Blakean simplicity to brutal tragedy and outright farce. Rebecca Clarke's choral music was virtually unknown until Oxford University Press began to publish these works for the first time. She wrote for chorus and other vocal ensembles throughout virtually her whole career from her earliest attempts at composition around 1906 to her final flowering in the 1940s revising and recomposing until as late as 1976.

Rogier's Laboravi in gemitu meo is a deeply expressive setting of Psalm 6 verse 6. Featuring imitative entries word-painting undulating parallel phrases and oscillating harmonies the music of this motet perfectly reflects the anguish and poignancy of the text. Edited by Sally DunkleySally Dunkley's interest in 16th-century vocal music was established during her years as a student at Oxford University where she sang with the pioneering group the Clerkes of Oxenford and studied with its director David Wulstan. Since then her career as a professional consort singer has developed hand-in-hand with continuing in-depth study of themusic as editor writer researcher and teacher. The experience of working with several of the leading British groups in this area--she is a founding member of The Sixteen and sang over a thousand concerts with The Tallis Scholars--has afforded her unique insights into questions of performance practice. She has been involved in the preparation of practical scholarly editions over several decades and is increasingly engaged in sharing her experience through workshops and summer schools.

This carol was composed in March 2009 and bears a dedication to Jeremy Backhouse and the Vasari Singers with whom Pott has enjoyed a fruitful creative relationship over recent years. The folk ballad style of the anonymous traditional text lent itself well to a musical setting that preserved the original strophic arrangement and this in turn encouraged the use of textural variation in successive verses to offset repetition of the same musical material. One ‘verse’ of music actually spans two verses of text and therefore the first verse of the poem is here repeated before the fifth and last of the original an arrangement which permits three completemusical presentations. In the second of these the melody is sung by the tenors against a flowing wordlessly hushed background. In the third the melody deviates slightly presenting its central material slightly higher in pitch to create a restrained climax before a slower more melancholic peroration. Francis PottOver the past twenty-five years Francis Pott has acquired an international reputation as a composer of dramatic and emotionally challenging music. His writing unites a distinctive personal voice with a highly disciplined yet versatile technique that is rooted in a keen awareness of the past. Including a steady flow of major commissions his works are regularly performed recorded and broadcast throughout the world. Formerly Lecturer in Music at St Hilda's College Oxford he is currently Professor of Composition at London College of Music Thames Valley University.

On this day is a bright and exuberant upper-voice setting of the English version of 'Personent hodie' from Piae Cantiones (1582). The text and the manageable vocal parts make this carol particularly suitable for children's voices but it could equally be sung by adult choirs. The piano part featuring bell-like passages and a driving momentum contributes to an overall sense of jubilation. An excellent addition to any carol service or concert.Edmund JolliffeEdmund Jolliffe studied music at Oxford University and completed a Masters in Film Composition at the Royal College of Music. He also studied on the Advanced CompositionCourse at Dartington International Summer School and completed an artistic residency at the Banff Center Canada in 2010.
