The New Edition of Bach's Complete Organ Works
With repertoire works, musicians often have the choice between editions conceived for practical music-making and others that are more scholarly in concept. This also applies to the organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach, which are available today in various editions. Among them is that of Heinz Lohmann, which Breitkopf and Härtel began publishing in 1967 and whose concept strove for an amalgamation of practice and Urtext.
Current Urtext status, historically informed, edited with performers in mind:
More than 40 years later, the demands made on a new Urtext edition of Bach's organ works are as stringent as ever before. Next to the results of scholarly research on Bach and the sources, aspects of a historically informed performance practice are increasingly claiming our attention today. Also important for study, teaching and concert performance are, in addition to the above-mentioned demands, such external criteria as format, paper, convenient page turns and an easily legible layout that helps the user quickly grasp the musical context.
The new edition, beginning in 2010, also contains all keyboard works with pedal and the 'dubious works' that are hardly dubious anymore
The edition of Johann Sebastian Bach's organ works which Breitkopf and Härtel is beginning to publish in fall 2010 wants to do justice to these demands. Next to the core contents of the repertoire, it will also feature all of the master's 'clavier' works which require an independent pedal. Moreover, it will include all authentic early versions as well as the fragmentarily transmitted works. As to the dubious works, it will contain those which can be attributed to Bach today with considerable certainty.
It offers incerta, early, and alternative versions on CD-ROM
In this work group, the new edition uses for the first time the modern forms of editorial technique with which the synoptical depiction of various versions is made possible on CD-ROM. Thanks to the collaboration with the EDIROM project, which is a leader in the field of digital scientific editorial technique, the edition offers new types of solutions. Incerta, early, and alternative versions that cannot be included in the printed volumes for reasons of size or problems of authenticity, are published on CD-ROM, supplied with comments, and depicted synoptically. Thus, after comparing the versions, the player can decide upon a different version than the one printed in the volume, and can make a high-quality print-out of it. The texts and comments customary to the 'Breitkopf Urtext' editions comprehensive introductions, extensive source descriptions and text-critical observations can be found in the printed version of the volumes.

With Werner Breig (Erlangen), Pieter Dirksen (Culemborg/Netherlands) and Reinmar Emans (Bochum), a.o. we have brought together a team that guarantees the highest expertise in various domains. Further Bach experts such as Sven Hiemke (Hamburg), David Schulenberg (Boston) and Jean-Claude Zehnder (Basel) were also enlisted for the edition of single volumes.
Werner Breig (* 1932)
studied Evangelical church music in Berlin as well as musicology in Erlangen and Hamburg. He obtained his doctorate in 1962 and completed his habilitation (postdoctoral lecturing qualification) in 1973. He then devoted himself to musicology at the Universities of Freiburg i. Br, Karlsruhe, Wuppertal and Bochum. Since his retirement in 1997 he has been living in Erlangen. Between 1997 and 2007 Breig was appointed General Editor of the complete edition of Richard Wagners letters. He is the author of many publications and editions, particularly of early clavier and organ music by Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach, but also of Richard Wagner and Arnold Schoenberg. Furthermore he is the author of the Bach article in the dictionary Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (MGG, 2nd edition).
Pieter Dirksen (* 1961)
studied organ, harpsichord and musicology. His 1996 doctoral thesis on Sweelinck's keyboard music was awarded the Praemium Erasmianum. Dirksen has since published many studies on, and editions of, several masters of the 17th century (Sweelinck, Bull, Cornet, Scheidt, Scheidemann, Buxtehude, Luebeck, Johann Christoph Bach) as well as Johann Sebastian Bach. In collaboration with Harald Vogel, he edited Sweelinck's Complete Works for Keyboard Instrument (4 volumes, Breitkopf and Härtel). Dirksen is a member of the academic board of the Bach-Jahrbuch as well as a sought-after harpsichordist, organist and continuo player in international ensembles. Dirksen issued a number of much-acclaimed solo recordings (Sweelinck, Scheidemann, Boehm, Louis Couperin, Bach-Vivaldi, Bachs Art of Fugue and Goldberg Variations). Edison Winner 2003.
Reinmar Emans (* 1953)
studied musicology in Bonn and wrote his doctoral thesis on the cantatas and canzonettas of Giovanni Legrenzi in 1982. From 1983 to 2008 he was an academic staff member of the Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Institut Göttingen, and temporarily deputy of the managing director. He has taught in Bochum, Marburg, Detmold, Cologne and Hamburg, and has been a freelance contributor to various music periodicals. In 2000 he was responsible for the conception and direction of the Thuringian state exhibition 'Der junge Bach: Weil er nicht aufzuhalten' in Erfurt. He has conducted research and produced publications on opera and the cantata in 17th-century Italy, on stylistic development in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, and on editorial philology./ Répertoire / Orgue

Arrangement for Violoncello and Piano by Carl HüllweckThe gourmet's delightIn 1876, ten years before César Franck's violin sonata in the same key, Gabriel Fauré made a major contribution to the first flowering of French chamber music with his A-major Sonata op. 13. He even found a publisher for it right away, namely Breitkopf and Härtel in Leipzig. Both the work and the composer were warmly acclaimed immediately after the publication: This sonata contains everything that appeals to the gourmet: new forms, wonderful modulations, unusual tone colors, unexpected rhythms. With this work of such modest appearance, Mr. Fauré has leapt to the top ranks of the masters in one bound. Thus wrote Camille Saint-Saëns with pride about his pupil's work. The publisher seems to have picked out a true gem from Fauré's 'uvre, for the sonata soon became very popular, and in 1889, Breitkopf and Härtel heightened this popularity by releasing an arrangement for violoncello by Carl Hüllweck. It is likely that Fauré not only approved the arrangement, but also proofread it. Long out of print, this edition will once again allow cellists to enjoy Fauré's violin sonata in a competent period arrangement.

Au cours des années à venir, tous les concertos pour piano de Mozart sera publié dans les éditions urtext complètement nouveaux. En coproduction avec Breitkopf and Härtel, concertos sélectionnés seront publiés non seulement dans la réduction pour piano abordables, mais aussi avec le score approprié conducteur, parties d'orchestre et le score étude. Par BRAHMS JOHANNES. During his summer vacation in 1891 Brahms composed six vocal quartets which would appear in print later that autumn. This set, to become Brahms’s opus 112, clearly falls into two groups. The first two in the melancholic tone of the poems Sehnsucht (Longing) and Nächtens (At Night) by Franz Kugler come upon four Zigeunerlieder (Gypsy Lieder) bursting with vitality and power. The first public performances of the work were very positively received. Even while Brahms was still alive, the work was performed not only by the four solo voices originally intended, but also by choruses. In 1925, Breitkopf & Härtel approached the young pianist Wilhelm Kempff to prepare Clara Schumann’s “Instructive Edition” of her husband’s works for the new engraving. “[…] The comparison with the autograph and the Urtext edition [First Schumann Complete Edition], the results of the Schumann research, the modern principles of notation – all of this would have to be taken into account in the new engraving and could lead to a significant improvement in the edition without compromising the spirit of editing by Clara Schumann. ” The present edition thus conveys the reading of one of the most important pianists of the twentieth century, which we make fully accessible intime for the 200th birthday of Clara Schumann. Par LISZT FRANZ. Franz Liszt dedicated the Grandes Etudes De Paganini to Clara Schumann, whose pianistic genius he revered. Two of the Etudes in the collection deserve particular notice: no. 3 La Campanella (The Bell) enjoyed great celebrity for the extraordinary character of its sonorities. And in the closing a-minor Etude, Liszt took his place next to many other composers with his variations on Paganini's famous capriccio theme. En revanche, on ne peut hélas plus déterminer si le choix qu'il porta sur la Havanaise, cette danse caractéristique à deux temps, lors du remaniement de l''uvre deux ans plus tard est une allusion à l'origine cubaine de son ami violoniste. Quoi qu'il en soit, cette 'uvre connut un grand succès dès sa création, tant dans sa version originale que celle pour orchestre. Nous avons eu la chance de pouvoir compter sur Ingolf Turban pour les doigtés de la brillante partie de violon.

Par ZELENKA JAN DISMAS. The Missa Omnium Sanctorum ZWV 21 is Zelenka?s last mass setting. It contains three extended arias (one each for soprano, alto and tenor), concertante choruses and unusually expressive choral fugues. Especially powerful in effect is the through-composed Credo in this mass, with a ritornello that is one of Zelenka?s most beautiful inspirations. The score and parts material of this new edition are based on the corresponding volume of the ?Das Erbe deutscher Musik? series, from which Breitkopf and Härtel also took over both its informative preface as well as the critical report. 'Zelenka?s artistic personality, his biography and his compositional style are utterly distinctive. His style is highly experimental. Was Zelenka really one of the greatest composers of the 18th century, or only one of the most interesting' I think that he still has several surprises for us.' Günter Habicht composed music for folk instruments and contributions to educational literature as well as works for wind orchestra, chamber and orchestral music, including the ?Sinfonietta?, published in 1964 by VEB Breitkopf and Härtel Musikverlag Leipzig, and the award-winning ?Quartettino 1969? for wind instruments, created for a composition contest organized by the Association of Composers and Musicologists on the occasion of the GDR?s 20th anniversary. With an easy piano accompaniment, the sonatina for clarinet and piano ?Temperaments?, written in the same year, is particularly aimed at more advanced music students and amateur musicians. Each of the three movements represents one temperament (1. sanguine type, 2. melancholic type, 3. choleric type) that needs to be worked out during the rehearsals.
From 1935 to 1939, Günter Habicht (1916?2010) studied with Herbert Viecenz and Boris Blacher (music theory and composition) and with Walther Meyer-Giesow and Ernst Hintze (conducting) at the Dresden Conservatory. In 1951, Günter Habicht taught at an elementary school in Leipzig, and in 1952, he was appointed specialist lecturer for music at the Zentralhaus für Volkskunst. Arrangeur: Joachim Draheim. Par SCHUMANN CLARA. 'You can be rightfully pleased with what is coming!' announced Clara Schumann self-confidently in late 1855 to the 24-year-old Joachim upon sending him a copy of the 'Three Romances' op. 22 for violin and piano that had just been published by Breitkopf and Härtel. There is no doubt that her acquaintance with the young virtuoso had stimulated her to write the pieces already back in 1853. The two remained linked to the Romances after publication as well: Clara Schumann and Joachim often successfully performed them in their concerts in later years. After having temporarily fallen into oblivion, the Romances did not make their way more lastingly into the chamber musicrepertoire until 1983, when a reprint of the first edition was published. With the release of this new edition, today's interpreters can also be 'rightfully pleased' with Clara Schumann's Opus 22./ Répertoire / Violon et Piano
