Musicologist Thomas Daniel, a well-known specialist for the topic of Bach chorales, divided the chorales in two parts of about equal length: Chorales from cantatas, motets, and passions that were confirmedly written by Bach are found in the first part, while the second part includes chorales from later sources and printings, e.g. the four-volume edition published by Breitkopf in 1784 to 1787. Drawing on new sources, e.g. from the archive of the Berliner Sing-Akademie, some settings can even be attributed to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach – contrary to his claim in the preface of the Breitkopf edition that all “songs” were “created by my dear late father”.
The volume includes an informative preface and a separate introduction on the edition for both parts while giving editorial remarks for each chorale for the first time, directly below the score. Par MOUSSORGSKY MODEST / RAVEL MAURICE (Arr.) . Ravel’s brilliant compositional interpretation of the Pictures at an Exhibition is, to this day, the most famous and independent orchestration of Mussorgsky’s masterpiece. When the French composer turned his attention to his Russian colleague’s piano cycle in 1922, he was at the height of his mastery and Paris was enraptured by Russian music. Notated with remarkable accuracy in an autograph score, Ravel’s orchestration was an audience favorite from the very start. Jean-François Monnard, who previously edited the Breitkopf Urtext editions of Boléro , La Valse and Rapsodie espagnole , presents a text in which even the tiniest detail is authentic. The edition not only eliminates many previously undiscovered errors, but also offers a wealth of practical information on the long and multi-faceted performance history of the work, including the metronome markings of great conductors who were connected to the work in a very special manner. The New Edition of Bach's Complete Organ Works
With repertoire works, musicians often have the choice between editions conceived for practical music-making and others that are more scholarly in concept. This also applies to the organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach, which are available today in various editions. Among them is that of Heinz Lohmann, which Breitkopf and Härtel began publishing in 1967 and whose concept strove for an amalgamation of practice and Urtext.
Current Urtext status, historically informed, edited with performers in mind:
More than 40 years later, the demands made on a new Urtext edition of Bach's organ works are as stringent as ever before. Next to the results of scholarly research on Bach and the sources, aspects of a historically informed performance practice are increasingly claiming our attention today. Also important for study, teaching and concert performance are, in addition to the above-mentioned demands, such external criteria as format, paper, convenient page turns and an easily legible layout that helps the user quickly grasp the musical context.
The new edition, beginning in 2010, also contains all keyboard works with pedal and the 'dubious works' that are hardly dubious anymore
The edition of Johann Sebastian Bach's organ works which Breitkopf and Härtel is beginning to publish in fall 2010 wants to do justice to these demands. Next to the core contents of the repertoire, it will also feature all of the master's 'clavier' works which require an independent pedal. Moreover, it will include all authentic early versions as well as the fragmentarily transmitted works. As to the dubious works, it will contain those which can be attributed to Bach today with considerable certainty.
It offers incerta, early, and alternative versions on CD-ROM
In this work group, the new edition uses for the first time the modern forms of editorial technique with which the synoptical depiction of various versions is made possible on CD-ROM. Thanks to the collaboration with the EDIROM project, which is a leader in the field of digital scientific editorial technique, the edition offers new types of solutions. Incerta, early, and alternative versions that cannot be included in the printed volumes for reasons of size or problems of authenticity, are published on CD-ROM, supplied with comments, and depicted synoptically. Thus, after comparing the versions, the player can decide upon a different version than the one printed in the volume, and can make a high-quality print-out of it. The texts and comments customary to the 'Breitkopf Urtext' editions comprehensive introductions, extensive source descriptions and text-critical observations can be found in the printed version of the volumes.
Edited by a competent team:
With Werner Breig (Erlangen), Pieter Dirksen (Culemborg/Netherlands) and Reinmar Emans (Bochum), a.o. we have brought together a team that guarantees the highest expertise in various domains. Further Bach experts such as Sven Hiemke (Hamburg), David Schulenberg (Boston) and Jean-Claude Zehnder (Basel) were also enlisted for the edition of single volumes.

Arrangement for Violoncello and Piano by Carl Hüllweck The gourmet's delight In 1876, ten years before César Franck's violin sonata in the same key, Gabriel Fauré made a major contribution to the first flowering of French chamber music with his A-major Sonata op. 13. He even found a publisher for it right away, namely Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig. Both the work and the composer were warmly acclaimed immediately after the publication: This sonata contains everything that appeals to the gourmet: new forms, wonderful modulations, unusual tone colors, unexpected rhythms. With this work of such modest appearance, Mr. Fauré has leapt to the top ranks of the masters in one bound. Thus wrote Camille Saint-Saëns with pride about his pupil's work. The publisher seems to have picked out a true gem from Fauré's œuvre, for the sonata soon became very popular, and in 1889, Breitkopf & Härtel heightened this popularity by releasing an arrangement for violoncello by Carl Hüllweck. It is likely that Fauré not only approved the arrangement, but also proofread it. Long out of print, this edition will once again allow cellists to enjoy Fauré's violin sonata in a competent period arrangement.

Par RAFF JOACHIM. When his musical triad op. 192 was created in the winter of 1873/74, Raff was one of Germany’s most successful composers and the central artistic authority in the Hessian spa, royal residence and imperial city of Wiesbaden. With op. 192, Raff cultivated his reputation as an erudite composer who was a master of contrapuntal forms. By the time the string quartets were composed, he had already established himself as one of the most prolific and versatile suite composers of the 19th century, as is evident here in the various suite conceptions: Opus 192 No. 1 (in C minor), as Suite in the ancient style, has with Baroque labels stylized dance movements follow one another. Die schöne Müllerin [The Fair Maid of the Mill] op. 192 No. 2 (in D major), on the other hand, interprets the suite as a sequence of chapters in a musical narrative and thus becomes probably the first tone poem in string quartet scoring. In the third quartet (in C major), of which “Raff the artist was proudest,” other genre designations mix in among the dance movements, and with its free succession of different movement types, not usual for a sonata, it preserves structural openness. / Date parution : 2024-01-06/ Recueil / Quatuor à Cordes

Par RAFF JOACHIM. The Violin Sonata No. 1 in E minor, op. 73, a “Grand Sonata for Violin and Piano,” occupies an important position in Joachim Raff’s oeuvre: it reflects numerous artistic, aesthetic, biographical, and reception-historical aspects characteristic of Raff. The work was composed in Weimar in 1854, when Raff was going through a process of artistic self-discovery. He increasingly distanced himself from his mentor Franz Liszt and intensively explored Wagner as well as the ideal of absolute music – this is also reflected in the music of the sonata. While Raff described the first two movements as “objectified,” he perceived the last two movements as “a piece of” him, that is, not free of extra-musical influences.
The 1st movement, with its expansive main theme, is reminiscent of Mendelssohn; the 2nd movement reveals the refinement of classical-romantic work with musical material. The 3rd movement, with its partly rhythmic, virtuoso accompanying figures and harmonically advanced passages, allows a deeply “romantic,” almost tormented insight into a soul life à la Sturm und Drang. The partly irascible last movement revisits already familiar themes and thus creates a musical framework. / Date parution : 2024-04-27/ Répertoire / Violon et Piano

Par RACHMANINOV SERGEI. Large lines, catchy melodies and romantic sounds characterize Rachmaninoff’s legendary Second Piano Concerto. The composer played the premiere himself in Moscow in October 1901. The work quickly achieved international popularity, making it one of today’s most famous and most performed piano concertos ever. With this lasting success, Rachmaninoff had finally broken a prolonged creative block, and he continued to follow the 2nd Piano Concerto, op. 18, with significant compositions each year until he left Russia in 1917.
The present first Urtext edition, created in cooperation with the G. Henle Verlag, takes into account the autograph score, as well as recordings with the composer at the piano. Par BERTALI ANTONIO / BUXTEHUDE DIETRICH. Dieterich Buxtehude was an accomplished viola da gamba player. This is shown not only by the famous portrait of the Domestic Music Scene by Johannes Voorhout (1674), but above all by his compositions. Buxtehude’s affinity with the viola da gamba is evident in the demanding soloistic tasks that he assigned to the six-stringed instrument, most of which push the limits of its range. The Sonata is a transcription of a three-movement trio sonata for violin, viola da gamba and basso continuo by the Habsburg court Kapellmeister Antonio Bertali. Buxtehude arranged it for organ and viola da gamba. It is suitable for concert performance as well as for use in communion services in church and is therefore a welcome addition to the viola da gamba repertoire.

Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. Johann Sebastian Bach’s Magnificat BWV 243 is opule...(+)
Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. Johann Sebastian Bach’s Magnificat BWV 243 is opulent festive music that in many respects represents a special feature in his œuvre. The first version (in E-flat major, BWV 243.1) was premiered only one month after Bach took up his post as Thomaskantor in Leipzig in 1723. In the same year, Bach adds the four Christmas interludes, so-called Lauds, and performs the expanded version again on Christmas Day. Eventually, between 1732 and 1735, he reworks the work in many places and changes the key to a more trumpet-friendly D major. It is in this version (BWV 243.2) that the work later becomes generally known.
The present edition adopts the interlude movements of the E-flat major version in a transposed form at the appropriate places in the score, parts, and piano vocal score. This allows a performance of the Magnificat in D major with interludes without time-consuming page-turning or the use of separate editions. In a performance without interlude movements, these can be paged over via a separate counting with Latin letters.
In addition, the editor undertakes a new reconstruction of the movement 'Virga Jesse floruit,' which survives only incompletely in the autograph. The preface and critical report provide detailed information on this and other editorial questions. After the edition of the Magnificat by Johann Kuhnau (PB 32108), David Erler now presents a standard-setting new edition of the Magnificat by J. S. Bach which places the work in the context of the Leipzig musical tradition. / Date parution : 2024-04-27/ Répertoire / SSATB Solistes, SSASTB et Orchestre

Par MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY FELIX. The Overture to Ruy Blas, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s last overture, was not composed as an autonomously conceived score, but as the opening piece of a stage work. Nevertheless, its immediate success at the Leipzig first performance in 1839, as well as the fact that no further contributions to Victor Hugo’s drama followed from Mendelssohn’s pen soon made it well known in the concert hall. The work’s special history, including several arrangements occasioned by various performances, led to the fact that the overture had its largest circulation in the version of the posthumous first edition on which this edition is also based. / Date parution : 2024-04-27/ Répertoire / Orchestre

The composition, created in a “mad urgency and haste,” had already posed puzzles for his copyists. While Mahler was able to clarify some of them already in the engraver’s model, others remained unsolved. Performance and printing had to be left to posterity.
The text-critical edition offers interpreters for the first time a reliable foundation for what is definitely completed, and what must be considered as unfinished, open, questionable.
Among the special challenges of the Ninth are Mahler’s innumerable bowing marks in the string parts, which Otto Klemperer described as “partly unfeasible,” and the open question of the harp scoring, for which Bruno Walter found a convincing solution at the world premiere.
Finally an edition that not only reflects the orchestral practice of Mahler’s time, but also utilizes it for today’s needs. Helpful notes in the score and practical solutions in the parts are owed to the cooperation with experienced conductors and orchestral musicians. / Date parution : 2024-04-27/ Répertoire / Orchestre

Par CAMPOGRANDE NICOLA. The score is inspired by the urban gardens that are becoming a new, exciting presence in our cities. In such a setting I imagined the piano as an urban memory and the string trio as a green, vegetal presence that surrounds it. Doing that, I created in my mind three special places to develop the different movements of the score.
The first is indeed ideally On a Concert Hall Rooftop: some echoes of great piano concertos of the past – not their actual notes, rhythms, or sounds but just faint memories of them – come to visit the piano part, whereas the string trio is agitated by the pressure of plants that are growing up, seeds that are unfolding, and vegetables that are expanding.
The second movement is imagined In a Jazz Club Courtyard. There is something connected to a blues-style ballad, in the main theme, but some other different elements are part of the movement, from a dramatic climax to a variation where the piano part is written in a toccata style. The peculiar ability of jazz to devour and transform everything is evoked in the final section, where the strings, too, become part of the game: the piano presents some micro-quotes of classical repertoire in a jazz style and the dialog between the two worlds is strongly underlined.
The third movement hails from an urban garden created On a Studio Terrace and the general form, the musical materials, and some specific string solutions are connected to the job of recording and editing in a studio. Probably our imaginary plants are now big and strong, because their sound is full of energy and rhythm, and if you think you’re listening to a tomato or to some string beans ready to be picked, you’re not completely wrong.

Par SIBELIUS JEAN. This collection of Six Part-Songs for Female Voices contains six relatively different pieces that vary both in the language of their texts (Finnish and Swedish) and in length and number of voices. Nevertheless, they form a coherent and interesting set of moderate difficulty throughout, making Sibelius as a composer accessible to smaller female choirs and ensembles.
The pieces were written at different times and for different occasions. Kotikaipaus, for example, was written in the summer of 1902 as a thank-you gift for a serenade; Kansakoululaisten marssi was commissioned in 1910 for the 100th birthday of Uno Cygnaeus, the founding father of the Finnish educational system. Kantat was composed for a similar anniversary. The three pieces Soi kiitokseksi Luojan, Nejden andas and Terve, Ruhtinatar, on the other hand, are excerpts and arrangements of existing works for choir and orchestra. The latter two appear in print for the first time outside the complete edition as part of this collection.
The edition includes translations of the song texts in German and English as well as an informative preface by the editor, which, like the sheet music, is based on volume VII/1 of the complete edition Jean Sibelius Works. / Date parution : 2024-04-27/ Répertoire / Choeur de Femmes a Cappella

Par MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY FELIX. Certainly Robert Schumann was right when he stated soon after Beethoven’s death that the latter’s conception of the symphony as a great, universal confessional work was hardly to be continued by the next generation of composers. He saw a solution to the dilemma in the creation of autonomous concert overtures, such as those written, for instance, by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Four of his overtures were printed during his lifetime, and others were extant in manuscript, though frequently and successfully performed by the composer. Belonging to the latter group is the “Trumpet Overture,” begun in 1825 and performed three times between 1828 und 1833 on prominent occasions in Berlin, Düsseldorf, and London. / Date parution : 2024-04-27/ Répertoire / Orchestre

Serie III Bd. 8 Kammermusikwerke Weiterer Besetzungen. Par MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY FELIX. With the exception of the works for violin or violoncello and piano, to each of which a separate volume is devoted, all of Mendelssohn's other works for one or two instruments with piano are collected in this volume. Mendelssohn did not have any of these works printed.
They are the viola sonata MWV Q 14, composed between November 1823 and February 1824, the clarinet sonata MWV Q 15, composed in the immediate proximity of time, and the two concert pieces for clarinet and basset horn MWV Q 23 and Q 24, accompagnied by the piano and each described by Mendelssohn as a 'large duet for Dampfnudel or Rahmstrudel[,] Clarinett ud. Bassethorn' and dedicated to the Munich clarinet virtuosos Carl and Heinrich Bärmann, who obviously also wielded the wooden spoon with virtuosity.
Also included are the early trio MWV Q 3 for violin and viola with piano, The Shepherd's Song MWV R 24, Mendelssohn's only work for solo flute, and the duo for harp and piano entitled The Evening Bell MWV Q 20. This work is dedicated to Thomas Attwood and his daughter, who played the harp, its title and recurring repeated notes alluding to the repeated ringing of the doorbell, by which the coachman urged Mendelssohn to set out for the visit to the Attwoods in Norwood Surrey. / Date parution : 2024-04-27/ Recueil / Ensemble de Chambre
