The present new edition has adopted only as many changes as could be authentically traced back to the composer’s intentions of revision. Eine Tondichtung In Symphonieform In Zwei Teilen und Fünf Sätzen. Par MAHLER GUSTAV. “Titan”, the early five-movement version of the “Symphony No. 1”, has never been published before. Universal Edition is proud to make this score available for the first time in connection with the Complete New Critical Edition. Mahler composed the work at the beginning of 1888 in Leipzig. In 1889 it was subsequently premiered as a “symphonic poem” in Budapest.
Our first edition of “Titan” contains the history of its genesis, reviews of the performances in Hamburg and Weimar, a discussion of the programmes and the underlying ideas behind the work, colour prints of important sources, and an extensive critical commentary that describes the variants, problematic passages and all editorial interpolations.
At this point, we would like to refer to a statement by the International Gustav Mahler Society (IGMG), which is very concerned about Mahler editions that are not up to date with musicological research and thus cannot do justice to the composer's intentions.

Par PART ARVO. On 4 July 2011 Arvo Pärt performed his “Vater unser” (“Our Father”) for Pope Benedict XVI at a ceremony in the Vatican celebrating the 60th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. Pärt also presented the Pope with a copy of the manuscript, which is dedicated to him. To honour the anniversary, over 60 artists from around the world have been invited to contribute to a new exhibition of artworks. Amongst the artists are the composers Arvo Pärt, Ennio Morricone and James MacMillan.
To commemorate this historical occasion, Universal Edition has released a new edition of Pärt’s “Vater unser”, see UE35300. It includes a CD recording of the composer performing the work together with the boy soprano Heldur Harry Põlda, who performed with Pärt at the Vatican.

Flute solos from the 18th century In this edition, the Dutch flutist Rien de Reede undertakes a journey into the 18th century. The collection contains 34 works for solo flute, which have been selected with great care and edited according to music history aspects. Thus, the edition not only shines with a colourful compilation of solo works that stand out from one another in regard to their character. It is also as a historical testimony to the structural state of the flute at the time and the associated technical possibilities as well as the approach to composing for this instrument at that time. In addition to a number of multi-movement works, Rien de Reede publishes a number of wonderful individual pieces. In terms of composition, they are often characterized by the use of arpeggiated motifs and themes, large intervallic leaps or the ideas of suggested polyphony. Harmonic playfulness, required virtuosity, and the seemingly omnipresent balance of registers provide a constantly renewing tension in the individual movements. Not all works can be attributed to a composer, often one can only speculate. This edition is more oriented to practical performance than the New Complete Critical Edition. From the range designations of the Lieder, one can see that, despite the transpositions, not all fifteen Lieder of a volume are suited to one and the same voice. The alternative pitches and easier passages written by Mahler often for only one of the voice ranges of a Lied (and not necessarily always for the original voice range) are here provided for both voices. The Notes (pp.165-170) show for which voice these were originally conceived and whether this has to do with a purely vocal facilitation or a musical variant. Unlike the Kindertotenlieder , the fifteen Wunderhorn Lieder do not form a cycle and do not even suggest a unified collection of songs such as the Rückert Lieder. They can only be organized according to their sequence of composition, which should, however, have no influence on the choice or order of a performance. It reminds in no way of the ninth symphonies of famous predecessors. Two slow movements, an Andante comodo at the beginning and an Adagio at the end, form the frame for two of the most parodistic and embittered inner movements that Mahler ever wrote - a ländler-waltz combination, and the 'Rondo-Burleske', a bitter, ironic movement that is derisively dedicated 'to my brothers in Apollo'.
