Georg Friedrich Händel (1685 – 1759) was a German, later British, baroque composer who spent the bulk of his career in London, becoming well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems, and organ concertos. Handel received important training in Halle and worked as a composer in Hamburg and Italy before settling in London in 1712; he became a naturalised British subject in 1727. He was strongly influenced both by the great composers of the Italian Baroque and by the middle-German polyphonic choral tradition.

The solo sonata with bass continuo accompaniment (generally cello, and harpsichord or organ) was a popular form during the mid and late Baroque period. Handel composed such works throughout his creative life. During the 1720s a collection of 14 sonatas by Handel was issued as his opus 1 by the Amsterdam publisher Roger, an initiative followed soon after by the composer's London publisher John Walsh. Although Walsh's edition claimed his was "more correct," both appear to have been issued without Handel's imprimatur. The suggestion is almost certainly confirmed by modern scholarship, which by comparing both published editions with Handel's autograph scores and other manuscripts reveals them to be highly inaccurate. Since Handel's day several additions have been made to the canon, while four works, the Violin Sonatas in G minor, HWV 368, in F, HWV 370, in A, HWV 372, and in E, HWV 373 have been rejected as spurious. From this rather confusing picture we are left with 20 sonatas loosely collected together as "Op. 1," although of these several exist as variants of other sonatas.

The largest number, seven, are for flute, doubtless a reflection of the increasing popularity of the instrument among amateur performers during the eighteenth century. Six are scored for recorder, an instrument often also played by those who performed on the flute, while two are designed for the oboe, a professional's instrument, whose players doubled on the flute. Finally, there are five sonatas for violin, which until the increasing popularity of wind instruments in the late seventeenth century was the solo sonata instrument par excellence.

Sonatas of this period generally fall into one of two types, the sonata da chiesa (or "church" sonata), and the sonata da camera ("chamber" sonata). The majority of Handel's, 11 in all, fall into the former category, four-movement works cast in a slow-fast-slow-fast scheme, but he also employs the hybrid form that introduces dance movements (Op. 1, No. 8 for oboe), and the more modern three-movement form of the sonata in a fast-slow-fast sequence (the Oboe Sonata in B flat, HWV 357, the Violin Sonata in G, HWV 358, and the Recorder Sonata in B flat, HWV 377). Further exceptions are provided by the five-movement Recorder Sonata, Op. 1 No. 7, and Op. 1, No. 9, which exists in versions for both recorder (D minor) and flute (B minor), and whose usual total of seven movements resulted in it being erroneously split into two sonatas in the early edition. The solo writing in the sonatas is often technically demanding, suggesting that they were originally intended for professional performers. They are also unusual for the period in the degree of integration between the solo and continuo parts, thus creating greater contrapuntal interest than the many contemporary sonatas that restricted the keyboard part to the role of accompanist.

Although originally written for Oboe & Baroque Orchestra, I created this Interpretation of the Sonata in A Major (HWV 361 Op. 1 No. 3) for French Horn & Strings (2 Violins, Viola & Cello).
