Sans raison valable, cinq concertos violoncelles du Pleyel sont éclipsées par les concertos de ses contemporains, notamment par celles de Joseph Haydn. Contributions de Pleyel très originales au genre, cependant, qui sont parmi ses oeuvres les plus intéressantes, captivate une fois de plus l'auditeur par le biais du compositeur inventivité et charmant noblesse musical. Par HUMMEL BERTOLD. As an educational and recital piece, Bertold Hummel's Sonatina Op. 35, composed in 1969, has accompanied many a young musician following his or her own path. Having sold a thousand times all over the world, it is one of the composer's best-known works and has been included in the repertoire list for the 'Jugend musiziert' competition by the German Music Council. The three movements are characterized by warmth and exciting rhythms: in the powerful Maestoso, the sonority of the main theme is contrasted with a lyrical side theme - the recapitulation ends with an impulsive Fugato. The second movement Elegie consists of a single soulful melody over spherical harmonies of the piano. As a highlight, playful ease, marching rhythms and dramatic intensifications alternate in quick succession in the Finale vivace, followed by wild arpeggios that conclude the piece. Originally composed for violin, versions for viola and violoncello were already commonly used. To mark its 50th birthday, Simrock / Boosey and Hawkes present the work in a revised, newly set edition. Written in the 1990s by the composer himself and now available for the first time, the versions for alto and tenor saxophone are valuable additions to the repertoire for beginning instrumentalists./ Répertoire / Violon et Piano

A collection of six fabulous songs for Cello and Piano by Romantic composer Johannes Brahms. Although these are arrangements they were first published in 1896 by Simrock Brahm's publisher while the composer was still alive and so Brahms must have known of and accepted the arrangements. The notation of the old Simrock edition has been assimilated with that of the original vocal version especially with regard to the dynamics. Some of the cello's closing passages have been rendered more effective and fingering and phrasing have been modernised both technically and stylistically.

Rabl?s Quartet in E-Flat Major won first prize in 1896 in a prestigious competition for young composers sponsored by the Vienna Tonkünstlerverein of which Johannes Brahms was honorary president and a judge of the competition. Brahms recommended the piece to his own publisher Simrock who released it the following year along with three other Rabl works: the Fantasy Pieces for Piano Trio Op. 2 and two sets of Four Songs Op. 3 and Op. 4. The Op. 1 quartet appears to be the first work ever written for that combination which was later more famously used by Messiaen in his Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the end of time) composed in 1941.
