Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967) composed Adagio for violin and piano in 1905 and dedicated it to the outstanding violinist Imre Waldbauer. In 1910 Kodály made versions of the work for both viola and cello, while Norbert Duka transcribed it for double bass. Volume 11 of this popular series contains seven trios for cellos, from various periods of music history: two 18th-century Hungarian dances, D. Gabrielli's Balleto and Sarabande, a set of variations by Joseph Haydn, two famous minuets by L. van Beethoven, an Andante by Dotzauer and one of Schubert's Ländler. Most of the works are playable by music school pupils, but the effective pieces by outstanding composers will be of interest to more experienced musicians as well.Inhoud:1. Chorea Hungarica from the Lcse tablature2. Saltus Hungaricus (Mártonfi manuscript, Cs ksomlyó, 1813)3. Gabrielli, Domenico: Balletto alla Francese4. Haydn, Joseph: Adagio con variazioni5. Beethoven, Ludwig van: 2 Menuette6. Dotzauer, Justus Johann Friedrich: Andante7.

“A fragment can develop an enormous power of attraction for a composer, for the empty spaces create room for speculation and present incomplete ideas. 'Parafonia' is by no means a completion; rather, it is a very subjective continuation of a narration which makes a point of the fragmentary. Thus the material is exposed, newly spliced and repeatedly illuminated in different ways. Mozart himself took up the beginning of the adagio melody in his motet 'Ave verum' – this continued development is also narrated. And Liszt is greeted in the coda with his Ave verum homage 'A la Chapelle Sixtine'.” (Johannes X. Schachtner).

This Paert piano trio (UE030456) was written as a memorial to a violinist friend who had a special affinity for Mozart's works. Paert chose the deeply expressive Adagio movement from Mozart's Piano Sonata K.280 and layered string voices throughout in a sublime pairing of 18th and 20th century voices. The present edition substitutes a clarinet for the violin part.

The edition, prepared by Thomas Fritzsch, is based on the sole authentic source, a 19th-century copy. All preceding manuscripts are lost. Still available, however, is Friedrich Grutzmacher's pioneer edition (EB 3596, PB/OB 3842), which features a middle movement (the Adagio in G minor) originally found in the Violoncello Concerto in G major No. 7.The edition, prepared by Thomas Fritzsch, is based on the sole authentic source, a 19th-century copy.
