Thus it comes as no surprise that many of the pieces in this volume are arrangements by Bach of original compositions and of works by other composers. Next to the Sonatas BWV 525?530 and the Concertos or concerto movements based on pieces by other composers BWV 592?596, the volume also contains the Trio in D minor BWV 583, the Trio settings BWV 585?587 as well as the early versions of BWV 527 and 528. Moreover, the CD-ROM offers eight arrangements of trio movements by Bach made by others. In his detailed introduction, Pieter Dirksen discusses various aspects of these pieces' origins, inasmuch as they help us better understand the works. The organist will especially welcome the comments on performance practice and registration. It is precisely the fact that these works derive from chamber-music models that leads to individual considerations for each work group.

D minor BWV 1052-In early 1729 Bach became director of the so-called »Scottish Collegium Musician« a music organization of students and local citizens. The remarkable results of this undertaking are the concertos for harpsichord. Today it is almost certain that practically all of these concertos were transcribed from concertos for melody instruments (mostly violin or oboe).The D-minor Concerto BWV 1052 forms the opening item in Bach’s autograph score of his six harpsichord concertos BWV 1051 to BWV 1057 (Berlin Staatsbibliothek Mus. ms. Bach P 234). Bach scholars are unanimously in agreement that the piece was transcribed from a violin concerto in the same key. Concerto in the Old Style Concerto in A Minor (18th century style)-Now available for the very first time the reduction for violin and piano of Ottorino Respighi’s Concerto all’antica originally composed for violin and orchestra.Composed in 1908 Respighi’s Concerto all’antica reflects one of the most characteristic artistic aspects of this composer namely his love for ancient music. This can also be seen in those of his works that adopt the toccata and concertoforms (Toccata for piano and orchestra Concerto a cinque) as well as his use of the late Renaissance/Baroque style for the three suites in his Antiche danze ed arie per liuto or in his Uccelli. We find it again in hisSuites per istrumenti ad arco (1902) and his Concerto all’antica for violin (1908) here provided.

Concerto in D minor, (Il Gran Mogol), RV 431a<br />Concerto in E minor, RV431<br />This is the first modern edition, and reconstruction, of a flute concerto by Vivaldi discovered in April 2010 and a hypothetical completion of a known work by him (RV 431) that is closely related to it. The new work, which has the exotic title 'Il Gran Mogol', came to light among the family papers of the Marquesses of Lothian (the Kerrs of Newbattle), owned by the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh; its existence was known previously only from a mention of it in the sale catalogue of the Dutch bookseller and musician Nicolaas Selhof at The Hague (1759). The related work, the ostensibly 'incomplete' flute concerto in E minor, RV 431, is a revised version of 'Il Gran Mogol', but it lacks a slow movement in its only source (an autograph score in the volume Giordano 31 at Turin). Evidence suggests that the 'missing' slow movement of RV 431 would have been a transposed version, adjusted from G minor to A minor, of the central 'Larghetto' from 'Il Gran Mogol'. Accordingly, the edition presents the 'Larghetto' in this key as a suitable slow movement for RV 431, affording groups the opportunity to perform the work complete. A second violin part for 'Il Gran Mogol' is also missing in the only source; it has been reconstructed with the aid of the RV 431 score.<br /> In addition to shedding light on the 'incompleteness' of RV 431, the newly-discovered work draws attention to one of the contexts in which Vivaldi's concertos for solo transverse flute were created: the 'amateur' market, for which the composer readily supplied manuscript copies of his works in the 1730s. Alongside three other flute concertos in the same collection in Edinburgh, 'Il Gran Mogol' was probably collected by Lord Robert Kerr (?c.1719-1746), a flute-playing member of Kerr family, who died on the battlefield fighting the Jacobites at Culloden.<br />Vivaldi / Partitions classique / Ensemble et orchestre / Conducteur / HH EDITION
