Edition Peters est maintenant ravi de présenter la nouvelle édition de Roy Howat des « Trois Nouvelles Études » de Chopin au sein de « The Complete Chopin ». Publiées à l'origine en 1840 dans la « Méthode des Méthodes » qui regroupait plusieurs compositeurs, les « Trois Nouvelles Études » sont les études les moins ouvertement virtuoses de Chopin, mais sans doute les plus sophistiquées de toutes en termes de formation de la sensibilité du pianiste au son, au rythme et à la texture. Debussy a dit un jour qu'il avait « usé ses doigts » en jouant la deuxième d'entre eux.
180 ans après, il semble extraordinaire que de nouveaux détails puissent encore être trouvés dans les pièces, mais l'édition de Howat en publie certains pour la première fois, notamment un certain nombre de variantes mélodiques dans la première Étude, ainsi que des notes dans la deuxième Étude que toutes les éditions précédentes avaient supprimées. Agissant littéralement comme un pivot dans la structure de la seconde Étude, ces notes authentiques ? restaurées ici avec sensibilité ? modifient notre perception de la texture et de l?harmonisation de la musique au moment où la pièce prend son envol sur l?une des cordes de modulation les plus époustouflantes de Chopin. Notre édition confirme également certains doigtés authentiques encore inconnus de la plupart des pianistes, comme le pouce fantaisiste qui « sautille » sur les touches noires à la fin de la troisième Étude.

Conformément à la procédure éditoriale de cette série, la présente édition est basée sur une source principale, à savoir le manuscrit de Chopin soigneusement préparé pour son ami Moscheles. De plus, certains changements que Chopin a introduits après la publication sont présentés ici comme des variantes, permettant aux pianistes de choisir des options de performance en connaissant sciemment leur origine.

Le concept de travail qui sous-tend la série « The Complete Chopin ? A New Critical Edition » :
« The Complete Chopin » est basé sur deux prémisses clés. Premièrement, il ne peut y avoir de version définitive des ?uvres de Chopin : les variantes font partie intégrante de la musique. Deuxièmement, effectuer une fusion de plusieurs sources ? produisant alors une version de la musique qui n'a jamais vraiment existé ? doit être évité. En conséquence, la procédure de travail des éditeurs consiste à identifier une seule source principale pour chaque ?uvre et à préparer une édition de cette source-là (qu?ils considèrent comme « la meilleure », même si elle ne peut être définitive). Par HENSELT ADOLPH. The composer and pedagogue Adolph von Henselt (1814?1889) can truly be considered one of the founding fathers of the Russian School of piano playing. He counted among his pupils Nicolai Sergeyvich Zverev, the teacher of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin. Rachmaninoff considered Henselt?s Etudes the equal of those by Liszt and Chopin for their great beauty. Henselt?s music was well-known in his time, and in the repertoire of the greatest virtuosos of the 19th century, including Clara Schumann (who premiered his F minor Concerto with Mendelssohn conducting), Franz Liszt, Hans von Bülow, Vladimir de Pachmann and Alexander Scriabin. The two sets of Etudes Opp. 2 and 5 were composed just before Henselt moved permanently to Russia and each set was originally published as two books of six études. This new Edition Peters Urtext edition collects each set in its own volume, together with, in volume 1, a selection of Henselt?s Exercices préparatoires and, in volume 2, two additional etudes. It is edited by Daniel Grimwood, one of the composer?s most highly regarded interpreters, whose recording of the complete Etudes is available from Edition Peters Sounds. Par MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY FELIX. Felix Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah caused a sensation at its world première performance, sung in English, in Birmingham UK in August 1846. The huge forces marshalled for the occasion delighted the audience, who demanded no fewer than eight encores and loudly acclaimed the composer despite an injunction to observe the solemnity of the occasion by refraining from applause. Elijah has been an essential repertoire work for choral societies ever since. Original Version. Schumann?s Cello Concerto Rediscovered In her first Urtext edition for Edition Peters, internationally renowned cellist Josephine Knight reveals Robert Schumann?s original version of his Cello Concerto in A minor Op. 129 ? a piece he actually called a ?Concertstück? ? removing generations of inauthentic editorial interventions. This is the only available modern scholarly edition of the work as Schumann originally conceived it, and restores the text from October 1850, based on the composer?s manuscript held in the Biblioteka Jagiello?ska in Kraków. The story of the suppression of his Violin Concerto by well-meaning friends is relatively well-known. Few, however, know that the version of the Cello Concerto that is routinely heard today is so far from Schumann?s original conception of the work ? not only in details of phrasing and articulation, but also featuring a different ending with a bold final flourish from the cello. Composed in a burst of inspiration in two weeks in October 1850 shortly after he and Clara had moved to Düsseldorf, Schumann (who in 1850 was still in good health) never heard the piece performed. In an effort to promote a performance of the work, he gave the score to the cellist Robert Emil Bockmühl. Bockmühl made revisions that Schumann resisted, and the hoped-for performance never happened. Schumann?s health failed and he died aged just 46 in 1856. The Concerto, in an already substantially revised form, was premiered in 1860 but it was not given significant recognition until it was championed by Pablo Casals in the 20th century by which time (and since) the text for the work had accreted additions and alterations from generations of soloists. Now Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music, London has returned to the original 1850 manuscript of the work, which is in the Biblioteka Jagiello?ska in Kraków, to reveal Schumann?s original thoughts for the first time in a modern Urtext edition. The edition reflects Schumann?s original conception of the work as a Concertstück and restores Schumann?s musical text, free of posthumous interventions. ?My ultimate wish,? says the editor, ?is to give performers both access to, and confidence that they are playing from, an edition which is a true representation of the piece in its original form, no matter how much more difficult this might be. I found that incorporating the changes enabled the piece to take on a completely different character ? one that is lighter and happier, even ?cheerful?, as Schumann himself described the work.'
