Faber-Music - Wind ensemble

A 10-minute work which follows the journey of the Thames from its origins as a few drops of water in Wiltshire to the point where it meets the open sea. Along the way Hess draws upon many musical links along the Thames such as an old Wiltshire melody morris dancing in Oxfordshire boating songs from Berkshire.With such rich and diverse sources of music across several counties and centuries this has quite understandably become one of Hess's most popular wind band works to date.

Malcolm Arnold's Clarinet Concerto No.2 Op.115 was dedicated to Benny Goodman and first performed by him as part of the Red Rocks Music Festival with the Denver Symphony Orchestra conducted by Brian Priestman on 17 August 1974. The third movement known affectionately as The Pre-Goodman Rag is an outrageous ragtime parody with a hauntingly wistful middle section. The work has now been made more widely available in this transcription for wind band.

Firefly was composed by award-winning composer Simon Dobson (b.1981) to provide an entertaining up-tempoconcert work for community and youth bands. Composed in funk-rock style and is based on the groove beat with which it opens. Dobson says “Firefly was written as a break from my more serious music and as a ‘hat tip’ to the various types of beat orientated music I listen to.” It was first performed by Oslofjord Brass in Norway and in its wind version by Harmonie Shostakovich Switzerland. Par HIGGINS GAVIN. Der Aufstand (German for 'riot') is not a descriptive work, nor is it solely based on the riots of 2011. It does, however, draw on the idea of opposing forces and escalating anger. The work falls into two contrasting sections that are linked by a series of repeated, 'screaming' chords. A slow build drives the first section from a single pitch to a blazing orchestral tutti. The second section is a fast and wild series of fanfares and driving rhythms that ultimately cannot be sustained. In many ways this mirrors the first. Both sections open on single tones (Bb and E) and grow to a climax of brass and hammered chords. The first performance took place on the last day of the 2012 Olympic Games. Cette deuxième série de Danceries continue le format établi en Danceries (Set I), à savoir l'utilisation de matériel provenant Maître à danser Playford, une collection de folk et de mélodies populaires publiés dans le XVIIe siècle, pour former la base d'une suite de danses prolongée. Dans cet ensemble, les mélodies ont été plus abstraite et seul projet un écho lointain de leurs formes d'origine, mais comme avant, chaque mouvement est autonome, colorée et directe, avec son ambiance distincte. Les mouvements extérieurs - Bawbee Jennie et Galliarda Peascod de - partagent une utilisation de la conduite de percussion par écrit avec un air militaire. Toye Tom Tinker et facilité coeur (mouvements deux et trois) sont les deux paramètres de mélodies originales. Tous les mouvements sont plus étendus que dans le premier set, avec une utilisation plus libre et l'approche de la matière- mélodies se produisent maintenant dans différentes touches et sont soutenus par une grande variété de couleurs harmoniques. Chansons de Normandie was commissioned by the Central Band of the Royal Air Force and premiered on BBC Radio 2 as part of their D-Day broadcast from the Royal Albert Hall on June 6th, 2014. This 4 minute piece is based on three traditional Normandy folk songs: Les Metamorphoses, Le marchand de velours and Le corselet. An ideal concert opener, the work is in a lively dance tempo with suggestions of Renaissance dance music./ Répertoire / Orchestre à Vent

Commissioned in 1994 by the Royal Air Force 'Scramble!' is a concert overture for symphonic wind band inspired by images of the RAF's airfields during the Battle of Britain immortalised for ever in such films as 'Reach for the Sky'. The pastoral opening depicts the lull before the storm: the young pilots sitting in wicker chairs outside their barracks on a sunlit morning. The peace is of course deceptive suddenly amid siren sounds there is a shout of 'Scramble!' and a rush to the waiting planes. In no time at all the squadron is airborne heading for a skirmish over the English Channel and beyond. A lyrical central section featuring a solo cornet depicts the stillness manypilots described as they flew to engage the enemy before the battle breaks out once more. For those who returned it would be only a short while before once again they would hear the familiar shout of 'Scramble!'

The TV Detectives brings together five of Nigel Hess’s best-known television themes (Dangerfield Campion Wycliffe Maigret and Hetty Wainthropp Investigates) all originally written for small-screen sleuths in whodunits that have been enjoyed by TV audiences worldwide. Dangerfield is a BBC series about a Warwickshire police surgeon and originally starred Nigel le Vaillant before Nigel Havers took over the lead role. Campion also from the BBC was based on Margery Allingham’s stories of a mild-mannered 1920s gentleman detective played by Peter Davison. Wycliffe was a long-running HTV series set in Cornwall and starred Jack Shepherd as a somewhat dour andlow-key DCI - but of course he always solved the case! Michael Gambon starred in Granada TV’s latest incarnation of the famous French detective Maigret while Patricia Routledge played the OAP sleuth to perfection in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates another popular BBC series. For the first time these popular tunes which conjure up their programmes perfectly have been arranged for wind band in a continuous suite.

Battles was written for the restoration of the epic 1927 silent film The Battles of Coronel and Falkland Islands and was commissioned by the British Film Institute (BFI) in 2013. The work presents eight contrasting scenes as a continuous sequence: War Introduction of Admiral von Spee German Banquet Building Steam/Preparing Islanders Call to Arms Great Battle at Sea and Victory. The original score was written for a small chamber orchestra symphonic brass and a substantial batterie of tuned and untuned percussion. Battles has been edited for symphonic wind orchestra with percussion and harp.Composer Simon Dobson says of hiscolourful score ?I wanted to keep things simple and clear so there is a British theme a fanfare march idea often heard on trumpet and a German naval theme which is a more angular motif.?
