This colorful, jazzy suite draws inspiration from the ancient art of gazing into smoke from fire to find stories through the act of divination. Into the Blaze suggests someone briskly fire-walking, barefoot, with unexpected sparks fizzling from the ground. A Lonesome Ember captures the fleeting life of a small ember, beginning insignificantly and gradually evolving into a larger being before disappearing into ash, while Spark of Light bristles with life and energy. Firefly was composed by award-winning composer Simon Dobson (b.1981) to provide an entertaining uptempo concert work for community and youth bands. This arrangement for concert band, composed in funk-rock style, and is based on the groove beat with which it opens. Dobson says, Firefly was written as a break from my more serious music and as a hat tip to the various types of beat-orientated music I listen to. It was first performed by Oslofjord Brass in Norway and in its wind version by Harmonie Shostakovich, Switzerland.

King Arthur was the first of 28 scores Benjamin Britten composed for radio between 1937 and 1947. It was an ambitious dramatization of King Arthur's life and times; part pageant, part play, part cantata; written by D.G. Bridson. This colorful suite incorporates the Introduction, a dramatic Wild Dance, some of the music underscoring the scenes for Galahad and The Holy Grail, and two vivid battle scenes, ending with The Final Battle and Apotheosis. King Arthur (scenes from a radio drama) for brass band should not be confused with a much longer orchestral suite, which Paul Hindmarsh devised from the same source in 1995.

Carl Vine's Piano Concerto No. 1 (1997) is one of three large-scale works composed with pianist Michael Kieran Harvey in mind---the others being his first two piano sonatas. Vine describes it as a conscious and continuous tribute to the piano concerto as a medium and historical entity, a fact most apparent in the slow movement, with its long melodic lines evoking both Ravel and Bach. This 25-minute concerto is cast in the familiar three-movement form, with fast outer movements framing a central slow movement. The outer movements share some material (particularly in some lively conversational interchanges between piano and trumpet), and also some typically pianistic glitter across the orchestra, with harp and glockenspiel ensuring that the piano is less of an outsider than might have otherwise been the case.

Colin Matthews's Turning Point (2006) represents a bold stylistic breakthrough for its composer. Out of a whirring, motoric scherzo comes a jolting sea change: an austere, glacial string chorale of searing intensity that, with gritty resilience, gradually comes to overwhelm everything else. Commissioned by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, this 25-minute journey from complex momentum to expressive simplicity displays all the ingenious craft we have come to expect from Matthews, together with a new-found emotional directness.
