Two pieces from the score of the full-length ballet Edward II. The ballet iteslf was commissioned by the Stuttgart Ballet and completed in 1995. The first performance took place in Stuttgart in April 1995 and in the same year this arrangement for 2 Pianos of two scenes was commissioned by the Port Fairy Festival of Australia.The first pieces represents one of the lighter moments of the ballet and is based upon a set of dances at the French Court> The second piece is a reminder of the darker nature of the ballet as a whole expressing the lust for power as the Barons opposed to Edward II unite in anger at his behaviour.

Cyril Scott was an English composer writer and poet. He was essentially a late romantic composer whose style was at the same time strongly influenced by impressionism. His harmony was notably exotic. Scott wrote around four hundred works which include two mature symphonies three operas three Piano concertos concertos for Violin Cello Oboe and Harpsichord several overtures four oratorios as well as a mass of chamber music.Scott is undoubtedly best known for the solo Piano piece Lotus Land which is transcribed here for two Pianos. LotusLand seems impossibly modern for 1905 and additionally possesses a preternatural sense of jazziness. It has been recorded over fifty times both in its original form for Piano and in a wide variety of arrangements from vocals to jazz groups and from Brass bands to Synthesizer. Later Scott also wrote a poem with the same name.

'This work takes for its title that of the gegika novel by Yoshiro Tatsumi which deals with the interconnected lives of two young brothers and their obsession with Japanese manga. They end up reading each other's attempts to write manga themselves and eventually form a collective. The idea of two children growing up whilst criss-crossing artistically fitted with my initial ideas for this work for two pianos commissioned by Cambridge Suzuki Young Musicians.'Tarik O’Regan May 2010

Variations Nocturne & Finale On An English Sea-Song for Piano and Orchestra Op.60. Orchestral part arranged for a second Piano by David Lyon. After a brief introduction to the Orchestra the melody of an eighteenth century whalermen's ballad with verse and refrain 'Blow Ye Winds' is given out the verse by the Piano the refrain divided between Orchestra and Piano. Then follow thirteen variations the last three being pianistic etudes accompanied Orchestrally. The nocturne evokes the nostalgia of a long voyage and the finale the excitement dangers and glory of a triumphant chase. In these movements as well as in the variations the entiremusical material is derived from the basic theme. The work is designed as a virtuoso concert-piece for the pianist with supporting Orchestral flashes of colour and points of contrast.

The Prelude Hymn And Toccata 1987 is dedicated to and was commissioned by the Nettle-Markham Piano Duo. It was the second work to have been written for them by the composer the first being the Sonata For Piano Duet Op.92. This twenty minute work begins with Leighton's typical preludial double-dotted rhythms and contrapuntal textures; it develops into dark passionate music and erupts into single and double cadenzas. The gentle Hymn is ushered in quietly and unfolds in long rhapsodic sections building up to more climactic cadenzas before dissolving gradually to an ethereal conclusion. The Toccata finale shows Leighton's masterly piano writing andcontrasts biting rhythmic motifs with sweeping yearning elegiac phrases.
