Gustav Mahler, né le 7 juillet 1860 et mort le 18 mai 1911, était un musicien autrichien. Bien qu?il fût principalement connu à son époque comme chef d'orchestre de premier plan, il est surtout célèbre aujourd'hui comme un compositeur important dont l??uvre jette un pont entre la fin du XIXe siècle et la période moderne. Il a écrit dix symphonies et plusieurs cycles de lieder dont Das Lied von der Erde.
