This is the first in a series of books and audio/video recordings which describe a simple and pragmatic approach to improvisation. While focusing on the jazz idiom, the techniques discussed are applicable to many styles of music and all instruments, be it rock guitar, jazz saxophone, or the solos of the fusion keyboardist. The system presented in this volume offers a tangible pathway to inside the creative imagination by getting inside harmony, inside the changes. Chord changes are included for C concert, B-flat and E-flat instruments. In addition the book includes transposed examples for all instruments (C treble clef, B-flat, E-flat, and bass clef). The accompanying recording has been designed for use in conjunction with each of the chapter assignments. There are nine tunes for you to play along with, each played at a slow and then medium tempo featuring Garry Dial on piano, Dave Santoro on bass, and Alan Dawson on drums, plus 12 demonstration tracks performed by the author on piano and/or tenor saxophone. La bible de tout improvisateur, ce volume est consacré plus particulièrement aux structures mélodiques. Le CD contient 9 morceaux en 2 versions (lente et à tempo) et 12 démos jouées par l'auteur. Developing a Jazz Language, is the sixth volume of Jerry Bergonzi's series, Inside Improvisation. Learning a language requires listening on many levels to the meanings, the sounds, the intentions, and the inflections or nuances of the language. The first chapters of this volume on learning the language of jazz focus on the prerequisites of chord scales, approach notes to chord tones and target notes, scale motives and sequences, and lines.Part two qualifies improvisational techniques into three areas; melodic, harmonic and sonic (rhythmic devices are the focus of Vol. IV, Melodic Rhythms) and it is designed as a menu of soloing devices from which you can select your personal course of study. Over 100 specific devices are discussed and conceptualized so as to give the improviser more depth of expression and a greater well from which to draw ideas. Among the numerous topics presented are: guide tones, voice leading, chord substitutions, three tonic system for composition, tritonics, hexatonics, tonal expansions, whole tone playing, augmented symmetric scales, double diminished scales, limited range and large range playing, shapes, blues melodies, accents, comping as a soloing device, common tones, articulations, laying back on the...The book includes free downloadable audio tracks of twelve standard chord progressions, each played in two different tempos.

This lighthearted quodlibet was commissioned by ASTA and premiered at the 2015 conference. It provides a fabulous tool to introduce your students to key musical themes across time. The score plays off of the musician's nocturnal mind to combine twelve historic themes by condensing and expanding them the way our subconscious mind often toys with daytime experiences. In total, this composition celebrates the string player's full potential: Where loyalty to the written note serves the imagination's creative playground. What is composition, if not a grand improvisation captured in a snapshot?.I am a firm advocate for creative conducting, so I encourage you to experiment with changes in tempi to segue between themes, and/or to take musical liberty with the actual transitions between the themes, as long as there is still a feeling of forward momentum. If you want to fulfill the theatricality of the score, it would be fabulous to look at the audience (with a raised eyebrow, or a smile on your face, or whatever facial expression you think suits these moments in the score) at m. 14 and again at m. 21.In addition, it will help to conduct with wider gestures when themes change or the volume suddenly drops or swells. This will help the audience understand that these sudden changes between themes or dynamics are intended and will also help the students highlight those spots (particularly across the complex thematic shifts between mm. 62 and 94).The grandiosity from m. 110 through the end can be pushed to its zenith, particularly if you control prior forte settings such that the end gets the grand push.CAS91FThemes in String Dreams include:1. Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star2. Second Kreutzer Etude3. Concerto in A Minor, Vivaldi 4. Cello Suite No. 1, Bach5. St. Louis Blues, W.C. Handy 6. Many different possibilities for harmonizing the same melody are illustrated and analyzed, using techniques by such influential arrangers and composers as Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Oliver Nelson, Gil Evans, and Clare Fischer. Techniques of melody harmonization are covered, along with linear writing, and counterpoint for 2, 3, 4, and 5 horns. A chapter on writing for the rhythm section clearly illustrates the techniques commonly used by jazz arrangers and composers. Six complete scores in concert key are ideal for analysis, for playing the horn parts on the piano, or for following the performances on the CD. An extensive chapter on form and development deals with extended compositional forms and the use of compositional techniques in writing for the small jazz ensemble. A useful discography is included at the end of each chapter. Many students lead an independent musical life apart from their normal piano lessons; they play jazz or pop music and make some attempts at improvisation without it being possible for the teacher to intervene and to supervise matters of technique, fingering , phrasing etc. The purpose of this volume is to create an additional link between teacher and pupil by making avaliable some small exercises in current jazz and blues styles. An additional stimulus should thus be given to the pupil who has a liking for musical forms of this kind, but not at the expense of the teacher's supervision of the necessary technicalside of piano playing. A hort holiday from Classical sonatinas and studies should help him to get over a time of boredom, so that he will eventually return to tratitional material with even greater enthusiasm. And in several pieces there is an opportunity to improvise above the harmonic pattern in the left hand. Blues-Rock Number one * Funny Scales * Mixolydian Etude * Alberti-Blues * Triads * Blue Waltz * Zirkus-Rag * 5/4 Boogie * Daddy's Bop Rhythm * Sleep Well Blues.
