Harr i Wessman (b. 1949) is interested in all aspects of music that may be expressive, without in any way ignoring the possibilities of melody. He himself describes his harmonic method as a kind of contrapuntally treated jazz harmony. During recent years pedagogic music has become a more and more central area in his output with an emphasis on creating repertoire for budding musicians, from beginners to young professionals. I don't write children's music. Stylistically I write in the same way as for professionals; technically, the pieces just have to be easier to play. Concertino No. 2 for piano and chamber orchestra was commissioned by a Finnish press house Yhtyneet Kuvalehdet Oy for the inauguration of their new office building in 1987. According to the original plan the concertino was to be used in an advertising film of the company. A melody with wide arch which can be heard in the midpoint of the piece, first played by the orchestra and then repeated with the piano, was intended to be the theme song of the film. The 10 minutes duration and small orchestra (flute, oboe, clarinet and strings) makes this one movement piece suitable also for young orchestra players.

Eina r Englund’s (1916-1999) Flute Concerto (1985) is beyond dispute one of his greatest works. Its finest attributes are its rich melodic invention, colourful instrumentation and immediate message. Add to these its rewarding solo part, and the result is truly one of his best concertos – and works. He himself did not hesitate to regard it as such. It was premiered in Helsinki on September 16, 1985, having been completed at Ljugarn on the Swedish island of Gotland at the end of June. The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra was conducted by Leif Segerstam, and the soloist was the concerto’s dedicatee, Mikael Helasvuo. The Flute Concerto opens with a Ritornello in which the flute's playful, dance-like passages make sharp contrast with the orchestra's heroic stance. In the mellow Canzona which follows, the flute plays rhapsodically over repetitive orchestral figures. The work's action-packed finale hints at parody in its military march-like opening, but also gives rein to the lyricism already familiar from the second movement. This product includes the solo flute part and the piano reduction. The orchestral study score (composer’s manuscript) is available for sale (product number 9790550117471). The performance material is available for hire from the publisher. Duration: c. 23’ Instrumentation of the orchestra: 3(III=picc)222–4330–1 4–harpsichord(+celesta) –hp–str.

Ann- Elise Hannikainen (1946-2012) was born in Hanko, Southern Finland, but lived mainly abroad, her father working as diplomat. Her grandfather's father was P.J. Hannikainen, the head of a prominent Finnish musical family. Ann-Elise's attraction to music was first found at age of five, when her family, then living in Warsaw, bought a grand piano. Hannikainen started to study piano playing at the Sibelius Academy in 1967, but rheumatoid arthritis prevented her from pursuing a carrier as a concert pianist. In 1972 she moved to Madrid and started to study composition with Ernesto Halffter Ercriche, a student of Manuel de Falla. Hannikainen advanced quickly in her career, and her piano concerto was premiered in Helsinki Festival in 1976. Her composing style evolved into luminous melodies, free atonal harmonies and improvisatory forms. Hannikainen wrote the two piano pieces Pensamientos 1974 (1974) and Toccata-fantasia (1975) in El Escorial. The first one carries features typical for piano writing of the Late Romantic, whereas the playful and improvisatory Toccata-fantasia gives a neoclassical impression.

With his 'Concerto classico' composed in 1999, Bertold Hummel enables violin pupils with only limited technical skills to play an entire little violin concerto. The second movement, Elegy, is now also available as a separate edition for viola and piano. The melody of the Finnish folk song forming the thematic foundation of the movement is melancholy and gentle: a short simple theme which is introduced and then varied several times. To master this piece, it is sufficient for the violist to command the first position, and the piano part is easy to play as well. An ideal piece for pupils, competitions and for music-making at home.

In this sonata, calm passages alternate with extremely lively ones in traditional style. The piano plays in chordal style most of the time as real accompaniment, with polyphonic ensemble playing not being given special emphasis. The sonata is characterized by melodious cantilenas of the violin, intricate rhythms and almost symphonic tonal eruptions alike. The piece demands great technical skills while actually seeming to be easy to grasp.Mustonen is one of the virtuoso pianists-composers of the younger generation. In his works, he often refers to the history and culture of his home country Finland. He performed the world premiere of his Violin Sonata with the young Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto in London in April 2013.

Stringendo - Contemporary works for violin and piano (2022) is a collection of ten pieces, which vary greatly as regards their genesis. That by Harri Wessman is playful and exhilarating; Mikko Heiniö wrote his on Women's Day, while the duets by Kalevi Aho and Matthew Whittall are tributes to the late Jaakko Kuusisto. Einojuhani Rautavaara is also represented, in an arrangement for violin and piano of his plaintive, melodic Sydämeni laulu (The Song of my Heart). The title of Lotta Wennäkoski's work, Vestige, is a fitting symbol for the whole collection.Short introductions to the pieces by their composers are included in the collection in English, Finnish, and Swedish.Contents< br>Kalevi Aho (b. 1949): Le Tombeau de J. Critics responded warmly to its colour, vitality, and strong individuality. The same qualities are found in Five Distressed Surfaces, a collection of fascinating character studies that also reflect the composer's skills as a pianist and improvisor. Though not intended to be played as a suite, the individual pieces are linked by a concern with visual, plastic and even tactile sources of inspiration, and by a quietly disruptive humour.
... Morgan Hayes' piano works, Flaking Yellow Stucco and Le Lardon, were elegantly explosive in [Stephen] Gutman's performances.
