The Scrutinies occur on the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of Lent, when the Elect are called before the community for exorcism and prayer. The simple Kyrie (with a spoken Confiteor) could be used as the Penitential Rite for the entire Lenten season, whether or not the Intercessions are used. The melody is the same for the Kyrie-Christe- Kyrie, but the accompaniment is varied and the choral parts unfold from unison to two-part mixed to SAB.

Here is a brand new offering from Paul Tate, reminiscent of an Irish folk song, bringing comfort to those who hear it. The optional C instrument part enhances the tranquil melody and textured choral writing. Appropriate for funerals or other times when comfort is needed.

First appearing in a complete Mass setting written for a diocesan choral festival, Richard Hillert’s “Lord Jesus, from Your Wounded Side†has found its way into many hymnals as a suggested song for the rite of sprinkling with baptismal water. The harmonies and instrumental parts can be added gradually upon subsequent repetitions, allowing for music that can be timed to perfectly fit the liturgical action. Trumpet or oboe parts are optional. .

There are quite a number of fine anthems that celebrate the role of music in worship and that tell us to “sing a new song,†but this Troeger text is unique in that it is a prayer of thanksgiving to God for the gift of hymns, carols, anthems, preludes that continually lift our hearts. The music is an attractive tune scored in two and four parts, with a final robust stanza for unison voices with descant. .

A paraphrase of Psalm 77 that gives voice to the church when events in life seem to leave us without hope. Think 9/11, Katrina, Fukushima, Tucson… Ideally, the piece will be sung by an alto soloist who can convey the angst of the text, supported by an attentive keyboardist and choir. .

The text speaks of discipleship and would be a great choice for events focusing on social justice, for a commissioning/sending anthem, or even as part of a healing and reconciliation service. The question of the final phrase (“Shall we now refuse God's call?â€) is reflected in the unsteadiness of the musical line, which seems to say, “It's up to each of us to do our part.â€.

The refrain’s melody in this selection sways gently and slowly, much as a parent might cradle a babe in her or his arms, the verses expand the usual textual elements of this ancient chant, punctuated by echoes of the refrain. At the end of each verse, a short interlude by the accompaniment adds to the restfulness one feels. It’s an easily learned piece of simple beauty. Included in the octavo are parts for flute, oboe, and cello as well as a reproducible congregational part.
