Henry Purcell’s only Opera proper Dido and Aeneas is a magnificent example of English Baroque music with lively dances and passionate aria sections that demonstrate Purcell’s masterful compositional and choral writing skill. Based on a libretto by Nahum Tate it was first performed in 1689 comprises three acts and lasts about an hour. Filled with dramatic lyricism with a wide range of musical and emotional content it is a monumental Baroque composition considered to be one of England’s foremost operatic works. Dido and Aeneas contains all the elements for a successful opera including a shipwreck sorcery love and lost love anddeath. This is the Vocal and Full Operatic Score edited by Margaret Laurie and Thurston Dart. With its interesting and imaginative realization and authentic editorial process this is an excellent edition that features some performing choices and variants and also includes the reconstructed prologue.

Lucia di Lammermoor de Gaetano Donizetti, ecrit sur un livret de Salvadore Cammarano, a ete cree au Teatro di San Carlo de Naples le 26 septembre 1835. Il est reste au repertoire sans interruption comme l'un des operas les plus populaires de Donizetti tout au long de son existence de pres de 200 ans. L'edition propose comme texte principal une version de l'opera qui, en majeure partie, est aussi fidele que possible a celle donnee lors de la premiere a Naples. L'edition critique retablit les tonalites originales, conservant ainsi la conception harmonique globale de Donizetti, mais aborde les transpositions qui sont entrees plus tard dans la tradition d'interpretation et d'edition de l'opera. Mendelssohn authority John Michael Cooper, in his extensive Introduction to this new Urtext edition, shows that the comparison is completely unfounded: with this work Mendelssohn created a new genre to which he gave the name ?symphony-cantata?. Later he added a secular counterpart with ?Die Erste Walpurgisnacht?.<br />Drawing on all relevant sources, Cooper provides a detailed account of the genesis and structure of this monumental work.
