They are intended to be sung in a large resonant acoustic with the main choir andstring orchestra at one end of the building and an echo choir and string quartet at the other. The percussion (tubular bells gongs and tam-tams) should sound from a gallery or other raised position.The Hymns wereinspired by the transparent poetry of George Herbert and are dedicated in gratitude and love to the memory of Mother Thekla former Abbess of the Orthodox Monastery of the Assumption Normanby near Whitby who died in 2011.' -John Tavener

This work written for AAB soli SATB chorus and orchestra was first performed at the thanksgiving for the Treaty of Utrecht held in St Paul's Cathedral London on 7th July 1713. Together with Te Deum it was quickly established in standard use on such occasions as the Festivals of the Sons of the Clergy.This vocal score edited by Watkins Shaw includes an organ arrangement of Handel's instrumental score.

Leighton's setting of the Morning Canticles was commissioned in 1967 for the centenary service of the Monkton Combe School in Bath. The Venite like all three movements of the setting is scored for Unison Voices SATB Choir and Organ.Kenneth Leighton (1929-1988) was a Yorkshireman and one of the most distinguished post-war composers in Britain. While he is best known for his choral works he also wrote 3 symphonies for orchestra and being a fine pianist himself also wrote regularly for the Piano. His works are often characterised by a warmth and sympathy for the ensemble he is writing for.
