Music of profound beauty from one of the greatest vocal music composers of the past 100 years set to text by T.S. Eliot. This is one of Britten's five canticles and was first performed at The Maltings Snape on 26th June 1971.

This work for SATB (divisi) Choir and Organ was commissioned by the Birmingham bach Sociey with funds made available by West Midlands Arts. This work is essentially in ternary form although nearly all the melodic material isdrawn from the opening section. The two outer sections are settings of Latin texts the first being a Benediction of the Cross and the second a Prayer. In the middle section the words of the text (attributed to Robert Fayrfax(1470-1527)) have been slightly altered.

Commissioned for Tenebrae and their director Nigel Short. John Tavener writes:'Mother and Child celebrates the miracle of childbirth. It also celebrates Mary in her universal aspect as mother of all Prophets andco-redemptress with Christ. But behind all this is the Theophanic Light single and infinite and the same in every Religious tradition. The music is at once tender ecstatic and luminous and follows the text. I have interpolatedinto Brian Keeble’s poem texts celebrating the Eternal feminine in Greek and then at the climax an outburst in Sanskrit of ATMA. This is supreme Reality the true Self shining and infinite the one single God expressedin music by pulsating awesome strokes on the Hindu Temple Gong with organ and choir in massive blocks. This seems to say that the real ‘Mother and Child’ are both beyond birth and beyond death and beyond time.'

Of the 11 surviving settings of the Mass by Charpentier the present work the Messe de minuit is without doubt one of the most popular. Although Charpentier's Parisian career is quite well documented little is known about the genesis and first performance of the Messe de minuit. It is likely however that it was commissioned by the Jesuits of the church of Saint-Louis (today Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis) for whom Charpentier had been working as maître de musique since 1687. The Messe de minuit belongs to the tradition of the parody-mass for which Charpentier adapted 10 noëls - whose titles are given in the autograph MS - to the text of the ordinary and theresulting music is fresh charming and jubilant.

Herbert Howells composed his Magnificat And Nunc Dimittis evening canticles for St Paul's Cathedral in 1951 going on to become among his most famous and enduring works. These beautiful canticles were composed by a master of setting the Anglican liturgy and are arranged for SATB Chorus and Organ Accompaniment.  These two wonderful works of choral music are characterised by a unique blend of unison harmonies and disparate melodies that highlight each voice perfectly. The lingering notes crescendos and subtle dynamic changes were composed with the acoustics of that great cathedral in mind but they also workequally well in any setting.
