Aztec Dances was commissioned by Christopher Orton with the assistance of the BBC Performing Arts Fund. Sacrificial Dance Composer's Note The idea for the genesis of thiswork and indeed its title and individual movements came after visiting an exhibition at the British Museum entitled Moctezuma ?Aztec Ruler. The exhibition traced the events following the election in 1502 of Moctezuma as Supreme Ruler of the Aztecs and the subsequent invasion of 1519 by a Spanish expedition led by Hermán Cortés ? an event that was to eventually lead to the demise of the Aztec civilisation.Part of the exhibition explored the role that music and dance played in Aztec life. The primitive recorder together with trumpets and drums were used as an important part of the formal ritual ceremonies (including rather gruesomely human sacrifice) that took place to appease the many Gods which the Aztecs worshipped as well as for other more informal occasions in their social and cultural life.I have tried to reflect some of these highly contrasting and dramatic ideas in this four movement work.        Edward Gregson

Initially composed in 1907 for Bass Voice and Piano Habanera by Maurice Ravel was transcribed for Flute and Piano for this edition. Based on a Cuban Contradanza it features a special habanera rhythm and is generally performed with sung lyrics. In this edition the Flute is a substitute for the voice. While composing this piece Maurice Ravel was also working on two works also with Spanish influence: 'The Spanish Rhapsody' and 'The Spanish Hour'. Having won many prizes at the Paris Conservatoire during the 1920s-1930s Eugène Bozza went on to conduct the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and to become Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes. As a major figure on the classical music frontline Bozza's compositions were well-received by audiences  Soir Dans Les Montagnes for Flute and Piano being no exception. This Bozza piece for Flute is characteristically French with lyrical and graceful melodies displays of the beautiful lower register of the Flute and fast flourishing semiquaver passages accompanied by spread chords andstaccato in the Piano. As music educationalist Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions 'his works reveal melodic fluency elegance of structure and a consistenly sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.'

Aria written in 1930 by Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) is a small study initially for Voice and Piano but arranged in this edition for Flute and Piano. This version and the one for Alto Saxophone and Piano are the ones the most commonly used. The Flute score is one-page long and contains technical difficulties that would make it ideal for an upper intermediate player. Its author Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) is a neoclassical composer who won the Prix de Rome in 1919. He composed many symphonic suites operas and seven orchestras including 'Angelique' (1926) and 'Entertainment' (1930). He also was in charge ofthe Accadémie de France in the Villa Médicis (Roma) and was later administrator for the Paris Opera.
