for Violoncello and Piano-Cesar Franck?s Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the Violin repertoire a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe.Franck?s friend the cellist Jules Desart was so impressed when he heard the Violin Sonata performed at the Société nationale de musique in Paris that he adapted the work for his instrument. This arrangement was first published in 1887 by inserting the Cello part into the Piano score of the original edition. For this purpose thePiano score had received a new cover and the publisher had expanded the title of the composition to ?Sonate pour Piano et Violon ou Violoncelle?. This version by the cellist Jules Delsart for Piano and Violoncello is the only arrangement of the work authorized by the composer and its first edition represents the main source for Bärenreiter?s new scholarly-critical publication.This Barenreiter edition also includes a separate movement ?Mélancolie? first published after Franck?s death in 1911 again for the same instrumentation Piano and Violin or Violoncello. Twelve fine Sonatas by the Italian virtuoso.-Throughout his 30-year career as principal flautist of the opera orchestra of La Scala Milan Rabboni came in close contact with opera repertoire and singers of the time and thereby gained a priviliged insight into the belcanto style. It is clear that Rabboni composed his Sonatas to explore different sonorities and phrasings as well as to establish a better overall technique for the flute. Although at first they appear to bestraightforward these sonatas encourage the flautist to look beyond merely playing the notes and to strive towards creating shapes and lines within the music an approach which is often disregarded in favour of developingtechnique.

However it has not been possible to locate any copy of this publication. That the Flute version of Franck’s Sonata has found a permanent place in the chamber musicrepertoire is primarily the achievement of Jean-Pierre Rampal who frequently performed his own arrangement of the work.There were no idiomatic Violin techniques to overcome and the cantabile solo part with its broadly arched melodies seems perfectly natural on a wind instrument. The present Flute arrangement largely adopts the original Violin part unchanged merely transposing those passages that go beneath the Flute’s range. In such cases the change of register begins early enough to avoid disruptions to the melodic line and the musical context. The balance between the solo instrument and the (unaltered) Piano accompaniment remains intact.The edition is rounded off by an informative text on the genesis and reception history of the sonata (Ger/Fr/Eng).

Created in 1943 as part of the four exam pieces for the Paris Conservatoire this charming Sonatine for Flute and Piano is part of the early works of Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) a French Composer following the paths of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy. Even though the composer was later quite critical about it this Sonatine which lasts 9 minutes is the most recorded of his compositions and has become a standard in the flute repertoire. Composed of three movements it begins with a tempo “Allegretto” followed by a part more “Andante” and finishes with a cadence “Animé”. Henri Dutilleux was internationally acclaimed for his work winning prizes such as the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers among many others. His work also includes sonatas for piano and for oboe two symphonies the cello concerto Tout un monde lointain (A whole distant world) the violin concerto L'arbre des songes (The tree of dreams) and the string quartet Ainsi la nuit (Thus the night).
