Composées entre 1915 et 1917, juste avant la révolution russe qui contraignit Prokofiev à quitter son pays en 1918, les 20 pièces des Visions fugitives virent le jour non pas d’une seule traite, mais par salves. Le journal intime du compositeur nous apprend qu’au moins une partie d’entre elles est inspirée par des sujets extra-musicaux. Ainsi, certains morceaux évoquent-ils des personnes de son entourage tandis que d’autres reflètent ses émotions face à la situation politique et la menace de barbarie sous-jacente. Selon ses propres dires, le n° 19, par exemple, est «inspiré par les événements de février 1917 à Petrograd», première phase de la révolution. Relativement peu exigeantes sur le plan technique, ces pièces sont volontiers employées dans le cadre pédagogique. Elles sont désormais publiées pour la première fois dans une édition Urtext tenant compte de toutes les sources musicales établies du vivant du compositeur.
