Piano

Wiener Urtext Edition presents a hitherto unknown and unpublished piano piece by...(+)
Wiener Urtext Edition presents a hitherto unknown and unpublished piano piece by Beethoven, which was found in 2020 during research at the Vienna City Library (Wienbibliothek im Rathaus). The work is notated on a double sheet with sketches by Ludwig van Beethoven from 1790–1792. It is untitled and does not begin at the beginning, but only at the end of a line, immediately following a previous sketch. As a hitherto unknown piece, it does not yet appear in the new catalogue of works and bears neither opus number nor WoO number. The 16-bar piece shows the musical character of a Ländler (18th century European folk dance). Beethoven notated the complete melody voice of his piece, even reworking it in a few places, but the accompaniment is written in abbreviated form. The piece is published as first edition in Wiener Urtext and is also available in the anthology containing the complete Piano Pieces by Beethoven, UT 50295. / Partitions classique / Piano - instruments à clavier / Piano / WIENER URTEXT EDITION

With the new Urtext Primo series, the Wiener Urtext Edition wants to close the gap arising at the point of transition to additional lessons after having studied a piano method. Beginning with a performance level which is outlined by pieces such as Bach's Minuet in G (BWV Anh. 116), Mozart's Minuet in F (KV 5) or Schumann's Wilder Reiter (Op. 68/8), works by three different composers are selected for each volume of the Urtext Primo series, with the aim of offering piano pupils (or even adults who want to resume piano playing) a wide range of repertoire pieces on the basis of which they can enhance their technical and musical skills. The pieces' range of levels of difficulty is relatively narrow so that the volume can be used continuously over a period of about two years. This is what distinguishes the Urtext Primo approach from almost all common anthologies. The selected repertoire takes into account not only pieces of the classic canon of lessons, but also lesser known works which are in no way of less importance for piano lessons. The Urtext Primo volumes are published in the internationally recognised standard of the Wiener Urtext editions. The explanations included in each volume shall help to deepen the knowledge of musical styles, music history and piano playing. A repertoire chart at the end of each volume gives a rough overview of the levels of difficulty of the selected pieces.Volume 4 combines works of the German Romanticism by Schumann, Brahms and Theodor Kirchner. Apart from well known pieces from Schumann's 'Album for the Youth' and the easiest waltzes from opus 39 (in the easier version) by Brahms, the selection contains the attractive set of variations from Schumann's first Youth Sonata Op. 118/1 and Brahms' Saraband in A minor WoO 5/1 as well as a number of pleasant pieces by Theodor Kirchner which continue the tonal air of Schumann and Brahms in easy playable pieces. / Piano

Wiener Urtext-Franck's Sonata is one of the most famous works in the chamber music repertoire. This new Wiener Urtext Edition is based on the first edition with Franck's final corrections. Inconsistencies between the Piano score and the solo part are due to annotations by the violinist Eugène Ysaÿe the dedicatee who was given the work as a wedding present. This version likely to have been authorized by Franck is published for the first time in an Urtext edition. Günther Ludwig in his preface suggests a carefully considered cerebral approach to this highlight of the repertoire.

For more than 200 years Mozart?s piano sonatas have been part of every pianist?s repertoire. Research done over the last few decades has made it possible, however, to establish more accurate dating and ordering of these works. Expert examination of original documents has shown that many printed editions from the eighteenth Century give more reliable detail than Mozart?s own written scores; many of these works were prepared for publication by the composer himself and marked with precise indications for performance with regard to ornamentation, dynamics and articulation. All this, together with the rediscovery of documents that only became accessible again at the end of the 20th Century, gives reason enough to justify the publication of a new Wiener Urtext edition of Mozart?s Piano Sonatas. To follow the second volume, published in the spring of 2003 with Sonatas K 330 to K 576, we now present the first volume, which contains the Sonatas K 279 to K 311. For Sonata K 284, variation XI in the final movement is given both in the version that appears in the original manuscript and in the version used in the first edition; in order to make the music easier to read, both versions are given in normal print size. Music that is clear and well laid out, with page turns in convenient places, makes this edition extremely user-friendly. Advice on performance by the renowned Mozart specialist Robert D. Levin provides fresh stimulus for what can otherwise too often become a rather tired interpretation. / Partitions classique / Piano - instruments à clavier / Piano / WIENER URTEXT EDITION

Sonata Op. 17: Mixed
Duet: Instrumental Work Wiener Urtext

Violoncello and Piano-Originally Beethoven wrote Sonata Op. 17 for Horn and Piano. This composition was intended for the famous Horn virtuoso Johann Wenzel Stich who called himself Giovanni Punto. Punto had greatly expanded the playing techniques on the natural Horn. Accordingly Beethoven tailored the solo part completely to the unique playing skills of this virtuoso musician. Punto performed the work several times; to other hornists however it remained unaccessible at that time because of its difficulties. That probably was the reason why this work was published in a version for Horn or Violoncello one year after the world premiere already. It isdeemed to be fairly certain that this arrangement goes back to Beethoven himself. Carl Czerny already ranked this sonata among Beethoven's original Cello sonatas and listed it chronologically as No. 3. Like the 1801 edition of the Viennese publisher Tranquillo Mollo the Wiener Urtext Edition publishes the sonata for Horn or Violoncello and Piano. Whereas the Horn sonata was very difficult to play at the time of creation the arrangement for Violoncello curiously enough is one of the easiest among Beethoven's Cello sonatas. For this reason the composition is increasingly popular among cellists as an accessible approach to Beethoven's oeuvre for violoncello and piano. Consequently the work is now available in the Wiener Urtext Edition series as separate edition as well.

Maurice Ravel's Gaspard De La Nuit is one of the most important Piano works of the 20th century and constitutes the height of the extension of the pianistic playing techniques and tonal possibilites which was already begun by Chopin and Liszt in the 19th century. The three movements Ondine Le Gibet and Scarbo are based on poems by Aloysius Bertrand which Ravel put in front of each of the three pieces. Thus too the work is in a tradition represented by composers such as Schumann and Liszt in the 19th century that combines instrumental music with literary models. For the new edition published by the Wiener Urtext Edition the editorsconsulted not only the first edition used almost exclusively up to now but also Ravel's autograph as well as his personal copy of the first edition on the basis of which numerous passages in the musical text could be corrected and brought closer to Ravel's original intention. In addition the editors included corrections from personal copies of various students of Ravel. Entries of the composer going well beyond mere text corrections and practical performance tips handed down by his students are analysed in the Notes of Interpretation. The reader-friendly large-format Wiener Urtext edition is completed by a trilingual glossary of the French performance instructions used by Ravel as well as English and German translations of Bertrand's three poems.

For more than 200 years Mozart’s Piano Sonatas have been part of every pianist’s repertoire. Research done over the last few decades has made it possible however to establish more accurate dating and ordering of these works. Expert examination of original documents has shown that many printed editions from the eighteenth century give more reliable detail than Mozart’s own written scores; many of these works were prepared for publication by the composer himself and marked with precise indications for performance with regard to ornamentation dynamics and articulation. All this together with the rediscovery of documents that only becameaccessible again at the end of the 20th century gives reason enough to justify the publication of a new Wiener Urtext edition of Mozart’s Piano Sonatas. To follow the second volume published in the spring of 2003 with Sonatas K 330 to K 576 Wiener Urtext now present the first volume which contains the Sonatas K 279 to K 311. For Sonata K 284 variation XI in the final movement is given both in the version that appears in the original manuscript and in the version used in the first edition; in order to make the music easier to read both versions are given in normal print size. Music that is clear and well laid out with page turns in convenient places makes this edition extremely user-friendly.Advice on performance by the renowned Mozart specialist Robert D. Levin provides fresh stimulus for what can otherwise too often become a rather tired interpretation.
