Johannis Cantabrigiense-Nico Muhly's Third Service (Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis)...(+)
Johannis Cantabrigiense-Nico Muhly's Third Service (Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis) is a work for SATB Choir and Organ Accompaniment. Commissioned by the Master and Fellows of St John's College Cambridge it was first performed by St John's College Choir on 29th May 2016. A full performance lasts around 7.5 minutes. 'The American composer Nico Muhly has often spoken of his love of the early English church music which he sang as a choirboy and his recent choral works include a Third Service composed for St John's College Cambridge. (Given his love of music by Thomas Weelkes we can perhaps hope for at least six more.) This setting though has nothing to do with the early English repertoire and is in a bold modern idiom more akin to Tippett's famous setting for St. John's. The Organ plays a varied and independent role throughout sometimes with dynamics that are quite different to those in the voice parts. The Organ part is sometimes written on two staves without further comment and it's not entirely clear what is required between pages 3 and 4 where three staves become two. The vocal parts include some modest vocal effects and there are Soprano and Alto solos in the Nunc dmittis. The Gloria of the Nunc is a varied repeat of the Magnificat Gloria together with a subtly reworked conclusion to match the general mood of the movement. - Geoffrey Webber Choir & Organ Magazine

For Nine Male Voices And Orchestra-Luminous Body is a collaboration between Nico Muhly and Craig Lucas written in the period immediately following their narratively charged opera 'Two Boys'. Luminous Body is as a result abstract and poetic in gesture and form. The text interpolates among other things stylized versions of the teachings of Christ Buddha Mohammed and Plato; these are scrambled and re-contextualized and in a sense serve as background for the textures of the combination of nine male Voices and Orchestra.Part 1 introduces the chord structure that governs the entire piece and ends with the repeated words ?only your will is your own.?The second and third parts loosely dealing with the Devil and the importance of choosing one?s words are based on drones generated by the Voices and the strings; the constant (but slightly morphing) texture is meant to be meditative and vague. Muhly always wanted to set the Beatitudes and Craig paraphrased them beautifully here; the tenors intone the word ?blessed? over and over while the strings and winds reiterate the passacaglia from the opening of the piece. The fifth and final part is a series of proverbs. The Orchestra begins in a series of loose ecstatic drones which increase in intensity (?Make your own family!?) until you jump suddenly to the garden of Gethsemane where Christ was betrayed while his disciples slept. ?Why are you sleeping? Couldn?t you stay awake for one more hour?? he asks while the strings and winds lazily chant in the background.Luminous Body was premiered by The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and Cantus.

This exclusive collection brings together 12 of Nico Muhly?s sacred works for mixed-voice choir. These vivacious fresh and dramatic pieces will make an impact whether in the church or in the concert hall and range from the intimate Lord keep us modest when we claim to the effervescent Bright Star Carol alongside service music such as Muhly?s Third Service. All are accessible to learn and offer choirs a new slant on contemporary choral music at its very best. 'Choral music has always been at the emotional core of my musical output. Even when I?m writing large-scale orchestral works (or indeed chamber music) I alwaysfind myself returning to techniques and textures I?ve greedily stolen from centuries of music from Tye to Howells early and recent. I try to design my own choral music primarily for use in worship where the measure of the success of the piece is if it helps guide the listeners? ears upwards and elsewhere as sacred architecture and the various rituals of the church themselves are meant to do. The specificity of music heard only in certain seasons is for me an important and thrilling element of the choral tradition: a Beethoven Symphony is welcome at any point in the year but an anthem for Candlemas works only then at a certain time of day and on a certain day of the year. With this functional spirit at the heart of the compositional process I hope that the music collected here makes equal sense in a concert setting. These works range from ordinaries of the mass to hymns to motets and represent a decade and a half of output.' - Nico Muhly

Radiant Music was written for flautist Alice K. Dade at her request for a short recital piece. The CD part is made up of several episodes of shimmering music for flutes dulcimers organs and sampled baroque strings trumpet and choir. This piece attempts to obsess over a repeated sequence of chords – this progression appears in the opening bars of the piece. This sequence reappears in each episode as a harmonic goal for the flute whose part circumnavigates it but never hits it exactly. Also at play in Radiant Music is a notion of fast music that moves slowly versus slow music that moves quickly. This is most evident in the Throbbing musicwhich is very fast but has an immensely slow harmonic motion and in the conclusion which is made of one chord reworked over a long stretch of time. Radiant Music is dedicated to Alice K. Dade with thanks to Alex Sopp who edited the part in 2007. Download the pre-recorded element HERE . Written for cello harp and celeste.Clear Music (after John Taverner) was written at the request of the cellist Wendy Law during the summer of 2002. Clear Music is an extended exploration of a single measure in John Taverner’s (1490 1545) motet Mater Christi Sanctissima. What I attempted to do in Clear Music was to suspend this measure for as long as I could imagine in a single texture: the bright clarity of the celeste and harp. As in the Taverner I have structured Clear Music into a series of peaks featuring the highest registers of the treble voice—here the cello. I remember very vividly performing this piece and being struck by how distant the treble was fromthe other voices - sometimes there are spaces of over an octave between the treble and the alto - and I attempted to recreate the somewhat terrifying and exposed contours of these lines. The end result is I hope a prolonged and transparent recollection of the Taverner which exposes not only my appreciation for the music itself but also my response to performing it.Nico Muhly.

The sheet music for Nico Muhly's Doublespeak arranged for Chamber Ensemble and composed for the orchestral sextet 'eighth blackbird'. The piece is arranged for Flute (Soprano Recorder) Clarinet in B flat Percussion (Castanets Tenor Drum Pedal Bass Drum) Glockenspiel Piano Violin and Cello. It works for 2-6 players and this item includes the full score as well as the parts. Doublespeak had its debut at the Edlis Neeson Theatre in Chicago performed by the new musical six-piece 'eighth blackbird'. The piece is a slow and repetitive one punctuated bymoments of stark beauty. It is according to Muhly something of a tribute to the great Philip Glass the forefather of minimalist classical music. It takes implicit inspiration from his entire oeuvre but also explicitly incorporates portions of his most famous and valued works interweaving them inside a new composition that captures what 'eighth blackbird' do best. The Doublespeak sheet music would be ideal for Chamber Ensembles looking to perform or practise minimalist music drawn from the 1960s and 1970s. If you love Philip Glass or Nico Muhly or both this composition is a real treat.

I knew I wanted to write a duet a piece of religious music and something to go along with a bit of Birtwistle. My initial instinct was to base the piece on drones as Birtwistle's music has so very many notes but then I decided that an austere but ecstatic approach was the best to fill a coherent evening. I asked my friend Craig Lucas to paraphrase the Stabat Mater text - which describes the Virgin Mary weeping at the foot of the cross on which her son is crucified. The piece is organised byseparating each phrase of the text with a moment of silence with the exception of the last three which are joined with a frenzied chorale with improvised dynamics from the Harp Wind and Strings. - Nico Muhly Instrumentation: Soprano and Baritone voice Flute Clarinet in Bb Harp Violin Viola and Violoncello.

The sheet music for contemporary virtuoso composer Nico Muhly's So Many Things arranged for Mezzo-Soprano and Piano Accompaniment. So Many Things was commissioned by a number of institutions including The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association UC Berkeley and Carnegie Hall. Lasting around 15 minutes Muhly has set three poems to this wonderful music including a lengthy narrative poem by Joyce Carol Oates and two translations of C.F. Cavafy by Daniel Mendelsohn. Muhly has brilliantly managed to take the emotion of the words and replicate them through music creating an astonishingly movingaccompaniment that not only reflects the lyrical sentiment but complements it. He states that the Piano moves between skittish and ostinato relentless but often pausing for an effective break in the musical narrative. With drones and palindromes from the Piano the Voice leaps between intervals creating a dynamism that creates uncertainty rather than resolve much like the poetry.

Nico Muhly's It Remains To Be Seen was written in 2006 for for full Orchestra and has a duration of approximately 11 minutes. Composers Note: It Remains to be Seen was written for the Boston University Tanglewood Institute’s 40th Anniversary Gala in July 2006. The piece begins with a chord identical to the one at the end of Stravinsky’s Firebird suite and proceeds into a series of charged nocturnal episodes. I wanted to treat the feeling of having just heard music and being expected to make one’s own – referencing the experience of leaving a BSO concert at the shed walking back to BUTI on a curvy back road arguing about music in pairs and threes and at the sign of bright headlights from behind reorganizing in single file as a car filled with happy concert-goers speeds by. The piece is a nine-minute navigation of an excited occasionally illuminated dark road filled with arguing cars fragments of remembered music and a constant propulsive pulse. Nico Muhly

This Drones Variations Ornaments sheet music is the full score for this innovative and dramatic piece by Nico Muhly. According to Muhly this piece is 'music in constant transformation' featuring steadily evolving melodies from a number of instruments punctuated with hugely original percussive parts with instructions to fill the Cymbal with chain coins and other metal objects in order to make it sound like glass shattering. It is this inspired composition that makes Drones Variations Ornaments the interesting and acclaimed piece that it is.With this piece Muhly has attempted torecreate the sound and motion of a machine through music. String chords begin the piece with a light and soothing opening before the 'machine' (made up of Winds Guitar Percussion and Piano) awakens. This truly unusual piece is a joy to listen to and perform and we are pleased to offer this full score to you.

Nico Muhly's Marrow composed for SATB choir unaccompanied with texts from Psalm 63 vv.1–3 6–8 Book of Common Prayer (1662). Commissioned by the Netherlands Chamber Choir for the project 150 Psalms to be premiered by the Tallis Scholars during Utrecht Early Music Festival September 1st 2017. Duration: c. 3 minutes. 'Last September in one weekend in Utrecht settings were sung of all 150 Psalms by 150 different composers covering 1000 years of choral music. The Tallis Scholars were one of the four choirs taking part and among their contributions was this new piece by Nico Muhly. The words are from the Book ofCommon Prayer version of Psalm 63 with the title teasingly taking one word from ‘My soul shall be satisfied even as it were with marrow and fatness.’ Cries of ‘O God’ provide a fluid background to an almost plainchant-like proclamation of the text at start and finish with other voices gradually joining the psalm text in the central section until all unite on ‘when my mouth praiseth thee with joyful lips’. For a choir happy to subdivide into 4S 2A 2T and 2B it is a setting of imagination and beauty.' - Sunday by Sunday

In the composer’s own words ‘Keep in Touch is a lament a sort of chaconne divided up into sections by more freely-composed cadenzas for the Viola.’ The electronic CD supplied with the sheet music includes bluesy singing from Antony Hegarty among other sounds and Muhly clearly relishes the ‘inbetweenness’ of the singing and the falsetto of the Viola. Muhly’s music in this piece plays freely with time and key in a postmodernist way making the ultimate solitude of the Viola touching. I feel like I spend half of my life trying to trick string players to play like Fretwork and vocalists to singlike the Hilliard Ensemble so it was with enormous pleasure that I composed this piece. The text isderived from Psalm 39 which Gibbons himself set as well as an account of Gibbons's own autopsy which is a poignant 17th century semi-anonymous text. One of the most thrilling things about the sound of five violas da gamba playing together is the sense of their phrasing being derived from vocal music but made somehow electric and ecstatic through ornamentation and the friction of the strings. The piece has an idée fixe based on a minor scale with two possible resolutions and many ornaments. In between iterations the voices in rhythmic unison intone the psalm. It isn't until the autopsy text arrives that the voices begin to split into more elaborate ?Gibbonsy? verses and responses. A series of semiimprovisedfragments on the text 'Take thy plague away from me' introduces the third section of the piece where plucked strings create a halo around the text 'hear my prayer OLord.' The piece ends with the ornaments wildly exploded over the voices singing two words endlessly repeated.' - Nico Muhly

Three Études for Piano by Nico Muhly. “In preparation for writing a large (uncompleted) work for piano I decided to write three short pieces to get certain musical tics out of my system. Each of these three études addresses a specific rhythmic and harmonic gesture: the first Ostinati focuses on a gently lilting left hand contrasted with angular outbursts in the right hand usually in octaves. The second étude “Quiet Music ” concerns itself with drones and chant-like music and the third “Running ” explores slowly shifting harmonies pitted against very fast cross-hand playing.” –Nico Muhly 2003 These three études were written from January to March 2003 and were composed partially for performance in the VisionIntoArt/RockHotelPianoFest in New York City. Étude #3 (“Running”) was premiered by Eric Huebner and is dedicated to him.
