Two beautiful pieces of Irish influence. Recorded by Gary Ryan on his CD 'Visions and Vistas'.The composer writes:'Out of Clonmel' - Over the past few years I have explored different tunings on the guitar. The instrument sounds fresh with a new tuning and harmonies or patterns that have become stale or are difficult to play with the traditional tuning can suddenly become reinvigorated idiomatic and resonant in different ways. You are also forced as a player to explore the fingerboard differently and the different tension of the strings produces a subtly different timbre.Out of Clonmel is tuned so that all of the open strings form a D major chord (D A D F# A D). This can be confusing at first but you get used to it pretty quickly and tablature helps when notating the score. Both of these pieces were originally commissioned by Rebecca Baulch a very fine player who I used to teach at the Royal College of Music. She was very good at reading tablature hence the idea to retune the guitar.Clonmel was the place my grandfather came from in Co. Tipperary Ireland and the piece has an energetic Irish flavour which reflects Irish folk music something I have always loved. The melody is decorated with ornaments which imitate those often played on the pipe or whistle. I dedicated this piece to my second daughter Caitlin so full of life who has of course in part come out of Clonmel.'Lough Caragh (Glenbeigh)' - Lough Caragh is influenced by the traditional Irish ballad and expresses for me something of the incredible beauty of the South West of Ireland. When my eldest daughter Jenny was only one year old in the summer of 2004 we stayed on the shores of Lough Caragh a beautifully tranquil lake west of Killarney visiting Glenbeigh where Jenny first played in the sea. I was trying to convey through the music the memory of those early magical childhood days which can never be recaptured. I had the melody going round in my head for a very long time before writing it down. When I compose I like to think that if what I have written is good I will remember it several weeks or months later in my head. My aural memory therefore acts as a filter retaining the best ideas before I put pen to paper. Lough Caragh uses a

Through the Seasons was written out of necessity to provide simple playable and hopefully enjoyable music for four guitars. The parts can be doubled or tripled. The pieces make useful guitar ensemble and concert music and indeed have been used as such to great effect. The four movements follow the path of the seasons and are sutiable for players of around Grade One standard and upwards.Grade: upto 1

Intensely romantic in style this is one of the great song cycles of recent times.Gary Carpenter is one of the most admired and respected living composers in the UK. He is Visiting Professor In Composition at the Royal Northern College of Music (Manchester) and a professor of composition at the Royal Academy of Music (London).

This quartet was written in the spring of 1995 and reflects something of my interest in Celtic poetry. While not overtly programmatic an echo of the powerful nostalgia that is such a potent characteristic of Celtic verse may be detected in the music.

Stunning jazz-influenced work for solo Soprano Saxophone. Coltrane was written in 1981 and is a musical tribute to John Coltrane. The first half is blues-based while the second half is rhythmically and harmonically influenced by North Indian music.

'Moroccan Fantasy was originally two pieces I wrote in the 1980s Shiraz and Gentle Dreams. Then in 1999 'star pupil' saxophonist Simon Haram wanted a new piece so I wrote Moroccan Fantasy based on the earlier pieces extending the harmonies of Gentle Dreams and giving Shiraz more of a Reggae feel. Young Scottish saxophonist Rowan Hawitt then heard Simon's recording and wanted me to make a Piano and Sax reduction so here is Moroccan Fantasy in various arrangements for solo wind instrument and Piano. All the pedal dynamic and tempo markings are suggestions only. All my music can be played inmany different ways-the main thing is to make it your own and express yourself.' - David Heath

Return To Avalon is scored for two flutes one doubling Piccolo the other doubling Alto Flute.In the mid-thirteenth century over 200 000 Cathars were murdered in the South of France 'Avalon' by forces of darkness and ignorance. The Cathars were European Buddhists who believed in loving each other that we are all equal in the eyes of God non-revenge vegetarianism and that women could be priests. They also believed in reincarnation.In answer to threats and bullying many of them chose to be burnt alive rather than be forced to follow teachings they believed to be untrue.People say that the Cathars never came back. People saythat they died in vain. But I believe that they are wrong I believe that the Cathars did come back to create a Church of light outside the constricts of religion but through the arts through music poetry and prose.'Return to Avalon' is the story of two great Cathar flute players who rise from the ashes of the Montsegur massacre to return and baptize the world into the truth of the eternal through the beauty of sound and honesty of expression. I imagined these 'Sons of the light ' playing this piece and letting its message of friendship and brotherhood echo out over the mountains.'Return to Avalon' begins with 'The Last Song' a 13th century Cathar melody echoed on alto flute then explores an idea I first used in my 1993 flute concerto the idea of orchestrated digital delay.The second movement 'Human flame' on piccolo and alto is also based on a medieval theme but takes it further and further out until finally it burns up into a huge fireball.In the third movement 'Sons of the light return to Avalon' the two flutes reappear Phoenix-like from the ashes leading and learning from each other. Eventually the flutes become inseparable as they interweave together at speed leading us to a higher truth that we are all brothers and sisters equally loved by God.Phenomenal flautist Samuel

The King's Pipe still exists in the town of Falmouth Cornwall where it was used to burn seized goods (such as tobacco) from smugglers. The idea for this piece was given to Lee Sollory by Peter Bone who does much to inspire the young guitarists of Cornwall and who also commissioned the work on behalf of the Cornish Music Service.Grade: 1 - 2

Oboe and Piano-'The Sapphire' is dedicated to Heath's daughter Naima Sapphire. On the day she was born in 2000 Heath was walking over the meadows in Edinburgh to see her and could hear bagpipes playing in the distance. That inspired him to write this piece.The melody and over-all style are influenced by Scottish traditional music however the harmonies come from modern jazz.

All of the music in the Real Guitar Book is suitable for both classical and plectrum style techniques. Grade: 2-4
