Platinum Spirals was commissioned in 1976 by the American National Endowment for the Arts and dedicated to the composer?s father who was a geologist and mining engineer. It explores the malleability and flexibility of the metal stretching the melodic lines into spirals. Scored for solo Violin. Joan Tower (b. 1938) is a contemporary American composer pianist and conductor. She has become renowned for her bold and spirited compositions. The New Yorker has described her as ?one of the most successful woman composers of all time? and she is still in demand for commissions today.

This is one of Martinu's most dramatic and darkest duo works. This is not surprising; the sonata dates from 1944 when Martinu had exiled himself to the United States and Europe was still struggling amid the turbulence of WorldWar II.

The French composer Darius Milhaud wrote prolifically and skilfully. In addition to having been a member of the French avant-garde group 'Les Six' he absorbed jazz influences after spending some time in America and managedto combine the two into his distinctive signature style. This Concerto for Cello No.2 was written in 1945 and is longer than its 1934 predecessor having an approximate duration of 20 minutes.

Originally scored for eight Cellos this eight-minute work is dedicated to the memory of the composer's parents. In his words: the piece reflects their fondness for lyrical music and is lightly coloured by the influence of jazzharmonies touched on beneath the Cello's arching elegiac lines.
