Conductor's scoreThis work consists of two segued movements. The first movement is a set of continuous variations based on a long, unbroken melody that is initially stated by the clarinet. The second movement is a lively, fast, perpetual motion. The work takes its inspiration from the classical Sinfonietta Concertante—meaning a small (and probably rather light) symphony that features interplay between the instruments and is set in a concentrated form.1111; 1100; perc; stgs Duration: 10' Composed: 2006 Published by: Hutter Music Performance materials available on rental only:.

As a composer, Joseph Bologne was quite prolific, composing six operas, fourteen violin concertos, four symphonies concertantes, and numerous chamber works and songs. His Six String Quartets, Op. 1, Nos. 1-6 date from 1770-1771 and are dedicated to Anne Louis Alexandre de Montmorency (1724-1812), 7th Prince of Robeck and Grand Duke of Spain. All of his quartets feature a prominent first violin part and the Opus 1 quartets all display a similarity to the Italian opera overtures from earlier in the century in A-B-A form with the ‘A’ sections being robust allegros and all ‘B’ sections marked rondo. This lively Rondeau from Bologne's Six String Quartets, Op. 1 is a classic seven-part rondo with an ABACAB’A formula. The ‘A’ sections are set in G Major, ‘B’ in D Major, and ‘C’ in G Minor. As was typical of the Classical style, the primary melody is heard mainly in first violin, while other sections provide supporting harmonic and rhythmic roles. The essence of the string quartet scoring is retained by having the bass double the cello part. This makes more of this significant composer’s music accessible to school ensembles, resulting in a charming concert selection appropriate for concert or festival.

More than my earlier works, this one is interspersed with metrically bound rhythms and musicianly characters that constantly recrystallize and drift towards or away from familiar situations. The familiar: These are dance-like figures and music-making formulas, but also songs and, in two cases fragments of Bach's music - playfully collected memories of impressions in which - consciously and unconsciously - I am embodied with that collective comfort in whose protection bourgeois thinking and feeling, magically protected, grow up and emerge apart.(It is well known that such security has its fetishes from the childlike to the adult stage: Home, religious bond, holidays, tradition, longing for childhood - the superficiality may have little idea of the depth that opens up underneath. There is also no question that we are still marked by such security even when the contradictions and alienation of existence force us to step out of their protection, to recognize and act upon reality, and to oppose the domination of such inner bonds where their original truth has become the fatal untruth of comfortable illusion, stubbornly and fearfully conjured idyll and reactionary narrow-mindedness.My music feeds on figures in which such memories are encapsulated. It deals with them not much differently than in other pieces with the elements of the traditional musical concept of material, having already always reflected compositionally as a product of sociality and anticipation of musical expression, i.e. it moved into a structurally expanded context and expressively redefined from there.Such an approach aims at overcoming lack of freedom: grasping as part of conceiving, i.e. not philosophical reflection, but rather an artistically gripping reflex by intervening in the physical immediacy of such predetermined elements. These penetrate and infect the structural events, inducing a musicianship that cannot be relied upon; the music jumps onto rhythms like onto moving vehicles, allows for being carried by them until they deform or disintegrate. This creates an incline of rhythmically shaped situations: sequence and interweaving of dances and structures. The role of the solo string quartet is versatile, obbligato and concertante, leading and accompanying in a changing sense. Set as a chamber music apparatus in an orchestral landscape, it repeatedly forces its own sound dimensions onto the orchestra, it must accept being drowned out at times, it nests in the holes of tutti fields, it acts as a louse in the fur, forcing one to listen in and out.The Tanzsuite with Deutschlandlied is structured as follows:I. Section. 1. Introduction - 2. Waltz - 3. March - 4. Bridge -II. Section. 5. Siciliano - 6. Capriccio - 7. Valse lente -III. Section. 8. Bridge - 9. Gigue - 10. Tarantelle - 11. Bridge -IV. Petr Iljitsch Tschaikowsky, whom Igor Stravinsky charakterized as being 'deeply national', represents the culmination of 'Russion Classical music' of the late-eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Probably the most versatile of Russian composers, he made great and lasting contributions to all genres - operas, ballets, incidental music, symphonies and other orchestral works, chamber music, piano music, sacred and secural choral music, romances, Lieder and folk-song arrangements - establishing a special place for Russion music within the European tradition. Publications of the first complete edition of Tschaikowsky's works was started in the centenary year of his birth, 1940. Publication of a second edition will begin in 1993, the centenary of his death. There are important reason, both editorial and in terms of content, for a second edition to follow so soon. In the old edition, ideological considerations meant that some of the texts which Tschaikowsky set to music were arbitrarily altered. Similarly, quotations of the old Russian national anthem were replaced by other music. A number of works, or independent versions, werde completely overlooked. For example, the full score of the opera 'Vakula the Smith' (the first version of Cerevicki) and the unfinished Symphony in E flat major werde not standardized; in some cases no textual analysis was offered, and critical apparatures were simply dispensed with. The new complete edition will remedy these shortcomings. In addition to the composer's final versions, it will include alternative and earlier versions of works, as well as fragments and incomplete works, all reproduced faithfully from the sources. Documentation and discussion will be provided in Critical Commentaries. Piano reductions exist of the stage works, concertos and concertante pieces as well as of some of the cantatas and orchestral works, either written by Tschaikowsky himself, or revised or authorized by him. These are all to be included in the edition which, with its historico-critical approach, will address the need both of scholars and of practical musicians. The edition of musical works (Serie I-IX) is supplemented by a facsimile edition of all of Tschaikowsky's surviving sketches (Serie X), the texts of his diaries, writings and letters, including the three-volume Tschaikowsky-Mekk correspondence (Serie XI), a two-volume catalogue of works and a single-volume Tschaikowsky Encyclopaedia (Series XII).
