The three pieces From Jewish Life were composed by Swiss-American composer Ernest Bloch in 1924, the same year he took U.S. citizenship. Though clearly inspired and influenced by Jewish experience, they are purely concert pieces, and do not provide any specific liturgical significance.The first movement, Prayer, is a deeply heartfelt plea to the almighty. As Neil W Levin writes, The initial four-note motive in the minor mode, together with its elaboration in the ensuing phrases, sounds as if it might have served as the skeletal model for Max Janowski's (1912-1991) now well-known setting of the High Holyday prayer Avinu Malkenu. This prayer has special meaning in my own spiritual life, as I have been singing it since my childhood. Both Prayer and Janowski's Avinu Malkenu are cantorial in nature, to be sung with heartfelt pathos.The second movement, Supplication (the act of begging humbly), has more angst, almost a sense of urgency as a result of the rhythmic motor in the piano. The third movement, Jewish Song, evokes a quintessentially Eastern-European melancholy. Its falling motives with bent intonation might represent the pain of the Jewish experience.The works were dedicated to Dutch-American cellist Hans Kindler, a highly influential musician of his time, and founder of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. Mr. Kindler was the soloist for the world premiere of Bloch's most celebrated work, Schelomo in 1917.Though the popularity of Bloch's oeuvre has been dominated by works of Jewish connection, we should not forget that Bloch had many other stylistic periods, including Franco-Belgian, modal, serial, and even American folk. Daniel Akiva's Partita for violin solo consists of six movements based loosely on music of the Sephardic Jews. It was written for students as performance material, and dedicated to them. Contents: Liturgical Song Prayer Supplication Dance Kaddish SupplicationDaniel Akiva is a composer, performer, and educator whose performances on guitar and lute have won great acclaim. Mr. Akiva graduated from the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem in 1981, where he studied classical guitar with Haim Asulin and composition with Haim Alexander. In 1987 he completed his studies at the Geneva Conservatorium in Switzerland where he studied lute with Jonathon Rubin and composition with Jean Ballisa. For many years, he headed the Music Department at the WIZO High School for the Arts in Haifa, which he founded in 1986, and served as the Artistic Director of the Guitar Gems Festival from 2006-2019. As part of his work at WIZO High School, he has developed a method for teaching free improvisation that has been incorporated into the music program at the school. Mr. Akiva has appeared in concert as a guitarist and lutist and given master classes in Israel, Europe, Russia, the United States, and Latin America. Daniel Akiva’s compositional output includes works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, choir, voice and guitar, piano, and chamber orchestra. His works have been recorded on twelve CDs, the latest of which, Malchut, was issued by OR-TAV in 2014. A native of Haifa whose family has lived in Israel for over five hundred years, he was steeped in the Sephardic (Jewish-Spanish) tradition from his youth. Much of his compositional output has been devoted to a dialogue with the music of the Sephardic Jews. Daniel Akiva has also maintained a creative dialogue over many years with the poets and writers Amnon Shamash, Rivka Miriam, and Avner Peretz.

Studier av eksisterende laereverk i klaver avdekker at samtidsmusikkenskar ikke er tilfredsstillende. Med unntak av noen meget fa hefter,ivaretar de fleste laereverk som finnes pa markedet i liten gradsamtidsmusikken. Det er langt mellom stykker som inneholder andrekvaliteter enn de den romantiske klavertradisjonen star for.
EPTA-Norge onsket a bidra til at klaverelever pa mellom-trinnetskulle fa noen helt nye stykker a spille! Norsk kulturrad bidro til avirkeliggjore ideen. 10 norske komponister takket ja til oppgaven, ogher er resultatet.

RAG-SONATA - Maja Solveig Kjelstrup RatkjeDette lille stykket folger form som en sonate, med klare hoved- ogside-tema. Temaene horer sammen, og maten de er utledet pa folgerklassiske prinsipper som omvending og variasjon. Pa overflaten er deten tydelig inspirasjon fra ragtime-musikk, derfor ogsa tittelen Rag-sonata.
MOMENTS - Ketil VeaSatsen er en slags assosiasjon til klaverets uttrykkstradisjoner - memories om instrumentets idiomatiske muligheter slik jeg har bruktdem, men uten a pedagogisere, bortsett fra at jeg bevisst har unngatttekniske vanskeligheter, likevel slik at satsen kunne gis en bredklanglig utpensling. Hele verket bygger pa motivene i de to forstetakter. Satsens emosjonelle foringer vil jeg ikke si noe naermere om,de er ikke avgjorende for interpretasjonen.
INVENSJON OG KORAL - Eyvind SolasInvensjon og Koral er karakterstykker. Bade fortid og natid ertilstede i denne musikken, men den handler mer om uttrykk enn om stilog teknikk. Hva slags uttrykk? Det er opp til den enkelte utover afinne ut av. For her ligger utfordringen!
ANDANTE CANTABILE - Trygve MadsenDette stykket er bare en ovelse i finger-legato-spill, en sterkt forsomt og snart glemt ovelse
KONTINUUM - Bjorn KruseKontinuum betyr en organisk sammenheng, eller en utvikling fra noetil noe annet hvor overgangen er gradvis glidende. I dette stykketville jeg prove en spilleteknikk som handler nettopp om dette, a bindetonene sammen enkeltvis i en slags flytende strom, stadig pa vei motnoe annet.
SPILL - Magne Hegdal'Spill' er en kombinasjon av spontane ideer og streng struktur. Dettilfeldige kommer til uttrykk i musikkens stadige tilbakevending tiltidligere situasjoner (steder vi har vaert for). Det er som a leteetter vegen i en labyrint; eller som i et spill der terningen forlangerat en ma ga tilbake til et tidligere punkt i forlopet. Jeg synesmusikken har et litt uvirkelig preg - kanskje som et spill itussmorke... Spilleanvisningene i parentes er ment som forslag ellersom paminnelser.
4 MINIATYRER - Eivind BueneMusikken i 4 Miniatyrer foreligger i to versjoner: Som her, ifire enkeltsatser, og som Studie no. 3, hvor materialet i de fireminiatyrene utfolder seg mer eller mindre simultant. I 4 Miniatyrer blir de musikalske problemstillingene utforsket med tydeligeavgrensninger. Miniatyr no. 1, 2 og 4 byr pa noen rytmiskeutfordringer, mens no. 3 har en enkel, gjennomsiktig struktur, ogdermed ogsa andre utfordringer for pianisten. I den forste satsenforflytter en akkord seg i paralleller i en ustabil og springenderytmikk, samtidig som den vokser fra to - til firklang. Enkelte lengretoner blir liggende i bakgrunnen som en kontrast. Andre sats spiller pakontrasten mellom en ensom melodi i ytterregisteret og brutale, korteanslag i midtregisteret. Her er ogsa store sprang et tema. Tredje satser en liten koral, hvor forholdet mellom melodi og harmoni folger helttradisjonelle monstre. DYRISK STYKKER - Wolfgang PlaggeI tillegg til a vaere musikalske og humoristiske utfordringer erstykkene rent pedagogisk sett ogsa tenkt a forberede elevene pasamspill- og kammermusikk-situasjoner. Elevene blir utfordret til aflytte sine egne grenser ved at de far oppgaver som krever andre formerfor informasjonsopptak. Elevenes fysiske sa vel som mentaleaksjonsradius utvides.
VENT! - Synne SkouenHva er dette lille stykket? En smakranglete dialog? Et forsok pa astanse noe eller noen i flukten? En beskrivelse av ulike temperamenter?- Eller kanskje bare en ovelse i a frasere, og lytte mellomnotelinjene?
INTERMEZZO - Terje BjorklundI Intermezzo forenes tre korte motiver av tre komponister fra1900-tallets klaver-litteratur (minst to av disse burde vaere velkjentefor pianister). jeg har lenge folt at disse tre motivene horer sammen, og med denne bestillingen fikk jeg anledning til a forene dem.Intermezzo (mellomspill) beskriver vandringen fra det ene motivet ogtil det neste. Musikken kan godt spilles som om den var improvisert.
