Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1789 composed his famous
clarinet quintet KV 581 for his musical friend Anton
Stadler. Since Stadler preferably used a basset
clarinet, a clarinet with an extension for four low
additional notes, Mozart composed for this instrument.
Unfortunately the autograph got lost and we know the
quintet only from early prints arranged for the
ordinary clarinet. Here we present a reconstruction of
the clarinet part for the basset clarinet. A
reconstruction, of course, cannot be strict and
different musicians proposed different reconstructions,
which are presented here in a separate file. In another
file the history of Mozart’s clarinet quintet is
reported.
