William Ross (1878-1966) joined the Scots Guards as a Piper in 1896 and served in both the Boer war and the Great war before becoming an instructor at the Army School of Piping. His Collection Of Highland Bagpipe Music - Book 3 was one of 5 compilations of Bagpipe tunes and includes over 40 Marches Reels Jigs and Airs. With over 50 years of teaching and competing Ross is often said to be the most influential Piper of the century. This expansive volume certainly helps to cement that title!

These three pieces form a very short instrumental opera based on the life of James Reid a bagpiper in Prince Charlie's Jacobite army who was captured by the English in 1746 and executed after a judge had classified the bagpipes as a weapon. This piece is a string trio version of Sketches from a Bagpiper's Album (1984) for clarinet and piano scored for Violin Cello and Viola. Duration: c. 8 minutes. Score and parts included.

Jaromir Weinberger (1896-1967) was a Czech composer who spent most of his life in the United States becoming an American citizen in 1948. He wrote over 100 works but the only one which has endured to the present day is the 1926 opera Schwanda The Bagpiper which has been preformed in 17 different languages and was performed thousands of times between the wars. The Polka is one of the two orchestral excerpts from Schwanda The Bagpiper which are still regularly performed. It has been arranged here for Piano duet by Joan Trimble. Included are separate scores for each part.

For Piano Trio.The Brook Sings Loud was commissioned by the Aberdeen Chamber Music Club for the Kungsbacka Trio.'As this was one of the first pieces that the Club commissioned I thought it would be appropriatefor the piece to have some sort of Scottish theme or influence. I have always been interested in Pibroch (Piobaireachd) - classical bagpipe music that was prevalent from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries in the ScottishHighlands.
