Max Kowalski (18821956) was a full-time lawyer who never gave up on his passion for music: singing lessons during his law studies, conducting and counterpoint classes, among others, at Dr. Hochs Konservatorium in addition to his work at his own law office in Frankfurt. While studying, he already published his first works; 15 song cycles were published until 1933. In the years that followed, the Jewish-born Kowalski was restricted in working both as a lawyer and as a composer due to his persecution by the National Socialists. In 1938 he was arrested, deported to the concentration camp of Buchenwald and finally forcedto flee into exile in London. Contemporaries called Kowalski a lyricist among the composers. The choice of texts of his songs shows his great knowledge and love of German literature. For example, he set to music texts by Friedrich Holderlin or Rainer Maria Rilke, but also Indian or Japanese poems. Kowalski left numerous unpublished songs which are published by Schott Music in a two-volume edition: Volume 1 (ED 22586) contains his Jewish songs (1935-37), the Heinrich Heine cycle (1937) and all English-language songs (1941-46). Volume 2 (ED 22587) contains Kowalski's late works: the songs based on texts by Friedrich Holderlin (1950) and the Geisha Lieder according to Klabund (1951).

1840 was Schumann's famous “year of song†that brought forth over 100 lieder. They included Myrthen op. 25, which he dedicated “to his dear bride,†Clara Wieck-Schumann. Besides famous songs such as “Widmung,†“Lotosblume†and “Nussbaum†to texts by German poets, the collection also saw Schumann venture further afield, whether to the Scottish Highlands with settings of Robert Burns or to Italy for the “Venetian Songs†of Thomas Moore. Schumann specialist Kazuko Ozawa has examined the first edition of 1840 and all the manuscript sources. Among the dedicatory autograph copies she has also discovered interesting early versions of individual songs that are here published in an appendix. Our Urtext edition is rounded off with an extensive history of how Myrthen was composed. This volume is a superlative addition to G. Henle Verlag’s series of Robert Schumann's song cycles.

Rhei nberger's popularity during his lifetime was based, for the most part, on his secular choral music. His cycles for men's and women's choir, most of which were commissioned works, are contained in two volumes of the Complete Edition (vols. 19 and 20). Among this music there are humorous songs and drinking songs, idyllic settings of texts drawn from nature, and songs in a folk-like idiom which are light and easily performable, as well as several more ambitious compositions which were written for choral competitions in Rheinberger's day.

Abendröte is a cycle that brooks comparison with the songs Schubert wrote on the same set of Schlegel poems: Trojahn has composed the poems Schubert chose not to set.
