Hermann Schroeder's abundant oeuvre in the field of chorale-bound organ music is much less known among organists than his free - especially the concertante - organ works, although Hermann Schroeder as an organist felt particularly bound to liturgy and liturgical singing. And according to him, any liturgical organ music should always bear a direct relation to singing. The purpose of the present anthology is to provide the player a representative selection of Schroeder's chorale arrangements. Most of these chorales are relatively short and of medium difficulty at most. The chorale melody can be heard well most of the time so that the pieces are ideal for being used in church services. In the alphabetical index, the beginnings of song titles are accompanied by the corresponding number from Gotteslob (GL) or the Protestant Hymnal for better orientation.

The distinctive artistry of Mark Hayes continues to be enjoyed by pianists and organists alike. This organ collection draws from Hayes’s piano volume of “Christmas Miniatures”—short pieces of primarily two minutes or less in duration. Marvin Gaspard has re-imagined a selection of the piano originals for organ. Most are based on familiar Christmas carols, while three are freely-composed seasonal works.

Now finally in English too: The third part of the organ method Historical Performance Practice in Organ Playing follows on from part two with contributions by Guy Bovet (on Jehan Alain), Hans-Ola Ericsson, Anders Ekenberg, Markus Rupprecht (Olivier Messiaen), Hans Fagius (Maurice Durufle), Jeremy Filsell (Marcel Dupre), Bernhard Haas (Arnold Schonberg, Ernst Krenek, John Cage, Gyorgy Ligeti, and others, plus the latest developments) and Armin Schoof (neoclassicism). As in the first two parts of the organ method, here too a representative selection of composers is discussed. Alongside mainly personal recollections (e.g. from Hans Fagius) there are analytical essays (including by Jeremy Filsell). Bernhard Haas has organised one section of his text as an introduction to the playing techniques and aesthetics of new music, beginning with pieces which are easy to play. This English edition contains new chapters by Kevin Bowyer (The Development of New Organ Music in Britain / Contemporary Organ Music in North America). Laukvik's organ method Historical Performance Practice in Organ Playing has now become established as a standard work. It is aimed at organists who want to incorporate the latest thinking on historical performance practice into their interpretations of works. The three volumes provide a practical introduction in a detailed, scholarly and comprehensible form, by giving organists as precise a picture of the interpretative traditions and aims of previous and modern/ contemporary eras as possible. The editions are aimed not only at organists, but also at organ teachers who are looking for a manual to use in their teaching.

The Freiburger Orgelbuch 2 is mainly aimed at semi-professional organists who are looking for challenging pieces with a clear liturgical use. All liturgical situations are provided for: ceremonial processions, music for the offertory and communion, meditative organ music, and pieces based on chorales for the major festivals of the church year. Besides a wide range of German and Austrian organ music, there is additional variety with selected works by French, English, Spanish, Italian, and American composers. The arrangement of the contents by country reflects the international scope of the book. There are short commentaries on the pieces, providing information on each composer and questions of registration. The selection offers a broad stylistic variety, ranging from toccatas to Romantic character pieces and Vesper voluntaries. The easy-to-medium level of difficulty will be particularly welcomed by semi-professional organists. But more experienced players will also find previously little-known treasures of the organ music repertoire in this edition. The Freiburger Orgelbuch 2 will surely become an important compendium for organ teaching because of its broad contents. Selected works can be heard on a CD in top-quality recordings on newly-built and historic instruments in the Archdiocese of Freiburg in the Lake Constance region (Constance, Hilzingen), and the area around Karlsruhe.

Cliffhanger is a programmatic work for string orchestra that harkens back to the days of silent film. One of the lasting images of that time period is the Saturday afternoon matinee, where each episode ended on a cliffhanger until it could be continued next week. This piece tells the familiar story of the damsel in distress who is tied up to the train tracks as a train is approaching. Nicely done!.Cliffhanger is a programmatic work for string orchestra that harkens back to the days of silent film. One of the lasting images of that time period is the Saturday-afternoon matinee, where each episode ended on a cliffhanger until it could be continued next week. This piece tells the familiar story of the damsel in distress who is tied up to the train tracks as a train is approaching. The opening of the piece sets the scene with danger and desperation. By m. 6, our hero is making his way on horseback to rescue the fair maiden. This main melody is developed and passed around the ensemble until m. 36, at which point despair sets in. The music is rich with romantic harmonies and inner lines. Be sure to bring out these inner lines to add to the passion and drama of the moment. It continues to build until a thunderous arrival at m. 49. From there we return to our hero, who is now getting close to the train tracks to save the fair maiden. The tension becomes the highest at m. 61, when we are still not sure if our hero will make it in time. But alas, at m. 68 he swoops in to save the day and rescue the fair maiden. Of course, they live happily ever after. My hope is that your ensemble will have some fun with this style of music. It was adapted from an arrangement I wrote for the new pipe organ at the Walk Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. They wanted some scary train music to show children how the organ was used back before movies had sound. Strings provide a heightened sense of drama with this genre of music.
