L’Orfeo is an opera from 1607 based around the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. It is often cited as the earliest opera still regularly performed today. The libretto was written by the Italian lawyer anddiplomat Alessandro Striggio (1573-1630) for a carnival in Mantua. The music was composed by the Italian priest Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) arguably the greatest composer of the Renaissance era who is bestknown for his madrigals as well as his sacred works such as the Vespers.The Choruses From L’Orfeo have been edited by the Italian composer musicologist and editor Gian Francesco Malipiero(1882-1973).

In Nativitate Domini In Nocte. Par RYBA JAN JAKUB. The “Missa pastoralis in C”, published here for the first time, dates from about 1808. It belongs to a cycle of sacred pieces, a „Cursus sacro-harmonicus, “ which Ryba planned as Ordinarium and Proprium settings for all the Sundays and feast days of the church year. The “Missa pastoralis in C” is a pastoral Mass for the matutinal service at Christmas. Par KRAUS JOSEPH MARTIN. Joseph Martin Kraus [1756 1792] composed his Requiem in 1775at the age of 19 for the parish church in his hometown of Buchen, Odenwald. This followed the Miserere of 1773, and is the second of his surviving sacred compositions. Already in this early work Kraus shows that he was a representative of the musical ?Sturm und Drang.? With all its youthful unconcern towards compositional technique, this music displays his seriousness and strength of expression, together with a dark instrumental timbre, as well as an abruptness or at times brusqueness.
