The title has been taken from a review of Robert Schumann of the then newly published Preludes Op. 28. According to this reference, Stefan Heucke's Preludes are tributes to the three great piano composers of the 19th century: Chopin, Liszt and Schumann. By tradition, each of Heucke's 12 Preludes starts from a different keynote while attempting, however, to use major and minor modes at the same time in constantly new combinations.

The 48 Preludi of the Venetian composer Renato de Grandis (1927-2008) were created, in large part, in the years 1998-2002. It was only subsequently that he arranged them in 4 cycles of 12 preludes each, while also drawing back on older compositions. Written in a traditional pianistic style, they are short sketches which are sometimes characterized by musical thoughts, sometimes by moods or natural phenomena. The fourth volume presented here is once again divided into two cycles of 6 preludes each, with the first cycle paying tribute to the landscapes and towns of Friuli north of Venice.

Little Cadenzas, Canons and Preludes for Pianoforte, an album of 36 piano miniatures in all keys of the circle of fifths and in church modes, as well as two preludes by Eusebius Mandyczewski (1857-1929) that modulate through all keys, are presented here for the first time in print. Mandyczewski, who went down in music history as a Brahms friend, editor and archivist of the Vienna Musikverein, composed numerous vocal and piano works, including twelve Orthodox liturgies and two cycles of variations on themes by George Frideric Handel. The album, a birthday present from the composer to his twelve-year-old daughter Virginia, was written in the middle of the First World War and was not premiered publicly until a century later - after the manuscript was found in a Ukrainian library - at the Mandyczewski Festival in Chernivtsi (Ukraine) in 2017. Mandyczewski shows himself here as a master of the small form and counterpoint, but also as a demanding teacher - and so the pieces, once reserved for his daughter, will now be made accessible to a wider circle of young musicians to enjoy.
