Par RAUTAVAARA EINOJUHANI. Piano reduction for Einojuhani Rautavaara's Concerto for harp and orchestra (2000) available for the first time (2024)! This product includes also the solo part edited by Kalen Smith. The composer tells about the three-movement work: 'The concerto is in three movements. After the orchestral introduction, the harp leads into a gradually thickening texture that progresses into a series of powerful culminations. Once these subside, the expansive motifs of the introduction return. The solo is echoed by two harps in the orchestra: I wanted the magnificent sound to be multiplied. The simple melody in the second movement is coloured in a very archaic way by the orchestra; we might imagine the performance of a troubadour or a bard in ancient times. The finale is festive, 'solenne'. It presents the combined sonority of the three harps at its most colourful and melodic.' October 1928 – 27. July 2016) is internationally one of the best known and most frequently performed Finnish composers. He was by nature a romantic, even a mystic, as is often apparent from the titles of his works: for example Angels and Visitations for orchestra or his double-bass concerto Angel of Dusk. Written in 1899 while the French composer was studying at the Conservatoire de Paris under Gabriel Fauré, a small orchestra version was published in 1910 using woodwind, two horns, harp, and strings. In this arrangement - first performed by the Catrin Finch Ensemble - the trio of flute, viola (or clarinet) and harp draws out the music’s elegance and intimacy. Par SCARLATTI DOMENICO / NICHOLAS ELLIS (Arr.). Best known for his dazzling output of over 500 keyboard sonatas, Scarlatti revelled in invention, wit, and surprise. The Sonata in D major, K.96, sometimes nicknamed La chasse (“The Hunt”), is a brilliant example: full of bright fanfares, quicksilver figuration, and rhythmic playfulness that delights as much today as it did in the 18th century. Transcribed for flute, viola (or clarinet) and harp, the sonata’s crisp clarity takes on new colours. The harp brings sparkle and rhythmic bite, the flute adds brightness and agility, while the viola/clarinet lends warmth and balance. from String Quartet No.1 Op.11. Par TCHAIKOVSKY PYOTR ILYICH / NICHOLAS ELLIS(Arr.). The slow movement of Tchaikovsky’s First String Quartet is one of his most cherished melodies. Inspired by a Russian folk tune he had heard sung by a house servant, the Andante Cantabile combines heartfelt simplicity with the composer’s gift for lyrical expansion. The movement soon took on a life of its own, admired by Tolstoy and later arranged by Tchaikovsky himself for cello and orchestra. A pupil of the famous composer of his time Nicola Porpora, Pietro Domenico Paradisi (c. 1707 – c. 1791) gained a reputation through his teaching of singing and harpsichord. In 1754, he published a collection of twelve sonatas for harpsichord in London, which attracted the attention and esteem of connoisseurs. One piece took a particularly distinct course: it is the second movement of the fourth Sonata in A major, commonly known as “Toccata”, whose simplicity and joyful virtuosity captivated arrangers, conquered the world, and spanned the centuries.
