Alliage (Alloy) I (2009) for Tenor Saxophone and Classical Accordion by Niels Rosing-Schow. Programme Note The two instuments of this duo have some common features i.e. is the tone in both cases produced by air.The air is activated by the lungs of the saxophone player and by the bellow of the accordion. The stream ofair makes a blade of respectively wood and metal vibrate. Both instruments are also associated with thepopular musical tradition. But nevertheless the differences regarding the sound are more prominent thanthe similarities and contrary to the monophonic saxophone (a ’melody’ instrument) theaccordion is apolyphonic instrument which can produce several simultanious melodic lines and chords. At first glance this might call for a music which distributes distinct even contrasting musical roles to thetwo instruments such as melody versus accompaniment. But I refrain from this obvious ‘casting’ since Ihave always been fascinated by the less evident by transitions and gradual displacement by the intangibleplaces between one and the other. I search for this ‘terrain vague’ of fruitfull incertainty and permanentgenesis. To arrive here I have in this piece written a music which makes the possible relations and sonorous pathscome forward between the sound worlds of the two instruments. Bringing together the musical substances I look for an ‘air-driven’ musical organism with a glossy and shining appearance. The lively and brightsound world I associate to alloys in particular the silvery amalgamations of mercury. Niels Rosing-Schow

POD-Dans og Tegn i Luft for Ensemble was composed by Niels Rosing-Schow in 2015-16. Scored for Flute Clarinet Bassoon Harp Piano Violin Viola and Violoncello. Commissioned by The Danish Chamber Players for their 25-year Anniversary.Programme Note: A scenario from a park in Shanghai: a group of people dances to the crackling music from a ghetto blaster. Next to then a man is drawing Chinese characters on the street with a large brush dipped in water. The sound of the music comes and goes while the calligraphy soon evaporates in the warm air. Time hardly passes and makes itself present in analmost palpable way. The noise from the surrounding city threatens every now and then to destroy the poetic moment. At the appearance of a couple of guards the scene dissolves as from a magic touch as if nothing had happened. - Was this real at all? The music tries to reconstruct the memory of this imagery by putting together sound fragments of the scenario. But will the futile image appear? Or is it just the slight touch of melancholy from the memory which is left until it dissolves as signs in the air. Niels Rosing-Schow April 2016

Respiro Ergo Sum was composed by Niels Rosing-Schow in 2015 for Josefine Opsahl and Bjarke Mogensen. Scored for Cello and Accordion. Programme note: Breathing is an obvious part of music making - and not only in singing and for wind instrument players but for all musicians. Breathing is a condition for human life - and for music! It is intimately linked to phrasing it is reflected in the waves of tension and de-tension in music and so on and so forth. In this work it is directly made audible and visible as well portraying in music bodily (emotional?) conditions as they are expressed by our breathing.Niels Rosing-Schow 2015

Player's Score-Niels Rosing-Schow's Ut-Sons (Sea Songs) for Guitar Duo (2016). Commissioned by 'OpenDays Festival' for the guitar duo Per Dybro Sørensen and Michael Norman. Programme noteThe work has been written for a first performance at the Utzon Center in Aalborg Denmark. It is an important aspect of the work that it must communicate with the building's remarkable architecture. The title is a play on words on the name Utzon. Ut - Sons (French Ut = the note C) means 'C - sounds' and the note C is the centre of the opening music which returns several times in the first half of the piece. C - sounds isdeliberately miss-spelled as Sea Sounds in the subtitle of the work. This expresses the proximity of the sea which is heard in the music as re-occurring broken chords similar to the sound of small friendly waves on the beach sand.In between these easily recognizable musical elements are established 'musical rooms' which are different versions of a common harmonic musical material. The quasi-canonical passages played by the two guitarists are mirroring each other without ever being totally identical thus reflecting thesubtle broken symmetries of the building. Triptykon / Triptych for Organ solo by Niels Rosing-Schow. Triptych is written for the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017 commissioned by The Danish Society of Organists and Cantors. From the preface: The three movements of the work are musical images or situations with the middle one Toccata as its axis. The latter is intended as an image of the dispute between Luther and the ecclesiastical authorities which is the origin of the Reformation. Two of Luther's Reformation Hymns are more or less palpably present in the music.Theother two movements can be regarded as 'before' and 'after'. The first Exordíum is a 'fluid' situation but also a preparation which gradually accumulates a suspense pointing towards the discharge of energy of the Toccata. The third movement Hymn represents a serene situation where a wealth of hymnal fragments grows out of an underlying structure repeated several times (technically speaking a passacaglia). There are also elements however which are derived from the previous movements. Niels Rosing-Schow (2016)

Trees - Concerto for Violin Orchestra and Electronics by Niels Rosing-Schow (2001).Manuscript copy.Parts are for hire: hire@ewh.dkProgramme noteThe title 'Trees' should be regarded as a metaphor even though the electronic sounds in the piece are actually derived from trees. The piece is a metaphor of the multifaceted nature of the leaves on the trees the 'united difference' as the trees of the forest the 'life-giving' as trees transform CO2 into Oxygen). It is a metaphor of the ever returning and optimisticfoliation each spring) and in a broader sense a metaphor of organic nature. The violin concerto is a sounding organism which in more or less gradual transition appears in different shapes and states of condition. At some points the music is round and flexible and at others it is edged and hard. Sometimes it might remind us of something well known and from time to time it changes into something intangible - an indefinite state of nature. In contrast to the sonorous extreme the solo violin is portrayed as a manifestation of maximum (human) presence.Niels Rosing-Schow
