When Christa Landon presented the first printed version of her edition of Joseph Haydn's Piano sonatas Haydn's sonata oeuvre was still overshadowed by the works of Mozart and Beethoven. Since then Haydn's sonatas have progressed from the teaching rooms to the concert halls and Landon's edition has played a crucial role in that process. Since the Haydn anniversary in 2009 this 'legendary' edition has been thoroughly revised for over the course of more than forty years new sources have come to light. Questions of authenticity have also been resolved not least because the editorial principles for 18th-century music havechanged considerably. The new edition is published in four volumes the content of each volume being compatible with the volumes of the previous edition. Volume 3 of the new edition comprises the 17 sonatas Hob. XVI:21–32 and Hob. XVI:35–39 contained in Vol. 2 of the previous Wiener Urtext edition including popular works for music lessons such as Hob. XVI:27 35 and 37. In the Notes on Interpretation Robert D. Levin explains important aspects of Haydn's performance practice and with the help of numerous examples shows possibilities to embellish the pauses frequently used by Haydn.

Vol 1 Ut 50226 + Vol 2 Ut 50227-For more than 200 years Mozart’s piano sonatas have been part of every pianist’s repertoire. Research done over the last few decades has made it possible however to establish more accurate dating and ordering of these works. Expert examination of original documents has shown that many printed editions from the eighteenth Century give more reliable detail than Mozart’s own written scores; many of these works were prepared for publication by the composer himself and marked with precise indications for performance with regard to ornamentation dynamics and articulation. All this together with the rediscovery of documents that only becameaccessible again at the end of the 20th Century gives reason enough to justify the publication of a new Wiener Urtext edition of Mozart’s Piano Sonatas. To follow the second volume published in the spring of 2003 with Sonatas K 330 to K 576 we now present the first volume which contains the Sonatas K 279 to K 311. For Sonata K 284 variation XI in the final movement is given both in the version that appears in the original manuscript and in the version used in the first edition; in order to make the music easier to read both versions are given in normal print size. Music that is clear and well laid out with page turns in convenient places makes this edition extremely user-friendly.Advice on performance by the renowned Mozart specialist Robert D. Levin provides fresh stimulus for what can otherwise too often become a rather tired interpretation.

F minor A major C major-Bärenreiter continues its Urtext edition of the complete Beethoven Piano sonatas. They begin with the frequently played Op.2 Sonatas (Nos. 1-3) (BA10859) which stem from his early yet mature oeuvre when he was developing an independent style from the legacy of Mozart and Haydn. They then proceed to the lyrical D major Sonata Op.28 (BA11814) from his middle period (nicknamed ?Pastorale? by the publisher of the original edition) and finally to the Sonata Op.101 (BA11811) Beethoven?s first sonata specifically intended for the ?hammerklavier? and the one that introduced his esoteric late style to the Piano sonatas. The acclaimedBeethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar has consulted every known source for these critical Urtext performing editions. In addition he has analysed various copies of the prints published during Beethoven?s lifetime. The results of his accurate research are presented in a meticulously edited musical text at the cutting edge of scholarship together with a detailed Critical Commentary. All volumes stand out in terms of their elegant and well-presented layout. Special emphasis has been placed on optimum page-turns and on the consideration of the flow of the music. The highly informative Introductions on the genesis and significance of the works are supplemented by valuable notes on historical performance practice.New critical performing editions at the cutting edge of scholarship.Optimum page-turns.Introductions with valuable notes on historical performance practice (Eng/Ger) and Critical Commentaries (Eng).

Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. BeethovenÂ’s Sonatas for Pianoforte and Violin are now available at a special set price. The set consists of volume I (BA 9014) and volume II (BA 9015).
BeethovenÂ’s ten sonatas for piano and violin, along with those by Mozart, constitute the heart of this classical music genre. Following the lead of MozartÂ’s late sonatas, Beethoven lets the violin part become increasingly independent from the piano part.
Not only does Clive BrownÂ’s scholarly critical edition offer a meticulously edited text but for the first time it presents a list of sources and a Critical Report. Furthermore Brown documents a great number of passages where, by todayÂ’s standards, the notation raises some questions. These passages had previously been overlooked in the autograph but their significance is now clarified.
One example can be found in Beethoven’s “Tempo di Minuetto” from Sonata op. 30 No. 3, where he uses a notational idiosyncracy based on C.P.E. Bach’s “Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen” to denote a rest. This musical symbol, which was included in the first edition published during Beethoven’s lifetime, has not been addressed in any modern edition to date.
In addition, a score through a chord can also not be found in previous modern editions - this denotes an arpeggiated chord./ Recueil / Violon et Piano

As early as the age of four Mozart amazed his father with his quickness of mind as regards Piano-playing. The first works are easy dance movements by the five-year-old who developed with extraordinary speed. During his lifetime he created several Piano pieces apart from the sonatas and variations. The pieces from his youth most of them written down in the music book for Maria Anna Mozart and in the so-called London sketch book are mostly short dance movements but there are already lengthy individual movements as well. From the mid-1770s there are mainly larger individual works including fantasias and rondos which can stand as equals to the sonatas andvariations of the Viennese period.Volume 1 contains the pieces from Mozart's youth which are ideally suited for elementary teaching; they constitute a varied repertoire of alternatives to the few frequently played Piano pieces by young Mozart which of course are contained in this volume as well.

Mozart's works for Piano duet form the first highlight of this genre which later is only achieved by Franz Schubert. The two early sonatas from the Salzburg period which are particularly suited for music teaching in secondary schools are opposed to three effective compositions from his Viennese period. The present volume also contains the sonata KV 19d the authenticity of which is not confirmed as well as two fragmentary movements dated from Mozart's last years of life KV 357. Robert D. Levin has completed them true to style for practical use taking the limitations of the keyboards of the Mozart Pianos and the composer's personal style into account unlike as in the first edition of ca. 1860. In the appendix there are the two fantasias KV 594 and 608 originally composed for mechanical organ adapted from the earliest arrangements for piano duet published a few years after Mozart's death. In this edition the music text is published in the form of a score for the first time.
