Sonatina s form a vital part of the teaching material for beginner and intermediate piano students. Compared to the great classic piano sonatas, they are technically and musically simpler and typically shorter. However, they still convey the basic elements of Classical style: the relation of melody to accompaniment, articulation, stylistically authentic playing, and correct interpretation. For the two volumes of Giraffe Piano, the most favoured and instructive of the sonatinas have been chosen. Volume 1 contains simpler pieces and Volume 2 is compromised of moderately difficult ones. Correct interpretation of the pieces is facilitated by added performance and fingeringmarks. Learning is helped along by clear presentation of the score, carefully placed page turns, and by inspiration from colour images showing the keyboard instruments of the 1720-1820 period for which the pieces were written. The most notable of them is the giraffe piano, after which the collection is named.

Prokofiev's Piano Sonatas 6â??8 are often referred to as â??war sonatasâ?, since they were composed in Russia during World War II during times of great hardship. As the shortest of the three, no. 7 is entirely focused on the essentials, and is certainly Prokofiev's most famous piano sonata. Anyone who has heard it will not forget the hasty first movement, marked â??Allegro inquietoâ?, the cantabile theme of the second movement and the relentless pull of the machine-like, thudding finale. The Sonata appeared in print in 1943 and that same year received the Stalin Prize (second category), including prize-money of 50,000 rubles, which was welcomed with great joy in the Prokofiev household. You can also derive joy from Prokofiev's Seventh Sonata, here critically edited on the basis of all the sources, and produced using Henle's legendary music engraving. A preface by the world's most prominent Prokofiev researcher, Simon Morrison, rounds off the edition.

Italian composer, Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) is well-known for his Keyboard compositions. His 555 Keyboard Sonatas remain ever popular to this day, and it is for this reason that this first volume of Selected Sonatas is indispensable to performers of the genre. Originally composed for the Harpsichord, Organ or early Pianoforte, the sonatas display the riveting use of discords and unconventional modulations to remote keys. It is also thought that much of Scarlatti's Keyboard music contains influences of Iberian music, considering that he spent much of his working life in the service of the Spanish and Portuguese royal families. The first volume of Selected Sonatas, compiled by Kenneth Gilbert, includes many of the popular and recognised sonatas. Bearing in mind that Domenico Scarlatti was a highly competent and popular Keyboard player in his day, so much so that he was employed in the service of two royal families, his sonatas are composed with much experience, understanding and expertise, creating an essential addition to the repertoire of all Keyboard players of the Baroque genre. .

There are many composers of whom it is said today that they had gone back in time or had composed against contemporary taste. Today, the question arises, though, as to what of value is to be extracted, rediscovered, or re-edited. Camillo Schumann (1872-1946) is one of these nearly forgotten composers. His works are still largely unknown today. Schumann's tonal language combines the Brahmsian sound scape with the grand late romantic Liszt school. His piano pieces range even to sounds reminiscent of Rachmaninoff and are of tremendous power and virtuosity. The pronounced and inventive melody makes the works the testimony of a composer who has not yet come to the fore. His two sonatas for clarinet and piano have hitherto remained completely unknown. This is astonishing, for they are on the level of the sonatas of Johannes Brahms, who probably contributed the most essentially to this genre. Surfacing as a special treasure from the estate of the Saxon musicologist and collector Harald Schurz were the autographs of both clarinet sonatas, now to be published for the first time. Remember falling in love with the expressive qualities of the Brahms sonatas? You can rekindle that feeling with these works by Camillo Schumann. Commentators have compared Schumann's works not only to Brahms, but also to Liszt and Rachmaninoff. Run to your shop and order now.(Gregory Barrett, The Clarinet)The first edition of a forgotten treasure.

ABRSM Syllabus title, Grade 5 The original source of these sonatas for cello and double bass duo was a collection created by G.A. Perti and his pupils in Bologna around 1695. Among the easy and small-scale movements (at most 28 measures long), the most quintessential dances of the Baroque era are represented. Some of these compositions can be played after a mere 3 years of instrumental study, therefore music students can use them as an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the fundamentals of baroque style. The simple development of the continuo allows for it to be played by a pupil performing alongside their teacher. The pieces also sound great when played on two cellos.

Giovanni Maria Bononcini (1642-1678) published in Bologna in the last year of his life, i. e. in 1678 a collection of 24 movements for two violins and basso continuo entitled Arie e Correnti a tre (Op. 12). In agreement with the sonata da camera traditions of the early Baroque the collection is a series of 9 two-movement and 2 three-movement sonatas. It was published again in London in 1701 with the title Ayres in 3 parts. Four years later a revised edition of the work appeared, also in London, which bore the title Bononcini's Aires for two Flutes and a Bass. The edition published in Amsterdam without date, but presumably around 1725, with the title Preludes, Allemandes,Sarabandes, Courantes, Gavottes et Gigues á 2 Flutes ou Violons et une Basse, is essentially a reprint of the London edition. The present edition contains this posthumous revised variant. Territorial restrictions may apply. Please ask before ordering.

Sonata for Two Pianos was written in 1942 by Pál Járdányi at the young age of twenty-two years old when he had recently graduated from the Academy of Music. It is a quintessential showy concert piece which György Ligeti evaluated in 1949, when the sheet music was first released, as the 'worthy companion' of Bartók's and Hindemith's two-piano sonatas. The composition, originally written for string quartet, was reworked into an arrangement for keyboard instruments by Járdányi on Kodály's advice, preserving the musical language of the work which refers to Bartók in many places, and in which the features of Járdányi's later style can already be seen.

“Bohu slav Martinu (1890-1959) was a prolific Czech composer, writing many large scale works. The composer moved to Paris in 1923 where he began experimenting in a variety of composition styles. Sonatine for Trumpet and Piano was composed in 1957 and is adaptable to both the B flat and C Trumpet. Martinu himself was a violinist but he liked to experiment and the mid-1950s saw him move to Nice in France, where he began writing Sonatas for wind and brass. Sonatine for Trumpet exemplifies the composer's influence of Stravinsky, Debussy and jazz music. The piece is excitingly virtuosic in its use of flutter tonguing, complex rhythms, chromaticism, and ensemble between the Trumpet and Piano. As a varied, substantial work for the Trumpet repertoire, Martinu's Sonatine is essential to the advanced trumpeter.&rdquo.
