Beethoven's Romance No. 2 Opus 50 has been a staple of Violinists for over 210 years, having been written in 1798. The C major Romance is a tender, adagio cantabile movement full of beauty, requiring grace, poise and elegance to perform properly. It has been said that it could have been titled Song Without Words, the music being so lyrical of character. 'Romance' may have been written as a slow movement to a Violin Concerto that was never completed. This arrangement by Gordon Cherry is a wonderful addition to the Tuba & Bass Trombone repertoire.
A lmost 10 minutes in length, this work for advanced performers will be a great addition to any recital.

Beethoven wrote two Romances for violin and orchestra; his second one, the Op. 40 in G Major, was actually published in 1802, two years before the Op. 50 in F Major, even though the F Major Romance was composed four years earlier. The double stops of the violin solo are faithfully preserved in this arrangement, and careful attention to articulation and emphasis on melodic playing by every section of the band will make this piece an ideal choice to introduce the music of this master composer to young musicians.

Beethoven'sR omancesare performed all over the world, yet how many conductors, performers and listeners are aware that op. 50 which was incidentally composed before op. 40, comes down to us in an unfinished form? The autograph score contains little to no articulation or dynamics and to the present day the work has existed only in highly over-edited publications. The performer has no way of knowing what was originally intended by the composer. Barenreiter's new Urtext edition of opp. 50 and 40 offers the score to op. 50 twice; the first score reflects the state of Beethoven's autograph with editorial markings clearly indicated, the second score has been edited based on other works by Beethoven from that period. This manner of publishing remains true to the sources and at the same time offers musicians a reliable transparent score for performances. In addition to the Urtext solo part, a second solo part with fingering and bowing by Detlef Mahn is also included in the piano reduction.- Piano reduction which includes an Urtext solo part as well as an additional solo part with fingering and bowing- The score to op. 50 available in two versions- Detailed critical commentary (Eng).
