Beethoven's Meeres Stille und Gluckliche Fahrt (Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage) op. 112 for four-part mixed chorus and symphony orchestra - his setting of a pair of poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - defies straightforward categorization, but can best be described as a choral ode. Beethoven in fact never voyaged by sea, but his composition, premiered in 1815, continues to surprise even today. He depicted in music the smooth surface of the motionless water and the oppressive calm, which meant nothing other than being becalmed, a delayed voyage, and short rations in the era of sailing, with the same intensity as a freshening increasing wind, with which Aeolus, the God of the winds, ultimately enabled the longed-for prosperous voyage to take place. The composed calmness of the motionless sea is conveyed in the low register used throughout, in which the chorus sings the first poem accompanied by washes of pianissimo sounds on the strings. There is a surprising moment with the musical portrayal of the ungeheuere Weite (immense breadth), at which the vocal-instrumental writing suddenly crescendos to forte and unfolds into a texture of over five octaves. By contrast Gluckliche Fahrt is written in restlessly-compiled meters, whose musical setting in flowing movement with diatonic scale passages evokes happy excitement and confidence. The work was dedicated to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whom Beethoven greatly admired throughout his life. The work has now been published in a new critical edition based on the first printed edition and the performance score which Beethoven himself checked and corrected. The genesis of Beethoven's 4th symphony came at an extraordinary time for the composer not only regarding productivity: Thus, in 1806 he composed, among other things, the 4th piano concerto, the three Rasumovsky string quartets op. 59, the 32 piano variations in c minor WoO 80, as well as the violin concerto op. 61. The first performance of the B-flat-major symphony occurred in March 1807 at one of the two noteworthy subscription concerts conducted by Beethoven in the Palais Lobkowitz in Vienna. In the course of time, this intellectually-stimulatin g work- so described by one of the reviewers of the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung - found ever-increasing appeal. Throughout the entire 19th century this symphony ranked with the best-loved and most frequently performed works; its popularity spread to England where the London Philharmonic Society played it at least 25 times in the period between 1813 and 1850.Extant are only a few drafts of the 4th symphony. The autograph served as the main source for the present edition edited by Prof. Bathia Churgin, likewise editor of the 3rd symphony in the new Beethoven Complete Edition. Consulted as reference sources were copies of the score and orchestral parts as well as the original edition of the parts.

Beet hovens Eroica-Sinfonie liegt in zwei Bearbeitungen für Klavierquartett vor: von Ferdinand Ries (entstanden um 1804/1805) und von einem anonymen Bearbeiter (fl. 1807). Beide Fassungen bieten eine getreue Umsetzung der Vorlage, unterscheiden sich allerdings in Herangehensweise und Details. Obgleich Ries' Klavierquartett-Fassung der Eroica für den breiten Markt bestimmt war und folglich darauf zielen musste, von Laien musiziert zu werden, stellt sie doch erhebliche Anforderungen an jeden der vier Musiker; insbesondere das Pianoforte ist stark am musikalischen Geschehen beteiligt - ein Vergleich mit der Bearbeitung seines ungenannten Wiener Kollegen von 1807 ist dabei sehr aufschlussreich: Dort kommt der Klavierpart sehr viel simpler daher, verzichtet weitgehend auf Oktavierungen und vertraut imitatorisch geführte Passagen entweder ganz oder jedenfalls wesentlich den Streichern an. Ries' Bearbeitung ist einmal ein ausgewachsenes Klavierquartett, in dem sich die Kunstfertigkeit des angehenden Komponisten äußert, der um 1804/1805 gerade einmal zwanzig Jahre alt war. Und sie bietet eine kongeniale Umsetzung von Beethovens dritter Sinfonie für eine kleinere Besetzung.(Guido Johannes Joerg) Die Satzfolge ist: Allegro con brio Marcia funebre. Adagio assai Scherzo.
