Abendstern, composed by Lauren Bernofsky,?evokes an image of a sunset over the tree-covered hills of the Bavarian countryside with the Abendstern, or evening star, shining brightly over the scene. A hauntingly beautiful theme in falling thirds?evokes the treetops as they become darker and murkier. This piece is a wonderful addition to any concert program and can be used as a touching?tribute at a memorial service. One summer night during a visit to Bavaria in southern Germany, I stood outside on a balcony overlooking the hills of the Bavarian forest, watching the beautiful early-evening sky. It was still light out, but I could make out one solitary star in the sky. As the sun slowly went down, the landscape became more and more dark and indistinct, and the star shone brighter and brighter. My mother-in-law stood there with me. I asked her the name of the star, and she answered, Abendstern (or Evening Star.) I was so moved by what I saw, I went inside and took out my manuscript paper and started to write down this piece. The tree-covered hills and tranquility of the evening are evoked by the theme, whose contour (with little bumps) mirrors the contour of the treetops on the hills. The star is represented by the sustained note E; at the beginning of the piece, it can be heard in a low register in the violas, and over the course of the piece, it is heard in higher and higher octaves, as the star shines ever more brightly. By the end, the landscape has disappeared into the darkness, and now all we see is the star, shining its brightest, and played by the upper strings, now harmonized to convey its brilliant light..One summer night during a visit to Bavaria in southern Germany, I stood outside on a balcony overlooking the hills of the Bavarian forest, watching the beautiful early-evening sky. This piece by Benjamin M. Culli paints a beautiful image of heaven. Arranged for SATB and piano, Culli treats the text with a lyrical tune and supportive piano accompaniment. The piece builds and modulates in the middle section, then finishes quietly in the original key. A moving selection for All Saints' Day.
A rest remains for all the weary;Arise , sad heart, and grieve no more;Though long the way, and dark and dreary,It opens to the golden shore.Befor e His throne the Lamb will lead you,On heav'nly pastures He will feed you,Cast off your burden, come with haste;Soon toil and strife will be unraveled,T he weary way that you have traveled,Sw eet is the rest that you will taste.
The Father's house has many a dwelling,An d there for you a place will be.With perfect love His heart is wellingWho loved you from eternity.Hi s precious blood the Lamb has givenThat you may share the joys of heaven,And now He calls out far and near:'You weary souls, cast off your sorrow; My light shines bright upon the morrow.Come , sweetest rest awaits you here!'
There rest and peace in endless measureWill be ours through eternity; No grief, no care, will mar our pleasure,An d untold joy our lot will be.Oh, had we wings to hasten yonder—No more this sinful world to ponder—To join the glad, triumphant band!Arise, my soul, forget all sadness,For peace awaits you, joy and gladness— The perfect rest and promised land.

“Go lden Hour” is a slow work that describes the magical moment of the golden hour before sunset, when the world melts into warm shades of colour. The setting sun bathes everything in a soft, golden light and nature shines in its most beautiful splendour and time seems to stand still. But darkness also slowly falls and the day takes its quiet farewell.
