In the poem Music, Ralph Waldo Emerson reminds us that music can be found in all things good and bad; this choral setting is an artful expression of that idea. Rich chords bring warmth, harmonic and melodic sequences add finesse, and unexpected suspensions provide depth. A solid choice.

J. S. Bach (1685-1750) was a German Baroque composer who is revered for the originality and skill of his contrapuntal and harmonic techniques. He spent most of his life working as an organist and choirmaster, but was also employed as a composer a many different Royal Courts. However, his skill as an organist and composer for Organ is what gained him the reputation he enjoyed during his lifetime.
This is perhaps epitomised by his Fantasia and Fugue in G Minor (BWV 542), often referred to as the Great Fantasia and Fugue. It has been edited by Sir Frederick Bridge and James Higgs.

While many electric bassists study the Bach cello suites at some point, few attempt the sonatas and partitas for unaccompanied violin BWV 1001-1006 . Composed around 1720, the sonatas and partitas display rich polyphonic writing, unlike the simpler monophonic cello suites. This collection features a challenging but rewarding transcription of the complete A minor Violin Sonata BWV 1002 , which fits particularly well on the bass. Also included are the well-known gavotte en rondeau from the E major violin partita BWV1006 and the complete A minor partita for solo flute BWV 1013 , transposed here to D minor. Finally, an arrangement of the familiar chorale Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring from BWV 147 takes advantage of the basss natural and artificial harmonics. Performance notes are included. Written in notation and tablature for the 4-string electric bass.

Particularly during the early 1740s, Johann Sebastian Bach concentrated intensely on studying the compositional technique of strict vocal polyphony. As an inspiration, he studied the works of older masters, copying them and, for the most part, performing them as well. A set of single parts for the Missa canonica by Francesco Gasparini in an instrumentation by Bach were recently discovered in the collection of the former Ephoralbibliothek Weissenfels; some of the parts are in Bach's own handwriting. Gasparini was esteemed in Germany particularly as a master of elaborate counterpoint and audacious harmonic writing. Bach amended the music text with a view to certain aspects of performance practice, clearly following a very specific concept of sound organization. His interest in strict counterpoint was paralleled by a tangible re-orientation in Bach's own compositional technique at the beginning of the 1740s. Francesco Gasparini's Missa canonica therefore served as a practical model for the highly developed art of canon writing and the strict polyphony in Bach's late works, as we encounter them, for example, in the B minor Mass.

Fo r this transcription the author used a photographic copy of the autograph manuscript of Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin (BWV 1001-1006) by Johann Sebastian Bach, dated 1720 and kept in the Staatbibliothek Preussicher Kulturbesits, Berlin. The adjustments to the original text mainly concern: harmonic enrichments suggested by the implicit polyphony, which is typical of the works for string instruments by Bach: necessary corrections to remedy simple misprints: a clearer and more complete polyphony. For this reason, when two or more voices moves homorhythmically, the related pauses are grouped to avoid graphic overload, according to the current practice.

It was 1995 when I had the fortune to listen to the freshly published recording of the suites performed by Mstislav Rostropovich. I would have given anything to be able to play them, and this was what inspired me to study the bass clarinet. The series of diverse emotions which I subsequently experienced made me see Music in a completely new way. I began learning them slowly, inevitably adapting the text. As I discovered their educational value, the knowledge of harmonic structures, forms and stylistic features gradually evolved within me. Over 20 years I have studied various editions and listened to the meaning which these suites have had for many famous performers. I pleasantly discovered the commendable work of other clarinettists who in turn have dedicated themselves to approaching this composer with the bass clarinet. The objective of this version isn’t to impose conditions on how to play the suites. We carried out unique research into the coherence of the text, based on the manuscripts of Anna Magdalena Bach and Johann Peter Kellner. The choice to remove any type of articulation and agogic was made in order to encourage the development of personal interpretation, which obviously requires a fundamental investigation of the sources. This edition comes with 4 versions of the suite. The reason behind producing four versions (which are in different keys and tones) is because every musician has their own tastes and tendencies. Personally, I prefer the bass clef transposed to B flat because I find the bass clef to be the most appropriate for the spirit of the low instrument.

Parisian violinist Georges Catherine (1872-1958) compiles an exciting collection for the violin repertoire. J. S. Bach's Menuet and Gigue is clearly printed with all edited and necessary performance directions. J.S. Bach (1685-1750) is one of the greatest composers of all time. His compositions for the violin were significant, most of which remain popular today in the advanced violinist's repertoire. The violin solo line of Menuet and Gigue makes use of harmonics, bow techniques, aritculations, fast semiquavers, and ornamentation. Catherine's series, Violin Classics provides essential access to significant repertoire of the violin, preparing advanced violinists for the major works of the repertoire.

Nearly every classically trained pastoral musician will recognize the tune by Philipp Nicolai and the harmonization of J. S. Bach. Lynn Trapp here offers the assembly a way to join in this venerable Advent hymn by providing them an appropriate (and familiar sounding) refrain to slip in between the major phrases of the hymn. The verses are sung by cantor or choir or both.
