The Bach commentary discusses, in four extensive volumes, Johann Sebastian Bach's complete sacred vocal works from a theological point of view.

In the scope of previous research, musicologists attempted to understand Johann Sebastian Bach's sacred vocal works based on a general knowledge of the Lutheran church and theology. A theological equivalent to the fundamental Bach research presented by musicologists - one that would mainly draw from the contemporary theology relevant for the texts Bach set to music - has not been presented until now. Closing this gap, the Bach commentary is based on extensive theological research and offers readers comprehensible insights into the Bible interpretation used by Johann Sebastian Bach in his sacred vocal works.

Volume IV contains Bach's masses, Magnificat, and motets.

Different versions have been evaluated, as well as the relationships of the works to each other (the parody models).

Introductory chapters for each genre place it in its music-historical and biographical context.
The available relevant new editions for each work and each version are listed. In addition, the many indices included make this handbook an indispensable reference work. Bach vocal is published in hardback and as an e-book.
The author Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Christoph Wolff is one of the leading Bach scholars of his generation. He is Professor emeritus of Harvard University and was Director of the Leipzig Bach-Archiv from 2001 to 2013.

Motets (BWV 118, 225-231) account for a rather small work group within the great number of sacred vocal works composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Only six motets have survived; their most striking feature being their mostly double-chorus texture, often without a verifiable instrumental or continuo accompaniment. They were presumably written at the beginning of Bach's time in Leipzig, i.e. after 1723.The present work, Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden, is one of only two motets by Bach in which the entire text comes from the Bible, in this case the two verses of Psalm 117.Performance editions of all other sacred vocal works by Johann Sebastian Bach are also available at Breitkopf & Hartel.
