The Bach commentary discusses, in four extensive volumes, Johann Sebastian Bach's complete sacred vocal works from a theological point of view.In the scope of previous research, musicologists attempted to understand Johann Sebastian Bach's sacred vocal works based on a general knowledge of the Lutheran church and theology. A theological equivalent to the fundamental Bach research presented by musicologists - one that would mainly draw from the contemporary theology relevant for the texts Bach set to music - has not been presented until now. Closing this gap, the Bach commentary is based on extensive theological research and offers readers comprehensible insights into the Bible interpretation used by Johann Sebastian Bach in his sacred vocal works.Volume IV contains Bach's masses, Magnificat, and motets. The authorMartin Petzoldt was Professor for Systematic Theology at the theological faculty of the Leipzig University.

For many choral singers Jesu, meine Freude is not just a motet by Bach, but the motet par excellence. Bach's motets as a whole have to be described as exceptional works, but even amongst these this is an exceptional work which is out of the ordinary not only in terms of its length. The formal conception, with its alternating chorale and Bible verses in 11 sections in a symmetrical structure, is also unique. The motet was very probably composed for a funeral, but no further details about this are known. By comparison, there are clear indications that the motet, as we now know it, was probably not composed in one go, but was composed over a long period of time. Johann Kuhnau's extant vocal works will be fully complete in the Breitkopf & Hartel catalogue in coming years. These are cantatas as a rule, but at least works with instrumental accompaniment. The Three Motets in this volume are therefore unique, including in addition to the well known Tristis est anima mea, also the two other extant Kuhnau motets Ach Gott, wie lasst du mich verstarren, as well as Gott hat uns nicht gesetzt zum Zorn. Each one, of five parts (with the tenor or canto part doubled), these masterpieces round out the picture of Johann Kuhnau, Johann Sebastian Bach's predecessor as St. Thomas cantor. Really interesting. Kuhnau shows a real feeling for the texts he is setting, with effective chromaticism in the doleful 'Tristis est anima mea'.(Jeremy Jackman, Choir & Organ).

In his handbook Bach vocal. Ein Handbuch, the renowned Bach scholar Christoph Wolff has compiled the basic information on all of Johann Sebastian Bach's vocal works in a compact, clear form. Alongside titles, date of composition, librettists, and scoring, for each individual movement the scoring, text incipit, and meter are given. Different versions have been evaluated, as well as the relationships of the works to each other (the parody models). All groups of works and genres are presented in a systematic classification: as well as the church cantatas, oratorios, Passions, motets, and the Latin church music, the catalog also includes the secular cantatas and related works which are interrelated with the sacred works in many ways. Introductory chapters for each genre place it in its music-historical and biographical context. The available relevant new editions for each work and each version are listed. In addition, the many indices included make this handbook an indispensable reference work. Bach vocal is published in hardback and as an e-book.The author Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Christoph Wolff is one of the leading Bach scholars of his generation. He is Professor emeritus of Harvard University and was Director of the Leipzig Bach-Archiv from 2001 to 2013.

Motets (BWV 118, 225-231) account for a rather small work group within the great number of sacred vocal works composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Only six motets have survived; their most striking feature being their mostly double-chorus texture, often without a verifiable instrumental or continuo accompaniment. They were presumably written at the beginning of Bach's time in Leipzig, i.e. after 1723.The present work, Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden, is one of only two motets by Bach in which the entire text comes from the Bible, in this case the two verses of Psalm 117.Performance editions of all other sacred vocal works by Johann Sebastian Bach are also available at Breitkopf & Hartel.

The Complete Chorales are an Urtext edition of all four-part chorales by Johann Sebastian Bach and the new standard in editing for this genre. Musicologist Thomas Daniel, a well-known specialist for the topic of Bach chorales, divided the chorales in two parts of about equal length: Chorales from cantatas, motets, and passions that were confirmedly written by Bach are found in the first part, while the second part includes chorales from later sources and printings, e.g. the four-volume edition published by Breitkopf in 1784 to 1787. Thereby, the authentic chorales are clearly separated from the chorales of partly dubious authorship for the first time. Drawing on new sources, e.g. from the archive of the Berliner Sing-Akademie, some settings can even be attributed to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - contrary to his claim in the preface of the Breitkopf edition that all songs were created by my dear late father. The volume includes an informative preface and a separate introduction on the edition for both parts while giving editorial remarks for each chorale for the first time, directly below the score. Additionally, it provides helpful indices that allow searches for text incipits, BWV numbers, melody composers, and lyricists.Get an insight into our material with the reading sample. In the Download section, you can also find a concordance to the previous edition. This is a treasure trove of fine music, beautifully presented and intelligently edited. [...] It will become my reference for Bach chorales. (Jeremy Summerly, Choir & Organ)All four-part chorales by Bach in an Urtext edition for the first time. Authentic chorales clearly separated from those of dubious attribution. New insights on the authorship of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.
