Although many of the greatest composers from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods did not write for marimba, their works are still available and are perfectly suited for this instrument. Many of these works were written for violin and contain bowings and fingerings that assist in the stylistic interpretation for violin but do not apply to marimba. To that end, Tammy Chen has arranged a collection of outstanding pieces that work perfectly for marimba. To aid the performer in developing a musical interpretation of these master works, she added stylistic markings including phrasing, articulations and musical directives. Violin/Marimba-Marimolin commissioned by and dedicated to Nancy Zeltsman and Sharan Leventhal is a work in three parts in the familiar “fast-slow-fast” format of a classical concerto. In fact it is loosely based on one aspect ofStravinsky's Concerto in Ré (1946) for string orchestra in that the first movement in triple meter and the last movement in duple meter are written at the same metronome marking of = 126. The middle movement slow andmolto cantabile is the centerpiece and focal point of the entire work. The “concerto” character is preserved in Marimolin not only by the timbral contrast between the marimba and the violin but by the soloistic rolesthat each instrument is asked to perform. Par PEPIN CAMILLE. Lorsque j'ai commencé à écrire la pièce, c'est le timbre du marimba d'Adélaïde Ferrière qui a été l'élément déclencheur de mon inspiration. En effet, j'ai immédiatement associé ce timbre aux estampes des pluies d'été du peintre japonais Hasui Kawase (1883-1957). Pour ces images de pluie qui tombe, j'ai alors imaginé des sonorités percussives pour et autour du marimba. Ainsi sont nées les premières mesures de la pièce comme les premières gouttes d'une averse naissante.
Comme pour la technique de l'estampe qui consiste à sculpter dans le bois en utilisant des blocs de couleurs différentes, j'ai conçu la matière sonore comme un ensemble où les trois instruments sont étroitement entremêlés. C'est le mélange de ces trois instruments qui donne à l'oeuvre une ambiance sonore particulière, teintée de modalité et de musique traditionnelle. Dans ces estampes, il y a de nombreux jeux de lumières, des reflets des paysages dans les flaques l'eau, des ombres... Le contraste des couleurs entre les temples au rouge éclatant et les couleurs plus froides du ciel ombragé ou des paysages aux verts très doux est très fort. J'ai alors voulu retranscrire toute cette palette de couleurs possibles au sein de cette formation.
Pour se marier au timbre du marimba, j'ai utilisé les sonorités boisées (col legno battuto) et percussives (pizzicati, pizz. Bartok) du violon. Le piano, quant à lui, apporte quelques touches impressionnistes de couleurs, de brouillard résonnant avec l'utilisation de la pédale, de nappes liquides, ou encore de cloches. Joués en harmoniques au violon, certains motifs mélodiques aux sonorités modales rappellent la flûte shakuhachi et la musique traditionnelle japonaise. Toujours basée sur le même motif rythmique, l'oeuvre est un véritable moment pulsé et dansant.
Aussi, sur ces estampes de Kawase, il n'y a souvent qu'un personnage - et parfois aucun. Vu de dos et placé au bord de l'image, il semble isolé et cela confère au dessin une certaine mélancolie. C'est cette mélancolie qui m'a inspirée pour le passage plus lyrique du violon - véritable point culminant de l'oeuvre - comme emporté par un déluge avant de s'éteindre et de retrouver les sonorités douces et apaisantes d'une pluie d'été.
L'oeuvre est dédiée aux interprètes qui en feront la création : Adélaïde Ferrière (marimba), Hildegarde Fesneau (violon) et Célia Oneto Bensaïd (piano) en été 2018. / Contemporain / Répertoire / Violon, Marimba et Piano

The Violin Concerto was commissioned by Stiftung Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival. It was first performed by Gidon Kremer (violin) and the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival Orchester conducted by DennisRussell Davies at the Musikhalle Hamburg Germany on 29 August 2003. Interpolated within this one-minute-one-movement layout is a recurrent refrain where the soloist articulates one of the basic harmonic foundations of anumber of the one minute sections (six dominant 7ths - on E F sharp C A B D) in an undisguised Bachian fashion. The slow arpeggios in the later variants of the refrain not unexpectedly find themselves sharing a bed with theopening of Berg's Violin Concerto. Nyman has effectively adopted Berg's orchestral template with two exceptions - the omission of the alto Saxophone and replaced Berg's Percussion section with Marimba and Vibraphone mallet instruments which intertwine with the soloist in the Concerto. Alban Berg's Violin Concerto was dedicated to 'the memory of an angel' Manon Gropius. Nyman's Concerto was dedicated to the memory of DanielToscan du Plantier a friend and neighbour - in Nyman's words 'certainly no angel but a major figure in the recording and film industries'. Arranged for solo Violin and Piano accompaniment the duration of thiswork is approximately: 25 minutes.

1001 Nights in the Harem. Par SAY FAZIL. 'My Violin Concerto consists of four movements whose inspiration is loosely connected with Scheherazade’s One Thousand and One Nights. The first movement is set inside the harem; a variety of women from the harem are introduced, each with her own different personality. The second movement is a frenzy of dance – in effect a party night with an abundance of different types of dance music. The third movement depicts the next morning and consists primarily of variations on a well-known Turkish song. The fourth movement begins dramatically, but develops during the course of the movement more and more into a reminiscence of all the previous events and the work culminates dreamily in a happy mood with sensuous oriental sounds.
As appropriate for an oriental soundscape, the orchestra includes a series of Turkish percussion instruments such as a kudüm or bendir, but also glockenspiel, marimba und vibraphone, celesta and harp. It is however the solo violin which tells the story and also accompanies the listener through the entire work. The violin part is highly virtuoso and unites the four movements into an intensely atmospheric whole in which the solo violin soars off into a solo cadenza between each movement, sometimes accompanied by one of the percussion instruments.
As is customary, the present piano reduction is initially intended as an aid for the study of this work, but during my tour programmes with Patricia Kopatchinskaya and Burhan Öçal we have utilised this material to create a trio version for violin, piano and percussion.' Niccolò Paganini gave the premiere performance of his Second Violin Concerto at La Scala in Milan, 1827. The success of the performance was such that the last movement of the concerto was repeated. The subtitle of this movement is \'La Campanella\' (The little bell) because of the sound the harmonics in this work produce. Paganini known for his pyrotechnics uses double harmonics and left hand pizzicato lavishly in this movement. Moto Perpetuo is one of Paganini\'s most popular works. Dozens of transcriptions exist for a variety of instruments, from marimba to double bass, as well as for orchestra, where all first violins play the solo part.
