Mundy was among the youngest of a group of significant composers whose lives bridged the turbulent times of the Reformation. Though preserved in Elizabethan sources, his Latin antiphons most likely date from the reign of Mary. They are the last examples of a genre cultivated by English composers for two centuries.

John Ireland's 'Cavatina' for violin and piano, which was probably composed in 1904, also exists in a slightly expanded version for organ and shows the composer's mastery of the popular salon style of the time. Unavailable for many years, it is now reissued in a new edition that includes a scholarly note by Geoffrey Bush.

I am grateful for the opportunity to introduce this new collection. The one-word title, Onward! is a call anyone can respond to, at any age. To quote Scottish singer Sir Harry Lauder, we can all 'keep right on to the end of the road'. Most of the hymns were written between 2012 and 2015, some of which are hymn-style versions of biblical psalms or significant portions of a psalm, or in response to a verse of scripture. Some older texts have also been included, paired here for the first time with recently crafted tunes.
This collection also includes a previously unpublished song I co-wrote with my wife, Susan Heafield, a United Methodist pastor and musician. Praise Partners, our joint musical venture, has released two collections: We Can Be Messengers (Ref PP001) and Tell the Good News! (Ref PP003), both distributed by Stainer & Bell.

We Three Kings was written in 1968 for the Herbert Shiner School, Petworth, where Brian Knowles was Head of Music. Adapting the words of a much-loved Victorian carol to a new and unashamedly popular and accessible setting for unison voices and piano, it soon became a seasonal favourite, both there and later at The Royal Naval School (now The Royal School), where Knowles was Composer-in-Residence. Further acclaim followed in 2010, when it was performed live on the Alan Titchmarsh Show, and published by Stainer & Bell (ref. W225). This new arrangement, for SATB choir and piano, may also be performed with a dual-purpose orchestral accompaniment equally suited to the unison version, and available from the Stainer & Bell hire library (ref. HL398). The scoring is for double woodwind, four horns and trumpet, timpani, glockenspiel, xylophone, harp and strings.

Ar Ben y Bryn (On Top of the Hill); Yr Ogof (The Cave); Y Ddraig Goch (The Red Dragon) [PDF Sample] Ar y Mynydd Prydferth Cymreig (On the Beautiful Welsh Mountain) is a colourful, programmatic piece in three short movements, depicting scenes of Welsh mountains, valleys, caves and a hero, armed only with his trusty cornet, who encounters a legendary red dragon. This work was highly commended by the judges in the first Stainer & Bell Award for Brass Composition, held at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff in May 2010.

The third facsimile collection to be published by Early English Church Music, Volume 57 attests to the quality and depth of the polyphonic traditions during the long reigns of Henry III and his son Edward I, when the music of English high culture achieved a technical autonomy from the common international Anglo-French repertoire of the period. Assembling within the covers of one publication a set of facsimiles of the extant remains of native origin, it comprises images of more than sixty sources of thirteenth-century polyphony, including the Reading rota, the conductus-rondellus Flos regalis, and the Worcester fragments, here reunited from three codices. The large page layout adopted enables almost all the manuscripts to be reproduced at full size for direct comparison of different sources, layouts and dimensions.

Complementing their achievements as composers of Italianate vocal music represented elsewhere in the series, this volume brings together consort works by two English Catholics who left England for the continent. Philips belonged to a generation that focused on stylised dance rather than fantasia, and many of his five-part consort dances exist also as keyboard pieces. Dering was born a generation later. Whereas his five-part fantasias were core repertoire for early 17th-century viol players, interest in the stylised dance had by then begun to wane. Several of Dering's pavans and almaines survive in a single source only, and lack outer parts, which have been completed by the editor.

This four-movement suite was first published in 1918 by Joseph Williams (now part of Stainer & Bell) as In Pixieland for Solo Violin or Flute and Piano. In 1921 string parts were added and then in 1930 optional parts for flute, oboe, clarinet in A or B flat and bassoon became available, making the work ideally suited for school or amateur orchestra. In 1999 the Sir George Dyson Trust decided that the original title was slightly out of tune with the times and it was changed to Woodland Suite. In 2007, the piece was recorded by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Richard Hickox and issued on the Chandos label (CHAN 10439) alongside a number of Dyson's choral works. The recording has created new interest in this early suite, which is again available for sale in all versions.

Purcell's setting of the Te Deum and Jubilate in his celebratory D major manner (the first with orchestral accompaniment by an English composer) was admired by his contemporaries and was the inspiration for similar pieces by Blow, Turner, Croft and Handel. This score is the complete choral performing material for soloists and choir, either in performances with organ or, as vocal score, if given with the accompaniment for trumpets and strings which is available for rental.

This matching pair of stirring marches is the latest addition to Stainer & Bell's popular 'Light Organ' series. Joe Marsh writes with a particular flair for rhythmic heft and swing, and his work shows the great British tradition of martial music for the instrument alive and thriving in the hands of one of its most noted practitioners, who is also President of the Sunderland Theatre Organ Preservation Society.

This volume forms a pair with EC59. The Priest's Book includes all the texts, tones, chants and ritual directions for the priest at Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Use of Salisbury throughout the year. Based on the edition of the Sarum Missal issued by Prevost in 1528, it is a practical resource (the size of an altar book), as well as an edition for study and teaching. There are ritual instructions for the deacon, subdeacon and four servers, and written-out examples of intoned Epistles and Gospels. All Latin texts have English translations. The Ordinal sets out no fewer than twenty different orders for daily and weekly Lady Mass, and the Directory indicates when each is to be used.

The words of Peaceful was the Night are taken from John Milton's ode On the Morning of Christ's Nativity, written in 1629. Milton describes the universe halting in utter stillness at the moment of Christ's appearing on the earth. (As the poet wrote: 'His reign of peace upon the Earth began.') In James McCarthy's carol, the voices play a dual role, as narrator, and by evoking the atmosphere of a singular moment of frozen time. Although commissioned by Sonoro for performance during the Christmas period, this singable, lyrical setting would fit well into a programme of music suitable for any time of the year.

The outcome of a fruitful collaboration of theologians, writers and musicians working at the retreat and therapeutic centre of Holy Rood House in Yorkshire, this new collection articulates the needs of a contemporary ministry of healing through the agency of hymns, the church's most resonant and expressive form of worship. Acknowledging the impact of medical science in vastly expanding the range of the possible in every aspect of our living and dying, eighty-three texts tackle a rich diversity of themes: infant death, illness and suffering, ageing and dementia, the genome, mortality and bereavement, grief and lament, pain and despair - including pain and despair from the failure of healing - but also wisdom and resilience, healing as part of a spiritual holism of mind and body, and as a metaphor for social and political justice and care for the environment. The wealth of music includes new tunes and familiar ones, and the anthology concludes with a section of twelve short or repetitive texts to be used in conjunction with prayer. Hymns of Hope and Healing is the product of many voices, from those of widely experienced authors to others taking their promising early steps in the form. It will provide a vehicle for worship and reflection for those involved in chaplaincy, in therapies and counselling, and all in the wider church with an interest in this ancient ministry. Witnessed through the life, death and resurrection of Christ, it is refreshed and re-imagined here for a time both of breathtaking scientific advance, and of an urgent need to affirm our wholeness and faith while embracing the momentous challenges to our traditional understanding of health and healing.

Music for three violins and bass formed a small yet distinctive corpus of instrumental music at the Restoration court of Charles II and in the Catholic chapel of James II. Introduced to England by the German violinist Thomas Baltzar, the genre was adopted by John Jenkins, whose ten late fantasia-suites for three violins, bass viol and continuo, together with Gottfried Finger's five sonatas for the same group of instruments, constitute the bulk of this volume. Other representative works include Baltzar's own Suite in C major and Bartholomew Isaack's Ground in A minor, all fascinating progenitors of Purcell's crowning contributions to the repertoire, his Pavan in G minor and 'Three Parts upon a Ground'.

This uplifting prayer for peace is an anthem setting of Thomas Cranmer's Collect for the Second Sunday after Epiphany. And perhaps in the spirit of the day's epistle - an exhortation from Romans 12 to practise those gifts received through grace - the composer offers here a beautiful account of his choral idiom: a matter of precisely imagined textures, as sensitive to individual line and contour as to the seamless dovetailing of motifs and harmony, and of majestic, purposefully cadenced phrases in affective unity with the sense and breathing of the text. Written for the 2011 Liturgical Music Course and premiered in Winchester Cathedral, Almighty and Everlasting God is well within the standard of capable church choirs, and offers an absorbing and memorable enhancement of reverence in worship for a variety of occasions.
