Ireland's organ music belongs largely to the early years of his composing career (1902-1911). The 'Meditation' on John Keble's Rogationtide Hymn however was written in 1958 and was his very last composition. Edited by Robert Gower.

Gustav Holst (1874-1934) is widely regarded as one of the most original of 20th century composers and The Planets composed in 1914-16 established him as a really popular composer. The work with its vivid sense of invention and use of driving rhythm is a masterpiece of the 20th century orchestral repertoire. Arthur Wills has transcribed these three movements from The Planets for organ to make a superb set of recital pieces or voluntaries.

Daniel Roth's Triptyque (hommage à Pierre Cochereau) for Organ. Daniel Roth was born in 1942 in Mulhouse in France. He studied music at the Paris Conservatoire where he won first prizes in harmony counterpoint fugue accompaniment Organ and improvisation going on to win prizes in international competitions including the SACEM prize for Organ composition and the first Grand Prix de Chartres for interpretation and improvisation. His performing career has been international with recitals conferences performances for radio and a large number of records. At the same time he teaches Organ improvisation and interpretationat the Musikhochschule in Frankfurt/Main Germany. He also composes and his works are published and played the whole world over. Daniel Roth is organist at the church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris.

Par AUVINEN ANTTI. Antti Auvinen (b. 1974) composed Singel Excelsis in 2012 using material from an earlier work for three organs. He finds fascinating the rhythmic characteristics of the organ: 'Many of the vibrations and rhythmic fluctuations derived from the overtone series are extremely interesting. Also the natural virtuosity of the instrument is utterly fascinating. In fast passages the rhythmic accuracy needs very quick attack. A slower attack on the other hand makes it possible to turn the attention to gestures and figures, while details get more blurred. Different ?attack features? of the organ stops allow shaping of very diverse rhythmic figures in time and space.' Poul Ruders' Trio Transcendentale for Organ was commissioned by The 12th Carl Nielsen International Organ Competition Odense in 2011.A review in the May-July 2016 issue of 'The Organ' magazine states that this piece 'has the character to make a notable impression in recital programming.'

3 Organ Chorales - In Memoriam Kjartan Hoydal was composed by Sunleif Rasmussen in 2016 based on melodies by Jógvan Waagstein. 'This is the only published work for solo organ by Rasmussen though an earlier piece (A Light is Lit 1993) is scored for organ with electronics. As with all his music the titles of these three ‘chorales’ (perhaps better described as fantasias) – Breaking Waves Flying Storm and Summer Morning – suggest a strong connection with the landscape of his native Faeroe Islands. Spectral harmonies combine with rushing manualfigurations to create exciting virtuosic music that is satisfyingly characterful'.  

Jehan Alain (1911-1940) was a French organist and composer. His Litanies for Organ was composed in 1937 and is a sublime addition to the instrument's repertoire. Alain studied with Organ virtuosos Guilmant and Vierne and was primarily an organist and composer of religious music. Whilst at the Paris Conservatoire he won many prizes and his composition catalogue comprises some 140 works. Alain's Litanies is his most famous work and is prefaced with the text; 'When in its distress the Christian soul can find no more words to invoke God's mercy it repeats endlessly the same litany....for reason hasreached its limit; only faith can take one further...' From lively and comical pieces to sensitive and unexpected works Alain's pieces are diverse in musicality. Moreover the composer exploits Organ techniques making Litanies an exciting and varied piece for advanced level organists.

Judith Weir's The Tree Of Peace was composed in 2016 for Organ. Commissioned in loving memory of Richard Axtell (1952-2015) talented and much-loved organist at the Parish of St. Andrew West Tarring. 'It'senormously inspiring to see the Master of the Queen's Music turning her attention to the organ once again. Judith Weir's The Tree Of Peace is a short piece commissioned in memory of the organist Richard Axtell... Despite thesimplicity of the music it carries all the hallmarks of Weir's unmistakeably refined idiom.' - Stephen Farr Choir and Organ Jan 2018 From the Master of the Queen's Music Judith Weir comes The Tree ofPeace which was commissioned in memory of Richard Axtell organist of the parish church in West Tarring West Sussex. It was given its first performance there by Charles Harrison on the 17 June 2017. It lasts some 4 minutes andproves to be a thoroughly engaging piece in her customary refined idiom. It is in three main sections with a graded increase of tempo throughout. Thematic material is presented at the start cantabile. The central sectionprovides an energetic development marked animato leading to the conclusion molto mosso which gives the theme as in the opening but in augmentation. Throughout I feel an orchestral sense of colour and interrelationships inthe music - and have found it delightful to play. A modest two manual and pedal instrument with some contrasted quiet colours available will suffice and the technical demands are by no means severe. A delightful addition to therepertoire of short self-contained delightful pieces. - Organists' Review Duration: Approx 4 minutes.

In 1959 Howells wrote the Fancy and Toccata for a Chamber Organ in St Mary's Episcopal Church in Aberdeen after the main organ was bombed during the Second World War.

Britten For Organ is a superb collection of four pieces by composer Benjamin Britten for solo Organ as edited by Colin Matthews and Timothy Bond.

The Last Judgment is a through-composed symphonic tableau that follows the structure of the text of Matthew underlining it in a figuralistic manner. Other scriptural references are also to be found: an image of the sun that turns dark (Acts of the Apostles 2: 20) and before the gathering of the nations twelve chords representing the thrones for the judgment of the twelve tribes of Israel (Matthew 19: 28). The thematic material combines original figures with Gregorian chant: the Gloria from the Missa de Angelis; the Alleluia of the Epiphany; Dies irae the sequence from the Requiem Mass; In paradisum theburial antiphon. The sections in recitative style follow the declamatory rhythm of the corresponding verses in Arabic the composer’s mother tongue. Finally the registration requires a symphonic style organ such as the Goll organ in Memmingen Germany at which the composer prepared the orchestral expression of this work.

Fast Cycles for Organ is a piece composed by Nico Muhly which appears on organist James McVinnie's album 'Cycles'. The song was commissioned by McVinnie and dates from 2009. A difficult piece it showcases both the talents of Muhly as composer and the organist who plays it. Fast Cycles draws from Muhly's cyclical composition style and has been called an 'obsessively driven toccata'. As the piece drives on the hypnotic qualities of the upper notes of the Organ contrast with the stark and foreboding pedal tones. The dynamics of the piece result in passages of soft beauty andexplosive ferocity climaxing in a closing salvo that is to be played 'as fast as possible'. An exciting piece Fast Cycles will no doubt show off the virtuosity of the organist who performs it.
